Call it the new Digital India. The Indian government, with the help of internet service providers, and presumably under directives of court, has banned thousands of websites and URLs in the last five odd years. But until now if you somehow visited these “blocked URLs” all was fine. However, now if you try to visit such URLs and view the information, you may get three-year jail sentence as well as invite a fine of Rs 3 lakh.

This is just for viewing a torrent file, or downloading a file from a host that may have been banned in India, or even for viewing an image on a file host like Imagebam. You don’t have to download a torrent file, and then the actual videos or other files, which might have copyright. Just accessing information under a blocked URL will land you in jail and leave your bank account poorer by Rs 3 lakh.

If you visit such a URL, you will be shown the following warning.
“This URL has been blocked under the instructions of the Competent Government Authority or in compliance with the orders of a Court of competent jurisdiction. Viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy of the contents under this URL is punishable as an offence under the laws of India, including but not limited to under Sections 63, 63-A, 65 and 65-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 which prescribe imprisonment for 3 years and also fine of upto Rs. 3,00,000/-. Any person aggrieved by any such blocking of this URL may contact at [email protected]..om who will, within 48 hours, provide you the details of relevant proceedings under which you can approach the relevant High Court or Authority for redressal of your grievance”

This is a change compared to the earlier message that users would encounter on the blocked URLs in India. The earlier message would read that the URL has been blocked at the direction of DoT. Of late, however, the government bodies were not only experimenting in how to implement the blocks but were also trying to figure what message to show to users. Recently, the blocked URLs also gave out not reachable error without specifying any message.

Don’t worry it’s just a notice to follow the court orders. No one would be bothered about it to prosecute as the govt as no incentives from stopping people from downloading pirated softwares and such. All these MNCs price their product high inline with the highest per capita income of the west and don’t even consider developing countries like ours in their pricing. Also the bulk of revenues goes to those countries and why would India want to spend already limited resources (police, judiciary, exchequer etc are already burdened). By putting such a notice it would only give them a right to prosecute in case they need to (people leaking all those movies before it is even released and such). Maybe they might try and protect the Indian film industry only as they do help in some taxation. Obviously they won’t even bother to prosecute cases forwarded by west (everyday many such cases involving piracy, call scam etc are being referred by FBI to Indian police who give a damn about it)

Also when they have already blocked those websites (remember the notice that the site has been blocked by DoT notification will only be changed to new wordings) it simply means that the user can’t go behind that. If the user is still able to access them only means that they are using a VPN which obviously won’t be tracked by them. An “on the paper” notice to denounce their responsibility in front of judiciary. smile

Why do you think your theft is justified?

When most people think of the movie industry you think of the stars, the hot actors and the parties. But what about the men behind the camera? The technicians, the assisstants? You know why they are suffering? Because of piracy. Because of you. They are losing jobs and starving. Because of you.

Yeah I get it. You want shit for free. And you will have it because you are freaking priviledged. If poor people want free internet fuck them because net neutrality and all those moralisitc things but you, you deserve to fucking torrent the shit out a product that so many people made after months and years of hard work. Right?

Why randia? Why are you a hypocrite and why do you think your stealing is justified?

Edit: Data for those who are asking

As for numbers, how about these :

In the decade since peer-to-peer (p2p) file-sharing site Napster emerged in 1999, music sales in the U.S. have dropped 47 percent, from $14.6 billion to $7.7 billion. From 2004 through 2009 alone, approximately 30 billion songs were illegally downloaded on file-sharing networks. NPD reports that only 37 percent of music acquired by U.S. consumers in 2009 was paid for. Frontier Economics recently estimated that U.S. Internet users annually consume between $7 and $20 billion worth of digitally pirated recorded music. According to the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, the digital theft of music, movies and copyrighted content takes up huge amounts of Internet bandwidth – 24 percent globally, and 17.5 percent in the U.S. Digital storage locker downloads constitute 7 percent of all Internet traffic, while 91 percent of the links found on them were for copyrighted material, and 10 percent of those links were to music specifically, according to a 2011 Envisional study.

As for India One credible analysis by the Institute for Policy Innovation concludes that global music piracy causes $12.5 billion of economic losses every year, 71,060 U.S. jobs lost, a loss of $2.7 billion in workers’ earnings, and a loss of $422 million in tax revenues, $291 million in personal income tax and $131 million in lost corporate income and production taxes. For copies of the report, please visit www.i...rg.

As for India the direct effect is a loss of Rs. 16000 Crores and 800000 jobs.

Youtube. I have binged on Graham Norton show purely on YT. I think Rjio will be including more channels in the coming months(since they plan on providing fullon DTH via IP) which would include channels like Comedy Central. Atleast I don’t have to stream football matches illegally now, thanks to JioPlay. But strangely yesterday when I clicked on Star Sports Select to watch EPL it always took me to Hotstar app who were asking for premium sub for watching the matches. I have mailed them, hopefully it will be rectified before next match.

Of course yes and I am a strong believer of that. I am really not against torrents but that doesn’t make us torrents users criminals as some hypocrites suggest (of course law might say otherwise but we have our own weakness). Would be easier even for me to go around bashing people on internet who use torrents just because no one knows I do it secretly too wink
