Best way to utilize your american express card reward points

Statement credit is best at 18000/24000 points for gold card.

What does this mean? This cant be used to pay the card due? What is the credit used for then?

Will be adjusted in next statement, not the current one that has already been generated before you request for redemption.

Forgot to mention that other banks also have similar terms and conditions for adjusting points against statement credit against card outstanding.
