Management Thought – Five Temptations of a CEO – Three

Resisting the temptation to protect their status and to be popular with their direct reports sometimes fail. Because even if they are willing to hold their direct reports responsible, they are often reluctant to do so because they don’t think it’s fair. That’s because they haven’t made it clear what those direct reports are accountable for doing. Because they give in to yet another temptation: the need to make “correct” decisions, to achieve certainty.

Many CEOs, especially highly analytical ones, want to ensure that their decisions are correct, which is impossible in a world of imperfect information and uncertainty. Still, executives with a need for precision and correctness often postpone decisions and fail to make their people’s deliverables clear. They provide vague and hesitant direction to their direct reports and they hope they figure out the right answers along the way. The chances that they will produce the results the CEOs eventually decide they want are slim.

Advice to CEOS: Make clarity more important than accuracy. Remember that your people will learn more if you take decisive action rather than wait for more information. And if decisions you make in the spirit of creating clarity turn out to be wrong when more information becomes available, change plans and explain why. The only real cost to you of being wrong is loss of pride. The cost to your company of not taking the risk of being wrong is paralysis.

_*What is Adherence?

Lee Colan

*_

In business and in life, the game is usually won by those who can consistently execute a well-thought-out strategy. In other words, winners stick with it – they practice adherence.

Adherence is the ability to consistently execute. Not coincidentally, the word “adherence” appears to have originated in the 1500s from the French word “adherer,” which means “to stick to.” Adherence is the critical link between strategy (knowing) and results (doing). Therefore, it is the solution to the knowing-doing gap. Winning requires adherence because successful execution of your plan is not a one-time event but rather steady progress over an extended period of time.

No discussion about the concept of adherence would be complete without mentioning one man who likely knew more about adherence in his day than any other: George de Mestral. George was a Swiss engineer and part-time inventor. A simple incident in 1948 changed the course of his life and led to a common product that is still used all over the world.

While he was out hunting with his dog one day, George found that his pants and his dog’s fur were covered with burdock burrs. He had such difficulty removing the burrs that he became intrigued with the little seed’s pods. Later when he was back home, he examined one under a microscope. George noticed that it was covered with hundreds of tiny “hooks” that allowed it to grab hold of strands of clothing or fur. Inspired by nature’s ingenuity, he conceived the idea for a similar fastener based on the burr’s design.

He called his invention Velcro, from the French words velours and crochet (meaning “velvet” and “hook”). Today, Velcro is a household name. It is found in everything from sneakers and wallets to blood-pressure cuffs and toys. It was used on the space shuttle and helped hold a human heart together during the first artificial heart surgery. It was even used as a piece of comedic genius in 1984 when late night talk show host David Letterman launched himself from a trampoline onto a Velcro wall while wearing a Velcro suit. He stuck!

It took George de Mestral 12 years from the day he first encountered those sticky burrs to the time he brought his locking tape idea to market and even longer for it to become a success.

*Execution
*

The chronic underperformers have lots of company. Countless others are less than they could be because of poor execution. The gap between promises and results is widespread and clear. The gap nobody knows is the gap between what a company’s leaders want to achieve and the ability of their organization to achieve it.

Everybody talks about change. In recent years, a small industry of change-masters has preached revolution, reinvention, quantum change, breakthrough thinking, audacious goals, learning organizations, and the like. We’re not necessarily debunking this stuff. But unless you translate big thoughts into concrete steps for action, they’re pointless. Without execution, the breakthrough thinking breaks down, learning adds no value; people don’t meet their stretch goals and the revolution stops dead in its tracks. What you get is change ifor the worse…

These days we’re hearing a more practical phrase on the lips of business leaders. They’re talking about taking their organizations to the “next level”, which brings the rhetoric down to earth. GE CEO Jeff Immelt, for example, is asking his people how they can use technology to differentiate their way to the next level and command better prices, margins, and revenue growth.

This is an execution approach to change… If you don’t know how to execute, the whole of your effort as a leader will always be less than the sum of its parts.

chankya’s Thoughts – quite ever popular

Chanakya (c. 350-283 BCE) was an adviser and a prime minister to the first Maurya Emperor Chandragupta (c. 340-293 BCE),

He believed in four ways :Saam(Treating with Equallity), Daam (Enticement), Dand(Punishment) or Bhed (Sowing Dissension),

1) “Learn from the mistakes of others… you can’t live long enough to make them all yourselves!!”

.
3) “Even if a snake is not poisonous, it should pretend to be venomous.”

4) “There is some self-interest behind every friendship. There is no friendship without self-interests. This is a bitter truth.”

5) " Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions – Why am I doing it, What the results might be and
Will I be successful. Only when you think deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, go ahead."
6) “As soon as the fear approaches near, attack and destroy it.”

them like a friend. Your grown up children are your best friends.”

15) “Education is the Best Friend. An Educated Person is Respected Everywhere. Education beats the Beauty and the Youth.”

How happy is your organization?

It’s a known fact that the efficiency of any organization is concretely
linked with the work satisfaction index of the employees. You can hire good
people by tough hiring criteria, you can ensure their attendance by
installing time-in and time-out devices; you can ensure their availability
on their desk by close monitoring through IP cameras etc however you cannot
guarantee or enhance their creativity index, their efficiency and their
loyalty factor by all these policing techniques. In now a days of
competitive business environment entrepreneurs want their teams to be the
most effective ones and even they want them to move from effectiveness to
greatness (as Stephen Covey tells in his book ‘The 8th Habit’) but they
merely take the real effective actions in order to acheive the same. ****

In order to have highly collaborative and creative teams there should be an
environment where teams should love what they are doing. Every morning if
an employee while coming to office is enthusiastic and charged about the
day, then he will make things happen. However if he is coming to office
with sad heart or negative
attitude then you have already half lost the project. So the point is that a culture
of friendliness and trust

needs to be ensured. Encouragement and consistent gratitude needs to be in
place since it acts as a fuel and empowers the acceleration of the teams
and the project tasks. Below are some of the points you must consider for
the sake of monitoring the happiness and satisfaction index of your
organization:****

Employees are like batteries. 5 Techniques to recharge them

https://i.imgur.com/Nsj6J3z.jpg

I have realized that I can relate any employee with a re-chargeable battery. To elaborate it more, lets consider the analogy of smart phones. In most of the smart phones the battery consumption is displayed on the top right corner of mobile screen. When the consumption percentage falls below 25%, the color of battery icon turns orange and when it is less than 10% the color goes alarmingly red. So it is responsibility of the owner to ensure timely charging to keep it functional. Just like that, it is responsibility of each manager to closely observe the discharge level of each member of his/her team and take appropriate measures to ensure high efficiency of the employee consequently getting maximum throughput. The good news is that when employees are charged more and more, they produce the results in the same high proportion!

So below are some techniques which can be considered to boost the charge level:

1- Trainings:

Needless to emphasize the importance of training, this is one of the critically important aspect of professional growth and ultimately for the business enhancement. It’s a genuine Win-Win approach. I highly recommend studying the concept of “Sharpen The Saw” from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly effective people ®. The trainings can either be online, or in-house or at international level. Further, podcasts can also be considered.

2- Professional Membership:

Encourage employee to join professional groups. Even if the company has to pay some amount for the membership, it should be done. Employee will get satisfaction for being the member and will learn new ideas and trends in the industry which will eventually help business growth.

3- Get together:

If possible, Employee’s families to be invited as well. This will give extra boost to employee’s satisfaction index. Outdoor activities including Lunch, games and fun activities can be considered.

4- Financial benefits:

This is the most attractive part from employee’s perspective. This can either be on annual or project basis. Specific targets can be set in terms of sale (or any applicable Key Performance Indicator). High KPI should result in high bonus. This will ensure employee go extra mile to achieve high and high. Also Employee of the month is another technique which should be used. A certificate along with optimal amount of cash will feed extra energy.

5- Knowledge based sessions:

Technical and motivational lectures/events should be arranged on weekly or monthly basis. You may find a gem within your team who loves to speak on a specific subject. Find such people and give them the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills with other colleagues.

Outstanding African Entrepreneurs: Vimal Shah

http://www.ventures-africa.com/2012/08/outstand…

VENTURES AFRICA – Bidco’s CEO, Vimal Shah is one of Kenya’s most successful entrepreneurs. Shah has built one of the regions biggest manufacturer of edible oils and fats taking multinationals like Unilever head on, in East and Central Africa.

His company, Bidco Oil Refineries, manufacturers edible oil brands like Elianto and Golden Fry, cooking fats including Kimbo, laundry soaps, margarine, baking powder, and hygiene products. The firms oil refinery in Thika town, outside Nairobi produces 1,000 tonnes of cooking oil daily.

The Bidco Group under the leadership of Shah has established itself as a leading manufacturer, marketer and distributor of edible oils, fats and hygienic products in East Africa.

Shah’s father, Bhimji Depar, started the company in 1970 as a small clothing manufacturing unit. Shah is however credited for transforming Bidco from a small unknown company to one that can today hold its own in the face of foreign multinationals. Bidco after all, distributes its products to over 16 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa.

And Shah still has ambitions.

“We want to become the market leader across Africa in all our products and brands. We are now making a strong foray into new African markets in the south, west and north,” said Shah in a 2011 interview with The Economic Times.

The Harvard Business School conducted a case study on Bidco Group hoping to create a success model for other enterprises to follow.

“We believe in the full value chain model. From the soil and agriculture right up to processing and distribution, we are involved in all the stages of our products. Besides edible oil, this works for other products such as coffee and flowers as well,” said Shah.

Shah has just been awarded East African entrepreneur of the year award in the annual All African Business Leaders Awards (AABLA) organised by ABN Productions in partnership with CNBC Africa. He is therefore automatically a finalist in the AABLA grand finale which will be in Johannesburg later in the year.

Shah was recognised for having had “ a steering role at Bidco since its inception, playing a formative role in strategic planning and management of the company.”

This is not Shah’s first recognition. He has received numerous awards in the past including President Mwai Kibaki’s ‘First Class: Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS)’ for exceptional effort and contribution to national development.

He was also a finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011, a position he held together with his brother and business partner, Tarun Shah.

Shah is also one of Kenya’s leading businessmen of Asian origin and maintains strong links with India. He was born and brought up in Nyeri in Central Kenya and later in capital city, Nairobi.

“I may be a second-generation Kenyan, but probably we are far more connected to our roots than many Indians in Delhi and Mumbai. The Indian community here (Kenya) is a vibrant mix of old business families, new entrepreneurs and professionals coming to work here as expats. The community believes very strongly in preserving our Indian culture and we organise vibrant celebrations of festivals such as Diwali,” Shah told The Economic Times.

Shah is the immediate chairman of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) where he lobbied for a favourable environment for manufactures and other business stakeholders.

Indian Schoolgirl, 12, has higher IQ than Einstein
A 12-year-old girl has stunned her parents after she was revealed as having an IQ higher than Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

https://i.imgur.com/Ilz0D9f.jpg

Neha Ramu achieved a score of 162 on a Mensa IQ test – the highest score possible.

Despite her young age, the score puts her in the top one per cent of brightest people in the country and means she is more intelligent than Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Albert Einstein, who are all thought to have an IQ of 160.

Neha’s doctor parents, who lived in India before moving to Britain when their daughter was seven, had no idea their daughter was so gifted.

Although she had always performed well at school, it was only when she took an entrance exam for Tiffin Girls’, a high-achieving grammar school, and achieved a perfect score of 280/280 that they realised her capabilities.

Two years later, she took the test for Mensa, a society for people with high IQs, and achieved the maximum possible score for someone aged under 18.

Neha’s mother Jayashree said: "At first I didn’t really realise what she was capable of as she wasn’t being stretched at school and when she joined primary school in the UK in year three we didn’t really understand the system here.
“But then when she got the result of the entrance exam for Tiffin Girls’, I thought ‘OK, maybe she does have something special in her and I’m just not realising it.

“We found out she’d got in yesterday evening when my husband and I were both at work. Neha came home before us and opened the letter because it was addressed to her. She was shouting down the phone: ‘I got in, I got in’.

“I am so proud of her. Although she’s being doing well at these kind of tests for sometime now this is just marvellous. I can’t express the feeling.”

Whilst most children spend their summer holidays playing in the park or on their computer, Neha, who is in year eight at Tiffin Girls’ School in Kingston- upon- Thames, asked her parents last summer whether she could go to a three-week academic summer camp in America to learn about the brain and the body’s nervous system.

Neha, who left her home in Surbiton and went to the camp alone, studied for seven hours a day, five days a week dissecting body parts such as the brain and eyes.

Both her mother and her father Muniraju are eye specialists and Neha already has plans to follow in their footsteps into a career in medicine. Before that, Neha has already set her sights on a place at Harvard after taking her SATs- the American equivalent of A-levels- and achieving a score of 740 out of 800 in a test designed for 18-year-olds.

The score would be sufficient to get her into any Ivy League university.

Despite her success Neha, a devoted Harry Potter fan and keen swimmer, said she found the Mensa test “quite hard” and did not expect to get in.

She said: "I’m really, really happy because I found the test quite hard and I wasn’t really holding out much hope that I’d be a member of Mensa.

“We might have a little party or something sometime soon to celebrate. I haven’t told my friends yet but I’ve told some of my family and they are all very happy for me.”

Einstein never took an IQ test as none of the modern intelligence tests existed when he was alive, but experts believe he had an IQ of around 160.

The IQ test is designed to test a range of abilities to determine the intelligence level of the student. In the UK the average person achieves a score of 100.

A spokesman for British Mensa said: “Neha scored 162 on the Cattell IIIB test, putting her within the top one per cent of people in the country.”

A village with 60 millionaires!

Once impoverished and drought-prone, Hiware Bazar in Maharashtra is a shining example of how a visionary leader can use good governance to make degraded areas resource-rich and transform the future of its people through empowerment and inspiration.

Raosaheb Pawar, 85, a former wrestler, cycles to the village square at Hiware Bazar in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra to sit under shady trees and chat with others, most of them as old as him. Life is good for all of them as they have become prosperous, and often the conversation is about their village that was such an unlivable place 25 years ago. Raosaheb thought that most of the villagers would die of poverty and hunger. Today, a deep sense of joy and gratitude swells within him as he talks about how just one young sarpanch came into their lives and transformed their future. He proudly says he owns 45 acres of lush fertile land, one tractor, one harvesting machine and three motorcycles. His annual turnover: Over Rs. 15 lakh. He is not the only one. There are 60 millionaires in the village today who are all farmers!

Written by a 90 year old- Great Advice

This is something we should all read at least once a week!!!!! Make sure you read to the end!!!!!!

Written by Regina Brett, 90 years old, of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio .

“To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I’ve ever written.

My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short enjoy it.

4. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don’t have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.

7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.

8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.

12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye, but don’t worry, God never blinks.

16.. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.

18. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.

19.. It’s never too late to be happy. But its all up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’

27. Always choose life.

28. Forgive

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.

35. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative of dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have, not what you need

42. The best is yet to come…

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift."

Its estimated 93% won’t forward this. If you are one of the 7% who will, forward this with the title ‘7%’.
