Hey dimers,
I am using a 6-7 year old pc and it has become quite slow now.
I am planning to purchase an intenal hdd or sdd for my PC but I have a little idea about these things. Can anyone suggest me which one to buy?
Also I can post details of my motherboard & pc details as well as HDD or SDD link. Can anyone check if both are compatible or not.
TIA

@bullet Since your motivation to upgrade the HDD is to get better speeds, you should definitely get an SSD for your primary (boot) partition. For data storage needs, you can buy a regular HDD. Or you can save some money by purchasing a single SSHD (i.e. hybrid of HDD and SSD).
Since your PC is 6-7 years old, it would be safe to assume that it supports SATA-II. But you should verify this. To save money, you can buy a barely-used SSD from eBay. See: http://www.desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/t...

@bullet why are you buying harddisk ? for slowness issue…
my C drive partition is of 40 GB with roughly 2-3 GB of free space.

Don’t buy internal. Without second thought go and buy external “WD My Passport Ultra” 1 TB. Price would be around 3800 – 4000.

Motherboard – Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. G31M-S2L
Yes it supports SATA II only.
After I buy a compatible SDD ( I am thinking that 120gb would be enough for windows and software’s ) and install it, I will have to transfer Windows from old HDD to new SDD, I don’t know how?
And I can keep my old HDD for keeping data ( movies, photos, etc ), right?

I already have MyPassport 500 GB HDD.
Better buy a complete new CPU.. to get the best speed.. atleast i3 with any 500 or 1TB hard disk.
And min 4GB RAM.

You won’t have to “transfer” Windows, but rather you would have to reinstall Windows on the new SSD (not SDD). I am assuming you have the original Windows installation CD. And, yes, 120GB would be good enough for the boot partition.
Here are two used SSD suggestions (available on eBay.in):
(1) 128GB; Rs. 1900; http://www.ebay.in/itm/Samsung-128GB-SSD-2-5-3G...
(2) 256GB; Rs. 3749; http://www.ebay.in/itm/SAMSUNG-SSD-830-Series-M...
You can of course use the old HDD for storing data. If you have only a single partition on the HDD (i.e. C-drive), you can just delete the Windows specific folders (Windows, Program Files, etc.) and keep the drive plugged in as it is. You would just have to change the boot priority in the BIOS settings to give first preference to the SSD after you install it. On the other hand, if your existing HDD has two or more partitions (C-drive, D-drive, etc.), you can move your data files from the My Documents and Desktop folders in C-drive to another partition and then delete the C-drive partition to merge (re-allocate) the free space with other partitions.
Based on your basic understanding of computers, I have tried to use very simple language but let me know if something is still unclear. All the best!
Thanks again!"@DealSeeker":http://www.desidime.com/users/209542 wrote:

I’ll buy it in a couple of days.
I think I’ll need a little help in BIOS work. ( I’ll leave u a msg once I get hold of it ).
In the mean time I’ll try to understand about BIOS and Windows installation through Google.
And no, I don’t have an original Windows CD ( I am using a Pirated Copy). I can’t afford an original one right now.
I have never actually installed original windows in this PC ( It came pre installed with Linux )

i will also recommend u to get a new CPU else if u r tight in budget like me get an old lappy from OLX .

Its fine.. almost everybody uses pirated version of windows at home.
Not everyone
Anyway what gen mobo do you have, if it’s pre core2 era it may not support TRIM

I didn’t say everyone.
My desktop mobo is based on G33 chipset with C2D processor which I assembled in 2006 or 2007 I guess.

Should be fine with SSD, TRIM & all, for your system however the OP’s config is still unknown
I had already posted my motherboard details in above comments…."@$hubham":http://www.desidime.com/users/249181 wrote:

Motherboard – Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. G31M-S2L
Intel core 2 duo processor
2gb ( 1Gb * 2 slots) of DDR2 RAM
320gb internal HDD
It supports SATA 2 and has four SATA 2 ports.
Let me know if u need any other config details

Pretty similar ones, both of them, however you better get 2GB more RAM otherwise the pagefile will wear down the SSD pretty fast. I’d say ~4K for 2GB DDR2 plus (at least) 240GB SSD, you could get 256GB one as well if you have a good discount coupon & correspondingly decent listing on ebay.
Thanks for ur reply!"@$hubham":http://www.desidime.com/users/249181 wrote:

4 GB RAM would cost me extra 2k approx.
and why did u say at least 240gb ssd,
would 120 be not enough for boot drive?
What if I can upgrade only one thing as now, either SSD or RAM, which one would be more beneficial?
