Google Is Working On An Operating System For The 'Internet Of Things'

The project, codenamed “Brillo,” would create software specifically to power and connect this new class of device. Since most of the electronic components use relatively low-power embedded hardware, the key strategy is to make it work with as little as 32MB of memory. (Those of you who are old enough to remember PCs in the early 90s can laugh now.) Though the source claims that Brillo would be launched as part of the widening Android brand (which already covers wearables and, just lately, automotive tech), it’s not clear if the software will actually be based on Android. Presumably Brillo-powered gadgets would integrate with Google’s existing products on the web, mobile, and devices like the Nest thermostat.

The Information claims that Google will publicly reveal Brillo at Google I/O next week, and that seems like a pretty solid bet. We’ll keep an eye out for it.

read it earlier two weeks back http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-ne...

so after @TronGalaxy ’s post now also found they are trying for vertical integration http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-ne... to match others.

funny it would be, the future! We are running out of IP addresses for one
and
if so many device each talk to each other, we would eventually forget doing most things https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

It’ll only get better..

Smartomation is everything!

If only India had real internet.. We’d be 50 years ahead of where we are today!

running out of IP’s ??? IPv6 is humongous !!!! What more ip’s do we need !
Internet of things stack would anyways have IPv6 implementation !

Partly agree, partly disagree.

If then analysis are always hypothetical. (‘if’ i had aced exams, ‘then’ today i’d be.. OR ‘if’ India hadn’t been split ‘then’)

having looked at what a Singapore or a Korea or a Dubai/Qatar or a Germany/JAPAN did to self, I have come to believe that foresight, WILL and ‘must do’ go getter attitude is whats more important.

Somehow we have always lacked that and will continue to.

India: our attitude remains >I won’t do something I feel is TronGalaxy’s ‘job’. I dont want to ‘serve’ anywhere unless ‘I’ get the credit. If a Ralph is rising, I suddenly am uncomfortable, even depressed as to why He is moving up or at ease in life when I am not.

More than internet, people have to change. Am sure Korea didn’t have 200 years nor the resources much larger than ours., yet they got ahead in some things within 50-60 years. Singapore and Dubai were fishing ‘villages’ the same time as us getting a new life. The planners planned for next 50 years, not next 5 years.

As for IoT, the old school guys sure will feel funny. I mean, never having to call an AC repair guy or buy provisions after checking the meticulous list. Getting a surgery performed from a surgeon 3000 miles apart. Humans! What will we do with the spare time https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

IPv6 i think can even support if humans colonise the moon or other planets. Its THAT scalable. My goofup.

Does anyone know though whether any standards have been formed and adopted with IoT? Because Apple Google type companies always try to establish their own way.

It reminds one of the clutter of formats and standards the world kept getting split over. (be it NTSC PAL or VHS versus others or Blu ray getting accepted over Toshiba or Hitachi’s tech)

any association or site to follow the developments?

@chopchop incidentally i have worked on Internet of things for 2 years (Last year at College + Samsung 1 year !)

Few interesting Oses in IOT space :-
Contiki (Open Source ) , Bitcloud Atmel Zigbee Stack (which i worked on https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif ) , FreeRTOS , TinyOS !

NXP Semiconductors , Atmel are way ahead in their developements for Multi threaded RTOS which can be used in low memory devices !

Contiki :-

BitCloud ZigBee Pro :-

RIOT :-

IOT Space :-

There are lot of forums for the same ! Lemme know if you need more info !

Oyi ! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif thanks.
this ought to be more than sufficient for my slow, old, low memory device https://cdn0.desidime.com/attachments/photos/365087/medium/2211669-Body-Brain-icon.png?1481005519 for now ! https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

i wouldn’t say envious but yes it is indeed a different satisfaction or joy to see any project grow right from inception or be the one to help make the baby. (Or put it on-to the growth path).

so yeah, in that sense you are lucky to have sat across both sides of the table. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_smile.gif

also, the post above about India was more of a response to @ralph2324. (it seemed like I directly responded below your post so it was to you)

Err, spoken like someone who hasn’t yet experienced the joy of seeing his/her kids grow. J/K. Like I have! https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif

Anyway, on a serious note, how long do you think it’ll be before IoT appliances make their way into Indian homes?

Indian Homes atleast 2 years ! We need to revolutionize our Network capabilities first and then we can expect IOT going big !
But once IOT penetrates the market it will cause havoc !! Countless possibilities , Countless scenarios !

Btw not kids ! But this was my pet project https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

Good work, bro. Any official submission to IEEE?

Ah, looking at the picture of a breadboard in that PDF was hair raising. I so miss playing with micro-controllers. Maybe I should spend my spare time on pursuing that hobby instead of trying to engage in serious discussions with school/college kids here. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

Is Arduino still the best kit for hobbyists?

Yup the official paper was accepted in the IEEE Sensor Networks meet hyderabad !
We rarely used Arduino …………. Buy the best components online according to the requirement and then build something cool !
Lots of Cool Stacks to play with !

But yes Arduino is still quite the charm !
