Despite not having been with him for 43 years, the Prime Minister’s wife is sure that Narendra Modi still has some feelings for her. 64-year-old Jashodaben, content to be recognised as the PM’s wife, spoke at length to mid-day at her relatives’ place in Mira Road yesterday, before she heads back to her home state of Gujarat today.

Perhaps it is the years of teaching, but she seems outspoken. She asserts, hope gleaming in her eyes, that she would go with Modi if he calls her even once. This was her first visit to Mumbai after Modi became PM. The last time she was here was in the’80s, when she was calling on an aunt in Sion. But things are different now: her movement sets in motion an entire cavalcade.
Wherever she goes, five police officers of the Gujarat Police, provided to escort her since May 30, accompany her. But she is not very fond of the trappings of being First Lady. Remarkably, while she travels in an auto rickshaw, the officers trail her in a sedan. She considers them a nuisance: “They are everywhere now, even in Mumbai.”
She was married to Modi in 1968, and three years after they tied the knot, she left Modi’s house and started on the path of her education, along which her father was instrumental in steering her. She claims that she doesn’t regret the course of her marital life much, because Modi, after all, had gone for desh seva service of the country.
While Mrs Modi wants to speak, and does speak a lot, she has a hearing problem, thanks again to a near-lifetime of teaching. For nearly 40 years, Jashodaben worked as teacher in a primary school in Vadgam district’s Rajoshana village, teaching Stds I to VII. At one time, she used to teach 89 students and the “very noisy” kids took their toll on her aural faculties. She retired five years ago.
Now, Jashodaben fasts four days a week, doesn’t eat rice and reserves all her prayers on Modi. In any case, talking to us on Friday, she appears joyous, saying, “Yes, there’s always a desire to be together, but the media portrayed it wrong.” “I will go and do his seva, he just has to give me a call. If he comes down to the building where I am right now and tells me that I should go with him, I will immediately join him.
I wish to be with him. If he calls me, I am eager to start a new life with him. But it has to be he who calls,” she says. She claims she had no problem talking to the media even earlier, but there was pressure on her not to. She didn’t say whom the pressure came from. In fact, for all these years, she has been dying to be recognised as the PM’s wife, keen to speak about her marriage, though she asks, “Kone kehva jau? (Whom do I tell?)”
The question is spoken with a gesture that betrays resignation to her fate. But when she speaks, it is about how she is hopeful that someday she will get her due as Narendra Modi’s wife. Hope had surfaced earlier this year when Modi acknowledged her as his wife while filing his nomination papers from Vadodara for the Lok Sabha elections. “ I was elated, there were tears in my eyes. I thought that now, as he had acknowledged me, things would change. Even he has a liking for me, I am sure, and hence he wrote my name (in the nomination paper,” she said, adding, “Temna manma mara mate ek so ek taka lagni chhe. (In his heart, he definitely has feelings for me).”
She writes off the rumours that during elections, she was shut away in a secret place. “I had been on a pilgrimage. I went to Gangasagar in Kolkata and various other places of worship, for him. I was very happy when he won.” Asked if she wished to go on tours with Modi, as wives of Prime Ministers are wont to do, she said, “How could I? But, if he shows me respect and calls me, I will.”
Jashodaben sports all the insignia of a married woman. She has on sindoor, a tika and a mangalsutra. The necklace had broken once, so she had stopped wearing it, but when Modi publicly declared that she was his wife, she got a new one. She follows every custom a wife does, and claims she will do so all her life.

Six months into the role, Jashodaben Chiman Modi has asked police why she must use the bus when her security detail travels in a government car and what perks she should be getting as the wife of the country’s most-powerful man.
“I am the wife of the prime minister and as per formal procedure, I want to know what other services am I supposed to get,” Mrs. Modi wrote in a submission under India’s right to information law, according to a spokeswoman at the police station where the document was received.
An odd request for such a person to make you might think but here’s the thing.
But, after Mr. Modi swept to power in May, his wife, a retired school teacher, was allotted 24-hour protection from five security commandos by the Gujarat police.
In the RTI application submitted Monday, Mrs. Modi stated that “I want to know under which legal clauses/provisions and acts of [Indian] Constitution have I been given the security cover,” according to the police spokeswoman. Mrs. Modi could not be reached for comment. A spokesman for the prime minister was not immediately available for comment.
Referring to the assassination of former prime minister of Indira Gandhi by her security guards in 1984, Mrs. Modi said she “is frightened by the presence” of the commandos and “asked for all the details of her personal bodyguards,” the spokeswoman said.
Besides, she also asked for information about the “other honors and benefits” she is authorized to receive as the prime minister’s wife.
“’I use public transport for commuting and the security guards follow me everywhere in their official car,’” Mrs. Modi said in the letter.
She has asked for the details to be provided to her within the next two days as “it is a matter of life and death,” she said in the letter according to the police spokeswoman.

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan has transferred one of its assistant directors from Ahmedabad to Andamans after the national broadcaster’s Gujarati channel aired a news item on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s estranged wife Jashodaben.

It’s not often that I get a chance to feel vindicated! A few weeks ago when MufflerMan devotees had voted him to power I had ruefully admitted that my tribe – comprising those not comfortable with him – was in a minority. With other like-minded people I had also urged the people of Delhi not to be complacent and to remain vigilant because this unlimited power handed over to the MufflerMan’s mob could have serious consequences. Not just for Delhi, but for the AAP, too. We need to become the street fighters that the AAP used to be before it morphed into just another establishment group with vested interests and the domination of one individual. Alas it already seems to have done so.
With older parties, this trend has evolved over a period of time. That the AAP so quickly succumbed to this temptation, and did not allow dissent or inner party democracy to grow is worrying. And the underhanded manner in which this was done makes it clear yet again that it has some rogue elements who are appreciated by the top echelons.
Among the first moves of this bunch has been the ritual humiliation and sidelining of two of its main intellectuals ( perhaps the only two ) that the party contains. The exit of Prashant Bhushan from the AAP’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee is particularly ironic. It is he and his father who idealistically had invested the first two crore rupees to built the party. It was a generous donation and coming from these two firebrand lawyers carried its own weighty message.
This was the financial oxygen that was used by the MufflerMan when he needed it. Now it is alleged that he used Anna Hazare with the same cynicism. And thus it is hardly surprising that while the current fracas was taking place, he maintained a studied silence.
But the story isn’t over yet , as now he is using us, the people of Delhi. One however hopes that the recent events will be the wake-up call that Delhi needs. Especially because while Prashant Bhushan might lack a popular following among the masses, the other ousted ideologue who dared question MufflerMan has a pretty hefty following of his own. Yogendra Yadav is no pushover, and unlike Prashant, he has devoted most of his time to building this party.
He might have been manipulated out of the politics of it, but one knows that while Yogendra is a long distance runner he is also scrupulously honest and unlike many of the recently elected MLAs, will not succumb to any kind of temptation. MufflerMan of course has already spread his wings and taken off for a “naturopathy” cure before he has had a chance to offer the suffering proletariat any cure for the various ills that Delhi reels under.
Fortunately, the muffler is beginning to unravel, showing the real power-hungry side of the MufflerMan and his mob. The good thing is that it has happened early, and alarm bells are already ringing among the shaken faithful

Infighting has started in the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi. Many leaders are not happy with the “autocratic” behaviour of Arvind Kejriwal. On one hand is Team Kejriwal, which wants full control over the party and Government, and on the other hand are Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, who want to take charge of the organisation.
In fact, control over the party is the real reason for infighting. Probably sensing this, Kejriwal offered to resign as the party’s national convener on Wednesday, just before the National Executive of the party was scheduled to meet in New Delhi to decide the fate of party rebels Yadav and Bhushan.
The internal Lokpal of the party, Admiral L Ramdas, had raised questions over the fact that Kejriwal held two posts simultaneously — that of the CM and national convenor. The issue of ‘one man, one post’ was raised earlier too, but Kejriwal supporters didn’t allow any discussion on this. His supporters are in the majority in the National Executive, and the Political Affairs Committee.
Fighting is not limited to ‘one man one post’ only, there is also a row over the selection of candidates for the Delhi Elections. Bhushan had raised questions over this, angering Kejriwal supporters. The issue of donations to the party also persists, and some of Kejriwal’s close aides are on the radar of Bhushan and Yadav. Then there is the issue of extension of the party in other States.

Narendra Modi is a great guy! Everyone has their own problems, some public some private. Lets help them with the public problems and allow them to manage their private ones.
Arvind Kejriwal is an amazing personality! He too has been voted as the CM recently, lets give him some time to know how everything actually works and sort his issues out.
In short, both of them are highly talented politicians with high amount of creativity and power. I believe they’re doing a really nice job and will let us know if they need our opinion about them and then we can share our feedback about their ways of working and help them in developing our nation.
And DO NOT compare them because they’re at different designations with different parties and work differently! Also, this section Dost and Dimes, as the name suggests is to make new friends and share things which we love and discuss about them, but trust me turning those discussions into arguments won’t really help!
