It's official: Lenovo owns Motorola..

The cash has been handed over, the contracts are signed and the lawyers are sipping champagne, which can only mean that Lenovo’s deal to buy Motorola has been completed. The purchase makes Lenovo the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, and the Chinese company has been quick to promise not to meddle. The outfit has pledged to keep Motorola based in Chicago, and CEO Rick Osterloh will keep his job at the head of the table. What will change, is that Motorola will now be able to sell its devices in Lenovo’s Asian and European strongholds, which should help the pair meet its pledge to sell 100 million smartphones and tablets this year. The pair have also pledged to return Motorola to profitability by mid-2016, which seems a lot more plausible with a stable of devices that include the Nexus 6, Droid Turbo and Moto 360.

Only part of Personal Communication Sector/ Motorola Mobility is junked by Google.
The original Motorola still exists as Motorola Solutions, but is a mere reflection of the previous combined entity.

Motorola Solutions is still around and not part of Google.

Google STILL holds the patents. Only the device manufacture, retailing, marketing and use of brand name has been passed on to Lenovo, BY CHOICE

are you even mildly aware of the larger scene DND ??

just like muscle, power and influence lets people steal, buy out or simply poach on others rights, ideas, money, women. the same muscle, power and influence can be used to pacify the aggrieved party.

Facebook pirated and lifted the whole idea from ConnectU and Winklevoss’es
Pharma buccaneers often just reverse engineer cash cow formulations of others.

simple group action suits or out of court settlements settle those issues: pay away the person suing you and still continue with business

But for manufacturers of hardware devices it was always bad.

Google too pirated patents of others (Keeps happening, its normal)
(look on-line for Apple Samsung etcetera quibbling over patents or IPR infringement).

But Google always has a battery of top shot legal teams and squeezes itself out of the mess.
But when their software/s (O.S., chrome) got incorporated by device manufacturers, then the real fun began

hell broke loose as original IPR holders sued every other hardware company that incorporated the tech or s/w of Google.

By now Google had a massive war chest of reserves and a bigger name in world.
They simple drooled and salivated over dysfunc but erstwhile blue chips like Motorola Mobility which has thousands of innovations over the years.

but the problem is that no mother leaves its child behind during remarriage.

Motorola’s (by then) pretty low profile and useless handset making business too was bought by Google.

Eventually, they [Google] kept the malai / cream [Read: patents of over half a century ] and spun off the hardware/ device making retail business into a separate company and jettisoned it to the first buyer who could pay up nice.

even today for Google, every night is passion night.. once the useless child is off their back.. its suhaag raat

now they “wtf” [to quote your exclamation] are the owners of the very stuff they stole earlier or their clients had to use in android phones.

Google did not ‘loose’ the business .. if you are familiar with shipping, then find out what the Incoterms like jetsam/jettison or Force Majeure are.

a cargo sea vessel Captain can jetsam/ jettison the dangerous cargo that might otherwise bring to the whole consignment or ship to peril. Such throwing away of part of the cargo with the objective of saving the remaining ship is perfectly acceptable standard practice in modern day sea trade

Google merely did the same with the business it poached away from a dead organisation which could not re-invent itself. relevant Motorola division/s were gobbled whole and later only the non required bits regurgitated out. Now any device maker using Android on board is safe from fear of ‘patent’ suit from Motorola, because Google bloody owns the patents now https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_wink.gif
