I recently hired Uber Go in Pune. The base fare was ₹ 35 + ₹ 1 / min + ₹ 6 / KM. These details are also available on their website: https://www.uber.com/cities...e/

My total fare for my ride came to ₹ 138.

I was also curious about Uber’s model for India, so, I asked similar question to the driver.

He was friendly and shared following details.

He had signed 3 year contract with Uber for his car (Maruti Suzuki Ritz). The car was brand new. He had purchased it just last week, solely for Uber. He was driving some other car for Uber earlier. Also, Uber requires the cars to have a “Commercial” number plate.

Under the contract, he cannot take his car out of Pune city limits. Uber had installed a GPS device in the car and tracks the car’s movement, 24 × 7, whether or not he is driving for Uber. If he has to take the car out of Pune for personal reasons, he has to communicate to Uber and they allow such exceptions.

Coming to the money part. Under the contract, Uber has two options for the drivers, 10 trips per day and 16 trips per day.

If you sign up for 10 trips per day option, you are paid ₹ 2,100 per day on completing 10 trips for the day.

If you sign up for 16 trips per day option, you are paid ₹ 3,600 per day on completing 16 trips for the day.

The driver had signed for option 2, i.e. 16 trips per day. He works from 6:00 AM to midnight.

My assumption was that the trips earn a little over ₹ 3,600 and that extra amount might be Uber’s profit. However, based on this driver’s experience, that was not the case. His average earning is less than ₹ 200 per trip. He keeps the money the passengers pay him and the balance amount is transferred to his bank account every week. As per his experience, he has never earned more than ₹ 3,600 in a day for 16 trips.

I asked him, what if he gets lucky and gets long trips that takes his daily tally over ₹ 3600? To this he replied, if he get’s long trips, he cannot complete 16 trips in a day and then he falls to 10 trips a day category.

Out of the ₹ 3,600, Uber charges his ₹ 300 per day for fees.

His other expenses:

₹ 600 / day for CNG for his car

₹ 450 / month for data card for his phone (He used some idea data card, which gave him unlimited data, but that card does not have calling features)

₹ 8,000 / month for his car loan instalment

He works 6 days a week. So his average monthly earning comes to:

(₹ 3,600 – ₹ 300 – ₹ 600) * 24 = ₹ 64,800.

After deducting the car loan instalment and other car related expenses, He must be making some where around ₹ 55,000 per month.

This information is based on what I got to know from the driver for Uber GO. This might be different for Uber X and Uber Black.
