now Publishing houses join hands to stop predatory pricing by Flipkart and Amazon on books

“We tried talking to Flipkart and Amazon about the pricing issue but they’ve become too big for our voice to reach them,” said one of the publishers who is a part of the alliance that counts Rupa, Penguin Random House and Hachette as members. “Therefore, we decided to take the legal route.” The associations include Federation of Indian Publishers, Delhi State Booksellers and Publishers Association, and Federation of Publishers and Bookseller’s Association.

“Amazon and Flipkart are creating a duopolistic environment, which is destroying the publishing industry,” said Kinjal Shah, CEO of Crossword Bookstore. “They are getting into predatory pricing—selling 10-20% below the purchase price, making it absolutely impossible for anyone else to compete with them over price.” According to industry body FICCI, the Indian publishing industry is worth Rs 12,000 crore and is growing at about 25% annually.

Boycott en masse all business houses that try to manipulate market, promote cartelization and put obstacles in the way of a FREE MARKET ECONOMY https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_evil.gif

Let these people know that gone are the days of supply side economics in India. In today’s globalisation scenario, economies function primarily through demand pull. It is virtually impossible to control all manufacturers at once. So if you do not want to sell, then step aside and somebody else will.

Good news is that Samsung has already said (as read from a Times of India news report), that it will not penalize e-tailers for giving big discounts. It has further said that they will let customers decide which marketing channels they would prefer to use https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_lol.gif
In short, in today’s world, CUSTOMER IS THE KING and if somebody tries to artificially manipulate the system then it is bound to fail.

Why just books… the monopoly is on every kid of products with companies & cartel of their dealers.

I am looking for SHARP 1.5 ton AC this festive season & there is only one dealer in my city (which is a state capital). He is offering a whooping 1500/- discount on MRP of 54990/- Same model was selling online (SnapDeal) for Rs. 40233/- last week. Too bad Snapdeal does not ship to non metros such bulky products otherwise would have snatched it..

They deliberately want consumer to pay more hence the hog wash of warranty problems every now or then.

see the first post you will know why only books. ridiculous indirect tax collection is also governments main source of income. less discount more tax collection. who cares for middle class.

Yeah but also consider the other side. More discounts means more sales which also means more taxes.

Rs. 2000 Book is being sold at 80% discount i.e. Rs. 400. Had this discount not been there then that Book would be collecting dust on the shelves in the store. So after sales at Rs. 400 government is getting at least some taxes.

Major e-tailers like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal sell in one hour what a whole small town probably sells in a whole day. Sometimes offers are so irresistible that people are accumulating multiple quantities of the same item in their houses. And even sometimes buying items for which they have no need. So, who is driving the economy. The Mom and Pop local store or these e-tailers even if e-commerce is still in its infancy. And also consider the future potential and impact on the economy when India is slowly converting itself from a predominantly Savings oriented economy to a more dynamic Spending based economy.

Now with e-tailing, the rules of the game have changed and this is worldwide. So, either the regular retailers have to adapt to this scenario or fall by the wayside.

And either way the customer will benefit.

The above discussions here, cover only a small gamut of the issues involved. There are a multitude of other points as well. But we as customers have been taken for granted and exploited in India for so long that now this sudden change is bringing in a breathe of fresh air.

Allegations are that these e-tailers are indulging in predatory pricing. One has to keep in mind that abnormal discounts cannot continue indefinitely as in that case it will not be sustainable. But it will continue intermittently as a way of market wars and a consequent greater market share. As a result a shakeout will take place in the industry. Bigger players will have an advantage in sustaining temporary losses and those who cannot adapt under the circumstances (such as taking a niche position in the industry) will be deleted.

Besides these short bursts of discounts are clearing inventories as well for these companies. If a company wants to sell off say 500 pieces of a given item at a very low margin or at cost or even at a small loss, then who better to approach than companies such as Amazon who will probably achieve it within the hour by giving the customer the benefit of this low margin. These e-tailers have certain inherent advantages which will allow them to pass on the maximum discounts to the consumers. Many of them do not even hold on to inventories but are shipped from the manufacturers site. Therefore high volumne selling albeit at heavy discounts by these e-tailers are also helping the manufacturers in sustaining or increasing their output which in turn augers well for the general economy. The previous ideology of holding on to the profit/item is no longer acceptable. Now the all important mantra is the Net Profit and for this if volume of selling can be increased albeit with temporary discounts resulting in higher Net Profit then it is totally justified.

So, I feel that these retailers who have failed to adjust their strategy to combat this new threat, would do well to adapt to the changed scenario rather than crying foul over predatory pricing etc and wasting precious time otherwise they will be ultimately washed away by the building up of the tsunami. And communists will be raising a hue and a cry but it will only fall on deaf ears as customers will always be the majority and will call the shots. In fact you might be a small hardware retailer who will be hating Flipkart for giving that 50% discount in Bosch drills and taking away his customers but you will certainly love when you yourself is the customer shopping for that elusive 70% discount for a Adidas tee shirt at another site.

Boy, I love these academic discussions and shopping at heavy discounts even if it is unnecessary https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif .
