Opinion about Zuk Z1 after using it for a while today

So I got a chance to use the Lenovo Zuk Z1 today in fan meetup that happened in Hyderabad and here is my view about the sub-brand and the device.

Lenovo seems to have branched this brand to cater users that are extremely experimental and for users who are concerned more about the experience than the benchmark ratings and specs. The phone supports rooting and does not void the warranty as well.

Coming to the experience. It’s truly a balance of software and hardware, if you look at the Antutu scores or look at the features they may not be appealing but everything put as a package gives you the perfect experience!

There are many tiny features that matter on a day to day usage. One such example I want to cite is the battery management to avoid micro cycles that kill the battery on a longer run. On a typical device when you plug it in for charging and just let it be that way even after the battery is fully charged the battery executes some micro cycles – the battery is discharged to around 99.5% then charged to around 100% and then again to 99.5% etc. These micro cycles kill the battery life on a longer run as it is wasting charging cycles. But on Zuk Z1, it is the first phone in the world to have a better battery management (adopted the feature from Thinkpad laptop series). Once the battery reaches 100% the power is drained directly from the power adapter and not from battery thus avoiding discharge of battery until you plug out the battery adapter and thus avoiding micro cycles.

The build quality of the device is great, especially the grey one that sports a matte finish back as opposed to the glossy finish on white. Only point to crib about is the large bezel size all around.

Other hardware feature I disliked is the camera, it seemed to perform crappier than my Redmi Note 3 cam.

The UI is as close to stock as possible so it was super smooth and swift for general usage and app launches.

I see huge potential for Zuk series of devices if priced below 20k.

Pricing matters
It would be interesting if Lenovo goes for aggressive pricing may be around 10k-12k
Although the OS is cyanogen, still its on Android 5.1
Not sure when the marshmallow update will be arriving
May be this would’ve instant hit even for 15-20k if they had launched it last year because it supports both CDMA and GSM bands
and now its nothing special apart from build and as u said white one looks cheap with plastic back

I happened to be talking to Varun of Fonearena and he is predicting a price close to 20k. Even though the Zuk Z2 has been announced in china already the Z1 is still a decent buy for 20k but will not have huge sales for sure. Vibe X3 from Lenovo is still a better buy at 20k mark.

Coolpad note 3 plus launch on May 6
Zuk Z1 launch on May 10
Meizu m3 note launch on May 11

Too much competition for 10-15k price segment
I am guessing both Note 3 plus and M3 note will be priced at 10k

If you followed my FB wall you would know that I used lot more Android devices than iPhones but I would always go back to an iPhone at some point of time as I am more convenient with iOS. In fact I used almost every major Android device till 2014 right from HTC G1 in 2008.

Apart from that I have used windows mobile devices, Maemo OS (Nokia N900) and Meego (Nokia N9) and WebOs (palm pre 2) too since 2007, post-symbian era for me.

Chinmay? Kidding me? I can’t even dream of doing that. He owns/collects almost every iOS device till date! https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

Whatever is the performance is but the pricing.

20K for a phone which is running on a. 2 years old 32 bit soc.
Isthat really worthy investigating 20K for this ?

So they need to rethink before launching that phone in India, priced it right , or launch the pro version of it instead with a btr soc and latest android version.

They will find it hard to sell it for 20k.
Imo they shouldn’t price it more than 14k. I would be more happy if they would have used Snapdragon 650 instead of snapdragon 801. i don’t remember if 801 supports all the 4g bands in India

Zuk sub brand is not for the masses. It’s very purpose is to cater to specific customer who value performance more than specs and benchmark tests and for people who like to tweak the device without worrying about the warranty.
