R Com CDMA customers are getting the following SMS
“Dear Customer,we are upgrading CDMA network to 4G shortly. As a preferred customer, await our invitation to experience the BEST4G network.RCOM

Recently they have also acquired MTS so now they have large volume of spectrum in 800 Mhz band which would be converted to Band 5 LTE. Band 5 LTE is more efficient due to shorter wave length. RCom and Rjio also have interconnect agreement for spectrum sharing. So the combined RCom-Rjio 4G would be operating on Band 3 (1800), Band 5 (850) and Band 40 (2300) Mhz. Right now only few handsets support all 3 bands.

Times of change for all CDMA users.

There is a thriving online community of RCDMA users which include WebWorld franchisees also. Based on the information available through them,

1. Right now, AP, Delhi, MP, Gujarat, Mumbai-Maharastra-Goa, MP-Chattisgarh, UP, Kolkata-WB, Haryana and Punjab are getting upgraded. But remaining circles would also be upgraded soon.
2. In most circles, the CDMA-EVDO service would be completely stopped by 31st May and the spectrum would be diverted to LTE Band 5.
3. For voice call there would be automatic fall back to R-GSM 2G/3G network.
4. For upgrade to 4G, all the customer has to do is purchase a 4G ready SIM, cost expected to be Rs.25, and send a sms from his CDMA number with the 19 digit new 4G SIM identification number. The new SIM would get activated and the old SIM would get deactivated.
5. MNP (port-out>port-in) not required and existing postpaid plans/prepaid balances would be carried forward to the 4G SIM. however, there may be a change of tariff rates later on.
6. CDMA user can use the 4G SIM in normal 2G/3G GSM handset also for Voice and SMS.
7. For 4G to work, the handset must support LTE Band 5 (850 Mhz) but should preferably support Band 5 + Band 3 + Band 40 and VoLTE.

Note: As the above is a compilation of information from user end and retailers, there may be some gaps.

CDMA spectrum was sold in 2002 to Reliance Infocomm at same price that of GSM or I should say GSM operators got 4.4 MHz and free top up spectrum based on increase in customers until 2010 while CDMA operators had 2.5-3.75 MHz only and no free top-ups. So GSM operators had cost exchequer over Rs. 87k crores by enjoying free top-up spectrum for 8 years. CDMA operators never got their right fully. lol

Now RCOM paid ~ Rs. 6.9k crores to DoT to convert the same to 4G for remaining period. For ex- In 2015 auction, for Punjab circle cost of 1 MHz of spectrum came out to be Rs. 87.24 crores for 20 years. For 1 MHz per year it is Rs. 4.36 (87.24/20) crores. In Punjab RCOM CDMA spectrum is valid till 2027 means 12 years are remaining and they held 3.75 MHz. So final cost they paid is = 3.75*(4.36/MHz/Year X 12years)= Rs. 196.20 crores. Also they took 2.5 MHz extra during 2015 auctions in Punjab circle for Rs. 214.62 crores which is valid till 2035.

When they renew their older spectrum, it will cost much higher later.
