Can anyone help -

Does it really make much difference in electricity consumption/bills?

I tried getting an idea through various URLs at google. Seems mix replies.

Suppose if my monthly bill on AC is 5K, using 5 start AC. How much can we expect I use 2 start or 3 star AC???/

First keep in mind that every year your star rating system will be down by one star. Your 5 star AC this year will become 4 Star in next year and so on. Now as per consumption part , you may experience some lesser cooling than the 2 or 3 star as 5 Star will try to optimize the power consumption.

Now for the billing part a lot of factors comes in to the picture like room facing, wall area, floor etc etc….

You got the idea now use your brain. or contact Captain @Spock for evening classes. https://cdn2.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_toungueout.gif

couldn’t have been as precise, crisp and (for most part) as spot ON as this.

Just a different thought though, in so far as i know > star ratings are not inversely proportional to cooling efficiency. [isfaik, the so called ratings relate to energy efficiency and at times to enviornmental impact]

and in, Now for the billing part a lot of factors comes
the average daily use ought to be considered too.
[since most energy loss/wastage is at the point of frequent cut-off and start of the compressor. (in non invertor tech. models)]
so, if it for short spans say: 2-3 hours daily viz-a-víz continuous 8-10 hours daily.. then the likelihood of the latter giving more bang for the bucks is higher.
Here too the type of enviornment matters. If it is a high migratory footfall area like a showroom or if frequent loss of cool air due to opening of door/window then too one can not give random judgements on ‘power bill’ value.

one additional factor is structure heat (how much the place gets heated up like terrace flats compared to a 1st floor flat.
window size. mine is 30 feet. so installed SunGard privacy film which reduces incoming radiating heat from outside as well as outside heat bleeding iut cooling fron window.
if you have wooden furniture covering the side walk s thats better. steel furniture draw in cooling so needs more power but also release the cooling slowly so still work adter a/c switched off.

these will help maintain the cold environment follow the steps suggested by above in thread.
I know some fellows who put a/c to full and sleep with a thick wollen blanket.
spreading a carpet on floor will also help to reduce power wastage.
if having bathroom in the room cover tge doir with plastic shower curtain so cold aur doesn’t bleed out.

@sunnie

Here are a few tips i have for you.

1) First and the most important factor while selecting air conditioner is " Tonnage". Most of the online Tonnage calculators are not accurate when it comes to Indian conditions since those calculators are meant for western homes which doesn’t see as high temperatures as we do in India and moreover, homes abroad tends too be much better planned and insulated.

Use the below excel sheet to calculate tonnage requirement for your room :

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/attachments/gadge...

2) Buy the most efficient AC you can afford . Trust me, you will recover your money within the next 2-3 years. If you can afford, by all means go for inverter AC. Recommend brands are Sharp & Daikin. Inverter AC tends to be 30-40% more efficient than a 5 star air conditioner. I have a sharp 1.1 Ton unit installed on my 150 Sq feet bedroom. Sharp unit is on for 12 hours a day and it consumes roughly 5.5 units of electricity. Another bedroom has an 8 year old 1 star LG 1 ton unit which consumes around 12 unit for 12 hours.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioner_i...

3) Ensure that you insulate your home properly. There should not be any unnecessary gap anywhere especially under windows and doors. Placement of air conditioner is equally important as well. Go through articles online to read more about placement of indoor AC unit.

4) Get the best technician money can buy. No matter how expensive, technologically sound product you buy, if you end up getting a bad technician , he will screw your installation which will have a direct effect on AC’s efficiency. if you are buying Daikin, insist the dealer to send Daikin’s in house technicians. Those guys know what they are doing. Sharp technicians are noobs. You will be better off hiring one by yourself. Don’t depend on dealer to assign a tech. Do your research and get the best tech. A good technician will charge anywhere between 1.5- 3.0k for installation.

Good luck.

The best decision i made 3 years back was opting for an inverter air conditioner. I have bought a few of them over the years and they have worked great. Electricity bills have seen 50-70% drop after upgrading to inverter AC’s.

I wouldn’t trust both. If you are no other choice other than the 2, i would pick Voltas. LG air conditioners starts to trip when temp hits 48 degrees. When it comes to AC, nothing beats the Japanese. Korean brand such as Samsung, LG are far behind in both efficiency and reliability..

I may not affirmatively speak from personal experience at 48, but some close ones who have used LG too in the coal belt of India (Chandrapur/ Gadchandur) haven’t really faced ^ this ^ kind of issues.

and though we have used various LG units for over 17-18 years at various locations, i am not writing this as I patronise LuckyGoldstar.

It is just that chaebols in general are aggressive and LG in particular has been a fast learner AND adaptive in the Indian markets.
[I am restricting these views w.r.t. heavy appliances and gadgets like washing machine, refrigeration products and the odd kitchen appliances: and not for electronics like mobiles.]

No doubt I would forever trust a National or a Sanyo more, as i grew up to seeing some of their amazing products survive the most.
probably the reliability ‘of the product’ is as good in a Mitsubishi or Hitachi.

but cross my heart, the Japs are arrogant and snobbish I might say when it comes to treating the Indian consumer (who loves getting pampered with kid gloves).

May be I’ve said this earlier and I repeat, I’ve had almost first person knowledge of discussions of the extent of a 120-130 tonn cooling requirement (in Purwakarta) in late 1990s’ nd by jove!

they really take pride in their product.
Someone from the technical/ plant Ops. guys might have asked the Mitsubishi people (in second stage negotiations)
about the likelihood of getting support in case of breakage/downtime and the lead negotiator just gave him a cold stare and says>>

Mistar _______ , you are buying a Mitsubishi . Our products do not fail. just call (only) us for maintenance every-time.
[you have to imagine this in a Japanese accent. Just by chance some of their teams were in Sg and thus a senior (age-wise) technical person had come over to Purwakarta]

It was almost like he did not even trust the (Indian Co’s) plant operation people to touch his cooling plant after purchasing also [just call (only) us]

so the point is, after Indo National Limited (Nippo batteries) National Panasonic have only now since past 6-7 years thought of giving customised products for South Asian markets.

Daikin, Hitachi still prefer to let only their name sell, often many second rung cities just do not get adequate support post sales.
The pricing and the pride (that our product is fit to be sold as it is) has made them loose to the buggers like LG Samsung who were more responsive.

all in all, I think that if people are ready to settle for the not so savvy marketeers like Sharp or are ready to pay for a Panasonic or Daikin, then they usually get as value for money VFM product as the chaebols.

Are you sure Daikin units sold in India are only assembled here, not manufactured? CKD units are heavily taxed. Not sure why Daikin wouldn’t manufacture them in India. I was happy to notice that out of 10 hotels i visited in last 2 months, 5 were running Daikin centralized unit. I must admit that the cooling was excellent. It is good to know that a reputed HVAC manufacturer has taken Indian market seriously.

I was looking for the same but in inverter ac section. I always prefer lg. There was no such models of inverter + hot and cold. Thankfully lg just launched the same and will be available locally by a week or 2.

Always buy inverter ac if you are running 7+ hrs a day. They work like – first 15-20 mins it will be as 1.5 ton and consume 1600 watts or something like that, after 20 minutes it will down by 1/3 and act lyk 0.5 ton ac with power consumption of 500 watts. Just 5-7k extra for this and enjoy high usage without fearing of bills.
This ac don’t come up with any star ranking like 4 or 5 star, it’s in their own kind SUPER STAR. https://cdn1.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_biggrin.gif

I loved the way you explained it. I can also relate to that energy saving part. After testing Sharp inverter AC extensively for a few days , I came to a conclusion that it saves around 50-70% power than conventional AC’s. BTW, Sharp units also has Economy mode. Once the room is cooled, Economy mode consumes as little has .2 to .3 unit per hour.

If someone wants a technical explanation. read below :

How inverter air conditioners work?
Inverter, a device in the air conditioner, controls frequency of power supplied to compressor motor.
Compressor motor controls the rotational speed of the compressor and the compressor ensures refrigerant flow is commensurate with the cooling requirement of the room.
In contrast non-inverter air conditioners have fixed compressor that cannot increase or decrease their speed and refrigerant flow rate as per cooling requirement of the room and work at one given capacity only.
Thus variable speed of the compressor ensures not only better temperature control but they also reduces power consumption by upto 71%*

I’m pretty sure Daikin will have the same level of Quality control in Indian plant as well. If you are opting for Daikin, ensure that you get the installation done by Daikin In-house technicians only. They do an excellent job. There is also a warranty clause somewhere which says warranty is void if installation is not carried out by a Daikin trained tech. Daikin technicians use to follow a practice of clicking AC pictures after installation and mailing them to Daikin office to validate warranty, not sure of this practice is followed even these days.

CT bhai OG tou OG hai. It can not be called cheap in performance, the Dubai trick (of routing good via tax free/ low tax zones) is good if it helps us.
and before the power outage crashed my machine I was intrigued and my interest in Napoleon piqued .
Great to know that Indian ingenuity at its best means we get the best core performance without the costs of the brand goodwill.

Truly like the French Napoleon : chota package; bada dhamaka

no denying that you would not be saying something strong with conviction and these above
first person account does seem to hold merit.

Cybertechie bro, to be fair, i too mostly speak of the first generation units (when LG had just entered) and it was still selling their Korean made units.
and later, the partly localised models.

During the months of may you can hear the neighbors pissed since their AC never cooled the rooms properly. You can hear some complaining of tripping.

Governmental power distribution companies #SMH
It has been de rigueur to mess up appliances with the sudden outages and the huge spikes when power return.

what you say could well be true. although we always made sure that the unit’s capacity is adequate considering various requirements. (some of the ones Dharmanath touched above about sun conditions vis-à-vis the structure). And ensured the preventive checks and servicing even from a local boy after warranty expiry too.
But these all, like you said are my experiences in sub 43 degrees. the Gadchandur/Gadchiroli units were used by acquaintances.

IMO first get your nearby trusty mechanic’s opinion about the brands that have ‘real’ A.S.S.
these companies are yet to invest as heavily in workforce or offices like the people (LG/Samsung) who have been ‘serious’ players since 15-16 years.

The Hitachi/Daikin scenario in many (but not all) cities is a bit ‘ram-raajya’; whereby they offer lucrative offers/ phamily phoren trips to maximise sales and often let the hassled user having to deal with the dealer/distributor for after sales even under warranty.

what i mean to say is, the brand also appoints the dealers’ firm for official post sales service etcetera.
but the Indian business mentality, you know what happens. it is painful to know that after paying through the nose, often untrained or local teenage kids or such guys in 20s are hired as contract labour by the distributor/dealer and sent to customer as ‘hum Daikin sei aaye hein’ [on probing it transpires that the dealer/distributor has merely asked those kids in peak season to install/ repair 4-5 units a day during peak times]

if yours isn’t too big a set-up like a villa or such, which requires 10-12hours daily with over 18000BTU capacity, then also consider Panasonic models (try to take previous year model. like in 2015, they have CS-123456PKY and in 2016 they might make minor cosmetic or real changes and CU-123456PKU and a 15% mark-up over previous year.

Would still keep an eye out if by chance something known comes up in Chennai.

my memory from a brief conversation with the local (industrial level) distributor is over an year old and since our 1 tonn (2 Nos.) and a non-inverter is that he said these units aren’t yet being ‘made’ here.

also the SEZ guys i knew told of things just picking up.
may be over time and taking into account the localisation commitments Daikin (and others) have increased the ratio of local component sourcing. the cluster/ecosystem was still picking up back then and the Japs did not have to bargain much on tax breaks and easier SEZ terms because both: the Rj. government and the Centre were ready to bend over backwards so long as some “investments”, “job creation” could be shown.

@nrkmca i suppose you can consider what Bhaskar says
although @Bhaskar i am flummoxed at finding a Dimer looking forward to such niche products: Panasonic CS/CU-YE12PKY 1.0 was tad out of my mental budget bhai. and from the dealer my Paa was taking was unfortunately a known person so not much scope of price squeeze. had to drop the idea of an H&C as i only wanted to use Panasonic this time and Paa only wanted everything inverter tech https://cdn3.desidime.com/assets/textile-editor/icon_sad.gif

nrkmca i sincerely suggest, that like cybertechie bhai and Bhaskar or myself, you too ‘study’ and understand some basics from a variety of sites .

for example, check http://www.panasonic.com/in/consumer/home-appli...

brands often miss-sell by wrongly ‘naming’ the models. ONLY look at BTU to find tonnage (12000 British Thermal Unit = 1 tonn)

ask the tech guys of brands, probing questions like: what is moisture removal capacity or whether the fins are of aluminium and coil of copper or the whole thing is copper.

also, I’d say one should always look at their own budget and requirement. Inverter tech is good but not always a must.
in long term it helps, if average use is 10+ hours at a stretch.

an inverter unit basically never switches the compressor off when indoor unit is ON.
only the whiring goes slow. so the power wastage of every cut-off and switch on is saved, as also

like when electric cars brake/decelarate but save the energy by giving it back to the battery,

in Inverter Fridge/Aircons too the energy is reused, thus power efficiency.
the reason they do not get star ratings is because the International Standard to ‘test’ them on a common metric is still too debated and not fixed
