The Secrets of Old Age

To those of us who are already there

And to those who will soon be there

Before middle age– Do not fear!

After middle age– Do not regret!

Enjoy Your Life While You Can!

Do not wait till you cannot even walk just to be sorry and to regret.

As long as it is physically possible, visit places you wish to visit.

When there is an opportunity, get together with old classmates, old colleagues & old friends.

The gathering is not just about eating; it’s just that there is not much time left.

Money kept in the banks may not be really yours.

When it is time to spend, just spend, & treat yourself well as you’re getting old.

Whatever you feel like eating, just eat! It is most important to be happy.

Foods which are good for health– eat often and more- but that is not everything.

Things which are not good for health– eat less but once in a while.

Do not abstain from them totally.

Treat sickness with optimism. Whether you are poor or rich,

Everyone has to go through the birth, aging, sickness and death.

There is no exception, that’s life. Do not be afraid or worried when you are sick.

Settle all the outstanding issues before hand and you will be able to leave without regret.

Let the doctors handle your body, God handles your life & loves you, but be in charge of your own moods

If worries can cure your sickness, then go ahead and worry.

If worries can prolong your life, then go ahead and worry.

If worries can exchange for happiness, then go ahead and worry.

Our kids will make their own fortune.

Look after Four Old Treasures:

1. Your old body– pay more attention to health; you can only rely on yourself on this.

2. Retirement funds– money that you have earned, it is best to keep them yourself.

3. Your old companion– treasure every moment with your other half, one of you will leave first.

PERFECT LOVE

4. Your old friends– seize every opportunity to meet up with your friends.

Such opportunities will become rarer as time goes by.

Running water does not flow back.

Neither does Life!! So make it count….

Links to well-being

Follow through a chain of affirmative actions…

Bharat Savur

Misalignment between inner knowing of what’s good for you and outer action keeps you uneasy.

If your life is less than joyous, you may be living solely on the surface where you are exposed and vulnerable to external influences without the inner strength and power required to offset the tremors.

To explain: say, you lose a major project. This is Loss Number One. Now, the important thing is not to subject yourself to Loss Number Two: depression, high blood pressure, headache, backache… afflictions that strikes when you are stressed.

Instead, repeatedly affirm this truth during a difficult period, “I am not this problem.” When you stop identifying yourself with the problem, you gradually restore your sense of inner equilibrium and align yourself with the right way to proceed to the best solution. More importantly, you do not fall ill.

Often, the way forward needs one step back. There’s no point in rushing headlong if the direction is wrong. Examine whether you are on the path of wholeness or have taken detours that are subtly sapping you.

Self-evaluation should not dwindle into self-castigation, but develop into a positive infrastructure to step forward and upward.

Often, a misalignment between inner knowing of what’s good for you and outer action keeps you uneasy. Something is missing. What? A link! Yes, you need effective links to click on — as on the Net — to follow through and…bingo! All’s well!

Link 1. Meditate deeply. Eyes closed, breathe in the rhythm and pace of the tide flowing, ebbing… until a beautiful stillness steals all over body and mind. Be in this stillness until you feel a tingling power arise in you. This signals that you are completely relaxed and the muscles need to express this power.

Link 2. Stretch gently. Stand, raise your hands to the ceiling, s-t-r-e-t-c-h. Next, bend sideways to the left and right. If your body spontaneously ‘asks’ for any specific exercise, do it. Remember, the body finds a simple living joy in breathing, stretching and any rhythmic exercise.

  • Link 3*. Drop all masks. You cannot be at peace when you are owned by what you think you are supposed to be. You’re a slave to an image which prevents you from relaxing inwardly. Be simple in your needs, your lifestyle. When you live in this simplicity, you resonate with a sense of authenticity, wholeness, strength, lightness and, yes, joy!

Link 4. Do something kind. There may be times when everything seems achingly pointless, as if you are simply wasting your time. Just as the sedentary, lethargic body gets small niggling aches that disappear after you exercise, when life is lived mechanically, ungratefully, hedonistically and selfishly we are filled with a grey sense of meaningless. This means we need to exercise other kinds of muscles — the muscle of kindness, for example. If every day you practise speaking kindly, looking at everybody with fond eyes, thinking loving thoughts and having only decent motives, life’s meaning and purpose will begin to glow as joy. It makes you feel all is right with your world and helps you sleep sweetly.

Link 5. Eat for ease. Fat-filled foods, salty foods make the body feel heavy and lethargic. Excess caffeine and sugar make you jittery and de-focussed. So, reduce or avoid them. Go for: Oats: rich in filling fibre and calming melatonin. Bananas: soothe with melatonin and serotonin, and their magnesium-content relaxes muscles. Flax seeds: lift your mood with their omega-3 fatty acids. Warm milk: its tryptophan calms the brain. Curd: settles an uneasy stomach by eliminating bad bacteria. Spinach: beats fatigue with its B-vitamins, its iron-content helps transport oxygen to all cells, and it’s a beautiful cleanser. Pulses: banish muscle-weakness with their matrix of protein-carbohydrate content. Tips: After every meal, have 1-2 trifala tablets to strengthen digestion and immune system. Have a pudinhara capsule for acidity or gas. Finally, eat when you are calm, chew slowly and with gratitude as if every morsel is precious and delicious.

Link 6. Laugh habitually — yes, it’s as simple as that!

Dearest Friends,

I once read somewhere, in the board meetings of Google, they not only analyse the profits they have made for the year, they also analyse the profits they ‘could have made’ that year. In other words, they believe, the year gone by ‘cannot’ be termed as good, bad or great, unless they have made the most of the opportunities they had. There is no point in celebrating a profit of billions of dollars if they ‘could’ have made a few more billions they did not. They analyse, why they did not take the decisions that could have generated more profits. Was it oversight? Was it carelessness? Was it preoccupation with other comparatively trivial things? Was it inability to understand an opportunity or a trend? Was it sheer laziness? Was it inefficiency? Was it on grounds of ethics? Was it lack of expertise? Was it deliberate? They ponder over these questions. If they are convinced about the grounds of ‘letting go’ of those profits, they celebrate. They pat themselves on the back. Otherwise, even if they have made a few billion dollars, they say, this year we ‘lost’ a few billion dollars.

Its simple, if I could make a profit of Rs 100/- and yet I made a profit of only Rs 10/-, shall I call it a profit of Rs 10/- or a loss of Rs 90/-?

They not only calculate the profits, they also analyse the ‘lost profits’. I have no idea if this is just folklore or true. However, this does make a lot of sense. This calculation has helped me a lot in my life.

Allow me to present another sum. What is the cost of going and seeing a movie? Is it only the ticket cost? Or, is it the ticket cost plus the cost of eatables? Lets say the ticket cost is Rs 250/- + Rs 150 for the grub consumed = Rs 400/-. This is the ‘visible’ cost. There is an invisible component to the cost too.

In the three hours that I was in the theatre, lets say, I missed an opportunity to meet our fantastic and inspirational ex president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. I desperately wanted to be with my friends who were all going out for the movie. I did not want to be left out. I lusted for the movie and lost an opportunity to be with a historical person. Now, what did the movie cost me? Just Rs 400/- or more than that?
Clearly, the cost of the movie was MORE than Rs 400/-.

Seth Godin writes, ‘Just about everyone is in the business of selling their time in some form, it’s important to be aware that even if something doesn’t cost you cash out of your wallet, the opportunity cost is not only real, it’s just as valuable.’

Our greatest asset is our life. In our life, our greatest asset is our time. To use this time, we say ‘YES’ to a few things and ‘NO’ to a few things. Think twice before you say yes or no. Think not only about the direct cost but also about the indirect cost.

When I sleep late at night watching a useless movie or serial, what is the cost I have paid? Is it just sleep? Or, is it much more than that? Is it freshness the next morning? Is it skipping exercise next morning? Is it lethargy for the rest of my day? Is it missed meditation? Is it feeling stupid about myself the next entire day? What is the total cost? Did I learn something out of it or do I keep on repeating the same mistake, forever?

When I smoke or drink, what is the cost I am paying? Is it just the money that is direct cost? Do I actually end up paying much more than that? What about the cost of health? What about the time I spent? In that time, what else could I have done? I could have addressed the insecurity my child had developed for one of her friends called her a ‘fool’. She needed to know if she was a ‘good’ girl. A hug from me would have served the purpose. However, I was somewhere wasting myself drinking. So what did this drinking cost me? Just money and time or much more than that?

When I decide to do something with my time, I gain something and I lose something. For me to take a good decision, I need to know, is it worth what I have gained and what I have lost.

When I argue, what do I gain? What do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I keep brooding over an insignificant event, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it just peace of mind (though that is invaluable) or much more? Is it worth it?
When I lie, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I pretend to be what I am not, when I act righteous to save my face and to gain control, what do I gain and what do I lose?
When I have an extra-marital affair, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I have opportunities but I don’t them grab them for I am afraid, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I keep on waiting for the world to change, crib about the lack of momentum in affairs, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I shout at my loved ones, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I speak bad about people behind their back, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I over eat for the joy of a few seconds, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I carry hurt in my heart, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?
When I hold on to ego and let go of relationships and my peace of mind, what do I gain and what do I lose? Is it worth it?

Regrets have no value. Never ! Guilt kills you. Slowly ! Be on guard against regrets and guilt.

A man saved a teenager. When the saved teen thanked the savior, the savior just smiled and said, "Make sure the life I saved was worth saving.’

Take a moment and reflect. Do what fills you with pride. Drop whatever is not worth it. You and me have only a single life to live. Lets live it with pride. Lets make it WORTH IT.

A new French law – breathalyser

From July 1, a new law will come into effect in France that requires all motorists including tourists to carry a portable breathalyser unit as part of their safety equipment or face a fine.

The fine for being caught without a breath testing unit will be 11 Euros.

There will be a grace period for fine payments after the new law comes into effect, so offenders will have until November 2012 to pay up.

The law is being introduced to encourage drinkers to breathalyse themselves before driving.

The French drink-driving limit is 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, which equates to a large beer or a glass of wine.

Motorists also face £108 on- the-spot fines for not carrying a luminous safety vest, a warning triangle, headlamp converters for driving on the right and a GB sticker or number plate with EU logo.

And since January, satnavs capable of detecting speed cameras were also banned in France.

Those caught can be fined £1,208, even if the device is not in use.

when you need support…
But I’ll try

I cannot promise to always
Know what you’re feeling
Or what will make you happy…
But I’ll always remember to ask

I cannot promise to always

know how to cheer you
when you’re down… But I’ll be there with a smile

I cannot promise to always understand
But I’ll always give my best

Though I cannot promise you many things
I can promise to be here for you today

Valuable

Everything is valuable only at 2 times:

1. Before getting it; and
2. After losing it !!

Two things bring happiness & success in life:
1. The way you MANAGE when you have nothing, and
2. The way you BEHAVE when you have everything !

Two places are MOST VALUABLE in the world:
1. The NICEST place is to be in someone’s Thoughts, and
2. The SAFEST place is to be in someone’s Prayers.

Lovely thoughts about life

A short walk is so difficult,
when no one walks with you.
But a long journey is just like few steps
when you walk with someone
who loves and cares for you.

We always look and care for the person
whom we love the most.
But we fail to look back at those
who love us the most.

Death’s not the greatest loss in life..
The greatest loss is when
relationships die inside us while
we are still alive…

Life is not about the people
who act true on your face..
Its about the people who
remain true behind your back..

Time decides whom you meet in life…
Your heart decides whom you want in life..
but your behaviour decides
who will stay in your life…

You can win life by all means..

Yes..

If you simply avoid two things…
1. Comparing – with others
2. Expecting – from other
Life will be more beautiful!!

Warning: Don’t shampoo in the shower

What an interpretation !!!

It’s so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!!!

Involves the shampoo when it runs down your body when you shower with it!!!!

Warning to us all!!!

Shampoo Warning!

I don’t know WHY I didn’t figure this out sooner!
I use shampoo in the shower!

When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning:
“For extra body and volume.”

No wonder I have been gaining weight!

*Well! I have gotten rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn dish soap instead.

Its label reads:
“Dissolves fat that is otherwise difficult to remove.”*

Dog Nap

This is one of the best emails I have received in a while!

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard.
I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.
He calmly came over to me; I gave him a few pats on his head.
He then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.
An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour.

This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar: ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

*The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar:

‘He lives in a home with non-stopping nagging wife, 6 children, and 2 under the age of 3 – he’s trying to catch up on his sleep.

Can I come with him as well tomorrow?*

*Treat People Like Cows

Zig Ziglar*

My dad died during the Great Depression when I was five. Six of us children were too young to work outside the home, but all of us did our part around the house. Our economic survival was built around five milk cows and a large garden. We sold the surplus milk and butter as well as many of the vegetables.

I was milking cows by the time I was eight years old and I can tell you from experience that cows don’t “give” milk—you have to fight for every drop! I can also tell you that the way you treat the cow has a direct bearing on the quantity and the quality of the milk she produces. If you beat her and treat her badly as you are preparing to milk her, two things will happen. She will give less milk and the milk might not be usable, because when she is angry and upset the milk she produces is often bitter and useless. In addition, she might retaliate and kick you. I’m not suggesting that you need to “kiss” the cow, but I am encouraging you to speak kindly to her and stroke her a time or two to let her know you appreciate her efforts. My mother loved her cows and expected her children to love them, too. As a result, we got maximum production from our cows which gave us an extra bonus. After keeping one for two or three years, we raised her milk production so much Mom could sell that cow for considerably more money than she paid for her. For us that was a big plus.

Here’s the message. Treat people kindly, gently, and with respect and consideration. They will respond favourably and if they happen to be on your payroll they will work harder and be more productive. On the other hand, if you abuse them, they will be unable to do their best. Think about it. Treat people like cows and I’ll see you at the top!

“Do not judge”

Everything in life holds both a blessing and a curse.

We deny this when we label the events of our lives as either good or bad.

The following old Zen story illustrates this lesson most effectively.

A farmer had a horse but one day, the horse ran away and so the farmer and his son had to plough their fields themselves.

Their neighbours said, “Oh, what bad luck that your horse ran away!”

But the farmer replied, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

The following week, the horse returned to the farm, bringing a herd of wild horses with him.

“What wonderful luck!” cried the neighbours, but the farmer responded, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

Then, the farmer’s son was thrown as he tried to ride one of the wild horses, and he broke his leg.

“Ah, such bad luck,” sympathized the neighbours.

Once again, the farmer responded, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

A short time later, the ruler of the country recruited all young men to join his army for battle.

The son, with his broken leg, was left at home.

“What good luck that your son was not forced into battle!” celebrated the neighbours.

And the farmer remarked, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

“Do not judge.”

Very inspiring and thought provoking.
Dog’s Purpose: from a child

(by my friend MT @ uk)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure as they felt that Shane might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him.
Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”
Startled, we all turned to him.
What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.
He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”
The Six-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them;
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride;
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy;
Take naps;
Stretch before rising;
Run, romp, and play daily;
Thrive on attention and let people touch you;
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do;
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass;
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree;
When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body;
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk;
Be loyal;
Never pretend to be something you’re not;
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it;
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently;

There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it.
You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good, so, love the people who treat you right.

Think good thoughts for the ones who don’t ~ life is too short to be anything but happy.

Falling down is part of LIFE
Getting back up is LIVING
DON’T COMPLAIN ABOUT GROWING OLD…
FEW PEOPLE GET THE PRIVILEGE!

The wife and the window

A young couple moves into a new neighbourhood.

The next morning, while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbour hang the wash outside.

‘That laundry is not very clean, she said, she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap.’

Her husband looked on, but remained silent.

Every time her neighbour would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:
“Look! She has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this.”

The husband said: “I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows!”

And so it is with life: "what we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look. Before we give any criticism, it might be a good idea to check our state of mind and ask ourselves if we are ready to see the good rather than to be looking for something in the person we are about to judge. I loved you a lot, but now what can I do? I can say only, “Sorry…for loving You.”
You did so much for me, and I did for you too, but now I feel, “Sorry…for loving you.”
I kept My Heart at your feet, but you threw it too, the I said in My Heart “Sorry…for loving you.”
Earlier, when in the morning I used to wake up, I used to think of you, but now when I wake up, I say, “Sorry…for loving you.”
The Pain you gave me, made me think why I loved You? And then my lips utters, “Sorry…for loving you.?
Don’t ever Come my way again, I don’t want to see you, because now I really feel, “Sorry…for loving you.
