Founded in February 2010, Snapdeal had initially started out as a daily deals platform, and gradually expanded in to a thriving online marketplace in India by September 2011. Kunal Bahl, a Wharton graduate and Rohit Bansal, an alumnus of IIT Delhi are the two people behind the birth and rapid growth of Snapdeal, which had swollen from a humble 30 member team to a 1,500 member strong organization in just a couple of years since its inception. According to Kunal Bahl, the main ingredient of Snapdeal’s speedy success has been its people. The company puts a lot of emphasis on the quality, focus and motivation of its employees, who are the driving force in any organization. Innovation, change, openness to new ideas, ownership of tasks taken up and unwavering honesty towards it are the core values that Snapdeal encourages and nurtures among its people.
As a result, today, the e-commerce store boasts of over 20,000,000 registered users (as of Feb 2013), claims to ship to more than 4000 towns and cities, and features around 4,000,000 products from over over 6000 brands across 500 plus categories.
Snapdeal.com received its first ever funding amounting to USD 12 million, within a year of its existence from Nexus Venture Partners and Indo-US Venture Partners, and since then there has been no looking back for this e-commerce store. The number of investors and the figure of investments just kept swelling with every round of funding Snapdeal received over the years with the very recent one being in October 2014, when Softbank became Snapdeal’s largest investor with investments worth USD 627 million.
Apart from funding, Snapdeal has also made a number of business acquisitions starting with Grabbon.com a Bangalore based group buying website in June 2010. Thereafter, Snapdeal acquired esportsbuy.com- an online sports goods retailer, Shopo.in- an online marketplace for Indian handicraft products, Doozton.com- a fashion products discovery site, Wishpicker.com- a gifting recommendation site, a stake in the popular price comparison site- Smartprix.com, and very recently, Snapdeal assimilated Exclusively.in, a luxury fashion products discovery site. All these acquisitions have helped Snapdeal in gaining access to and growing in new areas of the online arena.
Besides acquisitions, Snapdeal has also partnered with numerous businesses to tap and serve newer and wider markets online. Some of its noteworthy partnerships include the alliance with Rajasthan Small Industries Corp (RAJSICO) for online promotion and selling of the state’s traditional handicrafts, the collaboration with Hero Motocorp for selling Hero’s flagship scooter – Maestro, online, and the alliance with India Post to give an online platform to weavers and artisans of Varanasi to sell their products.
