Both Seagate and WD had similar success/failure rate based on my experience with external drives (w/ Toshiba it is much better*)

Among the mentioned drives, i would pick Seagate One touch with 3yrs data recovery (Much needed*) over the rest

Ok thanks a lot. Should we invest more and go for ssd. I know in 2tb hdd price we get 500gb ssd. Or harddrives are still ok with better transfer speeds with usb 3.0

Go for either WD or Seagate. I’m using Seagate since 2012, Toshiba since 2014 and WD 4TB since 2018. All the HDD are working fine till date without any single issue faced.

It depends.. Ext.SSDs* are useful w/ time-sensitive works
Personally, I’ve never seen SSDs as a replacement option for HDDs (External*). Even with my windows build, the OS drive is SSD but the other media drives are HDDs (except the cache one)
So, if the usage is limited to media consumption, then HDDs (USB 3.0*) are more than enough and VFM too. Yes, with SSDs we can transfer files 5x (/ more) faster vs HDDs (Source drive needs to be an SSD too*) , but there were only very few times when i felt the need for faster transfer speeds (a 50GB file can be transferred from SSD/HDD to USB 3.0 HDD in about 10min max* ?)

Ok this information helps.thanks. Hdd will suit the requirements I have then since mostly it will be one time backup once in few months so speed should not be an issue. I will go for Seagate options suggested.

I am not sure what “WD X TB External Hard Disk Drive with X TB Cloud Storage” means as answers/reviews are contradictory but if it really is like WD is giving same amount of cloud storage as free for lifetime/hdd warranty period then this is the best option. I would suggest seagate 4TB drives over WD 4TB drives(especially WD element 4TB/5TB models) as in my experience WD element models for more than 2TB capacity runs a bit hotter than usual.

@Mayavi I contacted WD India customer care & they denied having knowledge of any such cloud storage offer with WD My Passport drives & told to clarify it with flipkart support. Flipkart support have no idea about this & the support person took my query as feedback to pass on to retailnet seller but I am not expecting much from this. If cloud offer is confirmed then WD drive with same capacity cloud storage is the best option but if not then seagate drive with its 3 year data recovery feature is better. Also flipkart support said only replacement option is available & not refund for these products so in case cloud offer is not working you will be stuck with WD drive with no chance of refund & get seagate drive.

In case the mobile can’t provide enough power to drive 2TB or higher capacity drives like my Poco F1 you can also use a powered USB hub.

Never use more than 2TB portable hdd with mobile phone directly without using a powered usb hub like the one in below link(assuming hub connected with mobile power adapter of at least 18w 1.5a capacity to be on safe side in case of more than 1 hdd) unless you want to risk damaging your portable hdd/mobile phone port in the long run. Below hub uses micro-usb cable(the usual Boat cable which goes for 99 in the sale works fine with it) to connect to adapter & when adapter power is connected then it draws power both from device usb port as well as adapter.

My personal experience is that both WD and Seagate suck but Seagate sucks a bit lesser.

I had read that HGST laptop internal HD had the least failures. So I bought a internal HDD and put it inside a case. Even that conked very soon.

So nothing is consistent. its purely lottery. Also I heard for data recovery warranty we have to mail to the location mentioned by company. It could be in another city. So we have no control if they are making copies of our personal data for their own purpose.

Few hard lessons learnt after spending several 10000s for data recovery:
1) Always keep a copy of most important data across all HDD. Be sure to keep it inside one topmost folder. Sometimes datarecovery cost is less if you say “give me only this folder’s contents”

2) Also always make sure that u dont leave ur connecter plugged into HDD at all times, cos if the connector keeps moving inside a bag or some book is pressing it, the connector slot could become lose or corrupted.
3) Buy a fall proof case which protects the HDD from head damage
4) Never connect HDD directly to Samsung or other “Smart TVs” like that. They dont unmount the drive properly also they could short circuit the drive. Samsung TV spoiled my new HDD.
5) always try to unmount drives using the OS feature.

Well said, in addition you can buy 500gb SSD and store all your important data as backup which is more secure than HDDs. I have been using Toshiba 2TB HDD for more than 4 years without any issue till now even after it fell on ground from 4 feet. Recently bought 5TB Seagate only for movies. For optimal use, buy system with minimum 2 USB 3.0s with a USB type-c port to transfer data seamlessly over all types of devices.

Seems a reasonable precaution. I have a powered Orico USB hub. Took me a few tries to figure out the correct order!
Although I only ever connected the drives to my mobiles just to test them… The older Redmi devices had zero issues in powering 4TB drives whereas Poco F1 couldn’t power a 2TB drive even. With a USB Power Tester I checked just over 1A draw at first which quickly reduced and averaged 0.4-0.6A while transferring data to-and-fro.
