2. you can buy multiple gc denominations. Gc buying is not necessary. One can also use for LIC premium payments etc.. though best is to buy gc and use up for LIC, electricity bills etc in future

I read yesterday that free gold cards are being replaced with smart earn cards or charged 2k annual fee shortly.
I am using just 1 amex card from 10 years, to meet the milestones, with 5-6 cards it will be crazy 
those 5-6 cards are most likely 3 add on cards on 2 card variants, effectively making it 2 cards to be maintained.
And one variant can be free so long as another variant is maintained healthy. For example MRCC can be a free variant on Charge card membership
