I have two godrej split ACs purchased 16 years ago that is still working perfectly. It was never maintained, never serviced, and the outdoor unit was never even once cleaned because it was inaccessible easily. Yet it may have accumulated lot of dust due to construction nearby.
The Indoor dust filter cleaned only once in a year if I remember. So little care was given that, it was installed when no one who knew anything about airconditioner was there while installing it(only grandparents were there).
Yet, it still works with zero issues. ACs are a very long term purchase, so is it saving money if this thing fails after 5 years and you have to again spent 30K? Or dealing with the headache of repairing it? Or is it better to spent a bit more and have it work with no hassle for 20-30 years?
But yes, cheap ACs does make sense in some situations like if you live in an area near sea, or if you are on rent and constantly moving, or if you just want a temporary AC etc.

One 5 star 2020-2022 AC consumes over 4000 units yearly (12-14 hours a day for 7 months in north Indian heat). At 7.5 Re unit. It consumes energy of its price in a year.
If a more efficient model is available, I always change my home AC after 3 years.
Using old AC is like using 20-year-old Ambasador car that gives 8 KMPL average, where more efficient cars can provide 20+ KMPL. Especially when you need to run it for 14 hours a day for 7-8 months a year.
The reason I am already looking for upgrading my 4-year-old AC.
Somebody tell me a 2 ton ac for my room of 200 sq ft. I already have a lg 1.5 ton 5 star ac 2019 model. Cooling is very low during peak summers. Moreover there is some gel formation frequently.
hi10 wrote:Great to know! In my case those two ACs mentioned are barely used for 0 to 3 hours a day for about 4 months in Kerala summer. Just turning it on for an hour is enough to keep the room cool for next 4-5 hours with just fan as there is no sunlight exposed side and lot of trees nearby. So, for different use cases, the cost-benefit ratio changes. Ambassador is fine if you only travel once in a while.

Though, I am currently looking for another AC that is super-efficient for my room with work from home situation. So, I have sufficiently researched about it.
In your case, I think there is some issue if it is costing more than 1 unit per hour. Either your room is bigger than AC capacity, or there's a leak, or sun-directly falling on wall, or you are putting it at a very low temperature.
If you put it at 26degrees, it will cost you just 3 units for 14 hours for a 1.5ton AC in a 160sqft room. Thus total of around 650 units instead of 4000.
Anyways, if you are planning to upgrade, after my extremely thorough research, I have found that the most efficient option available online is Samsung 1.5ton 5star if your room is 150-200sqft. And LG 1ton 5star if your room is less than 100 sqft with less heat creation.
spprasanna_1986 wrote:2 ton is not often needed. There is often very little difference between an AC marketed as 1.5ton and 2 ton in our market. Most 2 ton ACs are 1.8ton actually.Though there are some genuine 2 ton ACs.Somebody tell me a 2 ton ac for my room of 200 sq ft. I already have a lg 1.5 ton 5 star ac 2019 model. If cooling is that much noticeably low, then there must be some technical issue with the AC. Get it serviced. Maybe it require a refill of refrigerant.
Are you sure you are not running it at "40%" mode or any such convertible mode accidently? I had seen that happen to one guy who had low cooling and he said his temperature setting was 40 when I realized this must be the problem.
Other than that, avoid sunlight directly falling on your walls and heating it up. Use reflective paint or Trees or whatever to create shade.
Keep your outdoor unit in shade.
Clean your indoor and outdoor unit regularly. If either gets dusty, cooling decreases.
Clean the dust filters regularly.
Seal any holes in your room where hot outside air can come in.

Here a high temperature can stay above 40-45 degree for at-least 3-4 months. For Other 3-4 months, say July to Oct too, it stays above 35.
No, I don't keep very low temperature. I keep between 25 to 27 Only. And the room size is 140 to 160 feet. But yet every AC consumes 15-22 units depending on day temperature
Just after this post I ordered Flipkart 5 Star AC. After Bank discount and no cost EMI discount it cost me 29602/-. Plus 1000/- promised GV from Flipkart + 829 Promised cashback from a cashback website. + 5% promised cashback (1480) on my hdfc dinner millennia card.

I have bad experience with LG. One of my 2018 LG ac condensers leaked in 17 months. That was inverter 3 star model purchased for 31000.
In April 2020 lockdown, I had to call a local mechanic to fix it, as LG was not working. Despite spending 8000/- on condenser replacement and gas filling many times, it did not work well. And it was consuming over 30 units a day.
I changed it in August 2020.
Once I have a bad experience with a brand, I never buy it.
The lesson I learnt, buy extended warranty with every purchase

It is showing 33999 for me, and max discount from banks seems to be 2000, so, it would reduce to 32k right. Which offer you used?
Now showing 2000/-. When I ordered it was showing 3000/- discount with my HDFC card

I am planning to buy Samsung 1.5 ton 5 star AC with Wifi when it reduces in price with some offer. It has more features, and has big outdoor unit which I assume will last long, and also reduce energy cost.
Godrej 5 star is there at about 5k lesser cost. But there are not enough specification details about it on their website to make a proper decision. My point is not about Godrej being great, I feel most ACs last this long?
I don't know why or how you are having frequent gas leaks. Is the distance between your indoor and outdoor unit too far? At what component is it leaking?
Technologically looking at an AC, only the PCB has a weakness with a probability of failure. I would have added compressor too, but they have 10year warranty thus even manufacturers are confident it wont fail.
Is your AC having vibrations that is causing it to move the pipes constantly and thus eventually leading it to break? Is there corrosion or due to bad metal joints? Or due to poor installations?
