speeds reduct when the drive gets too hot
1+ year back I brought this I noticed this case. Only empty drive shows the advertised speeds, once it fills up, it will show very less. As soon as I noticed this, I hardly tried and returned and next I spent little more and I brought Western Digital SN 850, this is too good
My System:
i5 11400F
GTX 1080Ti
SN 850
DDR4 4000
I think this is the lowest so far
This is very underwhelming M2 SSD. I was using a SATA SSD earlier and found the boot times comparable. Performance is slightly different, and it runs hot even with a heatsink installed. 43C is idling temperature. Under loads, it goes to ~63C.
Benchmarks do tell me that it has 2700MB/s read speed. But real-world performance is almost comparable unless you aren't gaming and deriving pleasure from a 2-second difference in initial load times. And the health has degraded to 98% in one year with 13TB written on the disk so far. Very mixed feedback I have for this model.
One year 2%, not bad. Considering you have 13 Tb. Even if that was 5% in a year - buy the time it is 5 years you still have 75% health. You usually replace a laptop in 7 Yrs or so.
Mine "SAMSUNG MZVLB512HAJQ-000L7 512.1 GB" - hold upto 70Degs, latter throttels and stays at 60+ till data transfer is in progress. It usually stays between 35-45 ideling. Photoshop timelaps takes it to 50 Degs but I love the way the timelaps of 800 images complete well under 60Sec. I feel my money worth there.
Heat Sink does help a bit in laptops but helps a lot in desktops since it will be bigger in size and a lot of room for air.
I remember using an industrial grade Samsung SSD back in 2017 - It gave a stagerring 2200 mbps+ write speedd while data transfers (from SATA disks to nvme). We were trying to move backup files of about 2 Tb. Little did we know that time that temperature affects performance.
Speeds will significantly reduce once the used space reach more than 50%, and there after worsening speed continues further as the occupied space gets more.
WD SN850 is better than 980 and 980 pro
