I would like to understand this a little better. What happens if I don't receive updates? Does my phone become unusable?
It would be very rare that you'd receive any ground breaking feature in the next Android version update anyhow, right?
This deal on M34 is a better one, in my opinion -

Comparisons -
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=...
- The positives that the A34 has going for it are the IP67 dust/water resistance rating, Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and a chipset that is a tad faster and a camera set-up that is arguably better.
- The positives for the M34 are the in-house Samsung Exynos chipset that on a 5nm process which has better power efficiency (compared to the 6nm process Mediatek on A34), the 6000 mAh battery (compared to the 5000 mAh on A34)
- Another key difference is the side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the M34 (my preferred type and location) compared to the optical under display one on A34.

In many corporates too the security patches need to be relatively recent (not older than 6 months) to be able to use your phone to access company VPN, email and authentication software. The S20 FE, while having fantastic hardware that is miles ahead of the A34, is on its last OS (Android 13) will stop getting security updates next year, or in 2025 if Samsung gets generous for some reason.I would like to understand this a little better. If the above is not an issue for you, by all means close your eyes and get the S20 FE during the sales since it is sure to go down to near 20k. It has gone there before too.
Consumer apps like Google Search, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and such continue to work with very old Android OSes and don't bother about security updates.

Updates maintain the hardware without it, phone runs slower with full of bugs and security looholes.

You can still get latest features and security updates even after the end of official Samsung support for S20 FE by flashing custom ROMs which has it's own benefits and few drawbacks.Do the due diligence before taking a leap.
Nope, it won't become unusable. As @dexter_greycells has already mentioned main concerns are security patches and OS updates (some apps/ features require latest OS).Besides that you get better exchange value for your device if it's eligibile for future software updates.
