Too late for this for so-called Data Protection 
it was deemed as indian SSN during launch time. Now its another “pos” along with ration card, pan, voter id and passport. Lot of hurdles to get but never stand as unique identity by itself with security.
Govt. Schemes linked biometric of aadhar and when biometric is not recgnized it is another fight to get resolved.
in villages, atleast 20% struggle to get ration as their biometric linked to aadhar dont work. (Offtopic but yeah thats how india is )

Only those organizations that have obtained a User License from the UIDAI can use Aadhaar for establishing the identity of a person. Unlicensed private entities like hotels or film halls are not permitted to collect or keep copies of Aadhaar card. It is an offence under the Aadhaar Act 2016. If a private entity demands to see your Aadhaar card, or seeks a photocopy of your Aadhaar card, please verify that they have valid User License from the UIDAI.
Interestingly the licensed large firms were the sources for the alleged data leaks (Aadhaar – related) in the past. They had this act from 2016 but no one knew about it and the govt was only interested in chest thumping (trying to showcase Aadhaar as most safest thing in the country), all they wanted is One-document for everything and one big disadvantage here is, we couldn’t apply for a lot of things without having an Aadhaar card because everyone started asking for it and people were happy to share it even to the strangers under road-side tents for sim cards (Advantage for them, if they wanna target someone the only thing they need is just to disable their Aadhaar card). Even the banks started insisting for Aadhaar (SAs and Creditcards) when its not even a mandatory requirement and they’re still doing it
Edit: Mobikwik too leaked 10cr user kyc data which includes phone numbers, addresses, photo copies of Aadhaar and PAN and its been over an year since this happened and still zero action on mobikwik or the RBI entity that does yearly security audits of these wallets

Refused RBL bank card with 1 lakh limit as their agent wanted me to enter original 12 digit aadhaar no. instead of entering 16 digit virtual aadhaar no. in his biomeric machine.
Refused Indusind bank card because their agent wanted to do aadhaar ekyc.
Refused Yes Bank card for the same reason.
Refused to do aadhaar ekyc for axis card instead opened bank acc but 3 applications rejected out of which one time the verification agent told me that rarely ppl without aadhaar ekyc get axis flipkart card.
SBI credit card agents kept calling me for 3 months to do aadhaar ekyc/digilocker authentication via aadhaar otp & refused. Finally started getting calls from their kyc dept of their Head Office in Gurgaon. Eventually they did it via CKYC for which I just needed to send a simple sms from my card linked mobile no(different from aadhaar linked mobile no.).
Refused to do aadhaar ekyc for upgrading my idfc onecard to federal bank onecard despite getting 1000 cb offer.
Opened 25k mab acc offline in ujjivan bank because they refused to open normal acc(5k mab variant) without aadhaar even offline.
Initially refused acc opening in Equitas bank offline because of no aadhaar, eventually the BM was a logical person & opened the acc offline without aadhaar.
Even more than privacy it is an “honesty issue”. Aadhaar biometric is almost full proof with no forgery possible(leaving aside those rubber thumb prints in very specific fraud scenarios) so banks/credit card insist on it to reduce their risk but here is the thing. If a bank does not doubt your voter ID/DL then it has no reason to ask for aadhaar in the first place because that is the whole point of asking aadhaar(easily forged DL & voter ID in India). If a bank doubts your honesty even before you become their customer then why should you become their customer in the first place.

They should allow Virtual Aadhaar No. Instead of Aadhaar.
How can adhaar be misued particularly when sharing non maksed adhar?
how does a masked adhaar prevent such misuse?
if a masked adhaar prevents misuse at the same time it can be accepted by hotels. How does it prevent misuse? I mean a fraudster still can use maksed adhar for his malicious intentions ?

So much spoken about fraud, linking etc. The bottom line is every system can be hacked including the most secred( if we think so) SSN. I know my friends cases where their SSN got completely cloned. Everyday in and out SSN fraud is reported. So i can understand how indian can secure their aadhar unless some indian has invented some security systems not known to world.
i realized there are two options
1. Live without fear but be cautious.
2. Fear for every fraud that had not happened live a restricted life.
mosad,kgb,cia and others least bothered except chinese.

No convincing them, like my thread regarding sbi card not recognizing my 1 lakh spend for annual fee reversal but another part of sbi card system recognizing it & gave cleatrip 2k gv as milestone benefit, same thing happening here. One part of sbi card system supposedly did something via ckyc while other part is unaware & agents still calling me to get my aadhaar biometric kyc done which I always refuse. Card is still working.
