Hi guys, I was trying to get a new broadband connection of Airtel but after KYC agent shows there is an existing broadband connection(which is inactive) on my name with some amount due which must be cleared before initiating new connection.

I told him I have never taken any broadband connection on my name, he is clue less.

Customer care says, they do not have much information as who has taken the connection, blah, blah,..

Mailed them but they are not giving proper reply.

Is it some kind of scam?

Can anyone take Airtel broadband connection on any other perosn's name/ID card? If yes, what is purpose of KYC?

do you guys know/ aware of such malpractices?

Please share your experience, what to do now, as it is a matter of grave concern, tomorrow someone can take a broadband connection on other's name and do illegal activities on internet.

P.S.- To be on safe side, I have registered an e-FIR.

The rules are very lenient, its easy to take SIMs and broadband connection on anyone's ID card but address should have been same. Not sure how someone took at a different address , have you moved locations in last 10 years and updated your ID cards?

Airtel higher authority would be having the due account details, contact them with the fir.

I have recently(few months) moved to a new city and stayed at some places(some hospitality service like hotel, some airbnb stay) where I had to share my ID card.

They may have done it but I have stayed at multiple places(3) so cannot pin point who may have mis-used the ID card.

Talked to another airtel agent, I have told him the issue and he was like koi baat nhi kisi aur ka ID de do, I mean what the hell, can you give connection to anyone one other's ID card?

Take connection in any family members name.

that can be done but internet is not the problem here but the unauthorised connection is.

this thing cannot be ignored, this is a serious problem in a world where cyber crime is prevalent.

People take the government given subsidy by forging details.
U.S.A. themselves confirmed that they might have 'mistakenly' transferred in excess of USD $239 million to the Afghanistan government/ Taliban (which they did not intend to).

So what is so surprising in family members or anyone in possession of the KYC document's copy or the OTPs to misuse it.

Random people walking into RTO premises to the person who gave you the new SIM card in offer to the disgruntled backoffice person at your bank or the health insurance TPA to this to that.. ALL have enough documents for identity theft.

Legally (and even illegally) Bharti Airtel can easily make you keep begging to them on your knees.. without providing location or records of that alleged account.

But if you file a cybercrime complaint and keep visiting or talking to the investigating officer or the branch

or file a case in the consumer forum to get the relevant Airtel area manager to touch your feet and apologise and the company to donate hundred thousand to an orphanage or old age home.. (compensation)..

then perhaps they will budge and the facts will be out.
(If area manager has changed then do not have to file the compensation claiming asking the new person to touch your feet. In that case just try to make the judge approve that they give written idemnity against future misuse and they donate two hundred thousand to a place with less than 25% administrative expenses.

If the case progresses in cybercrime or in consumer forum.. gradually give its details to conventional newswires/media outlets and to online current affairs sites/ channels/ content creators.. besides shaming the company on social media.
