Amazon omits India business in earnings, a first in years

Amazon omitted any reference to India in Thursday’s earnings call and release, a notable change for the e-commerce giant that has consistently highlighted rapid growth and bullish outlook in the South Asian market.

The absence of India in the Q1 2023 quarterly earnings and investor call, the first since early 2014, follows Amazon’s shutdown of multiple services, including food delivery and wholesale distribution, in the country, prompting many analysts to wonder if the American giant is scaling back operations in the country amid global restructuring.

Amazon has poured over $7 billion into its India operations over the last decade and competes aggressively with Walmart-backed Flipkart. Amazon is lagging Flipkart and struggling to make inroads in smaller Indian cities and towns, according to a report by Sanford C. Bernstein.

Its global rival Walmart, in contrast, is doubling down on India and has spent close to $2.5 billion in the country this year alone.

Unsure if there is something to read between the lines from the earnings call or not but this seems to be interesting.

Bezos owns the washington post newspaper which the current government does not like. He asked time to meet modi during his last India visit but he was not given any time. Idiot miniters like goyal due to pressure from association of offline shops speak so much venom against ecommerce websites but they forget about fk and go after amazon only, walmart pays huge money for their offline stores to directly to some states btw. They are not getting approvals to launch many things. Shutting down cloudtail etc.whom did it help? Only the associations which they need for votes. And lastly some misusers here are next level. @Snapz @Ash-D

Edit- They were planning to launch Amazon air I think in 16 or 18 but the plan was scrapped due to some draconian laws. Ultimately whom it would have helped?

Most of the people in smaller cities prefer Flipkart, may be their ui plus most of them still believe Flipkart is an Indian company

With shopsy Flipkart has penetrated to the 3rd tier cities

Amazon stopped Amazon Fresh services in most tier 2 and tier 3 towns.

India mein Ambani ji Amazon ko jeene nahi denge. 😅

Amazon fresh is completely dependent on More supermarket now .

And their stores in smaller cities are either very less or not capable of handling the load . The delivery diameter has also decreased significantly.

Idk why even though I have no bias I still prefer Flipkart over Amazon most of the times. Unless the price is better on Amazon.

And Amazon air launched in January 23.

Only from online shopping POV, Flipkart has an inferior UI in my opinion . There are so many small sellers selling the same item , mostly in case of unbranded products .

I can't select good sellers like retailnet directly , need to manually look for each and every product. Returns are a pain with Flipkart ,Amazon has also changed a bit on this aspect but still better

Flipkart has done well with the supercoin ecosystem to gather attention though

Amazon is loosing in most aspects.

In electronics - fk is far ahead -

In grocery - jiomart and big basket way ahead.

Amazon subsidiary MORE now launched its own app with free delivery. So fresh need to to phased out.

In fashion and accessories - Amazon is way behind others.

Payment platform not able to penetrate lot.

Amazon is way better than Flipkart in customer care service.

Amazon and Flipkart both need some improvements in strategies with the Indian market. Offline association protests are common in most of the countries they operate. But at the end, customer satisfaction and demand matters. If demand is not there or people prefer other stores , why would anyone expand its operations??But still in current market, amazon is better in customer service and Flipkart is better in marketing and electronics category

Amazon stopped delivering grocery in my city but Flipkart started. Fine with me but I always preferred Amazon over Flipkart because of better return policy but now my whole online shopping shifted from Amazon to Flipkart. Now even if price is same in Amazon and Flipkart, I go with Flipkart because of supecoins. I also like Flipkart plus concept.

QuickJet's AOC renewal

https://www.stattimes.com/air-cargo/quikjet-air...

"Bengaluru-based cargo airline Quikjet Airlines has returned to the skies after it obtained a new Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Indian civil aviation regulator. The cargo carrier, with two converted Boeing 737-800 freighters (B737-800BCF and B737-800BDSF), has been operating for the eCommerce giant Amazon in India connecting Hyderabad with Delhi and Bengaluru. The cargo airline is expected to start Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi sectors shortly."

Our current government is blatantly and often very aggressively Anti-Amazon. Could be due to pressure from vote bank, could be due to lobbying by likes of Ambani or Tatas, I am not sure. Personally I would like to see Amazon succed in India, because they are ubiquitous, operates in massive scale and more customer centric than anyone. Indian retail giants are not going to focus on smaller cities because they know it will be loss making business for them due to lesser volume (only very few people have the purchasing power there). Will Jiomart or Big Basket service be available there? I don't think so. Politicians flights for their own gain, consumer loses at the end.

You want a foreign company to succeed but not any Indian company.  For your info Amazon is listed at NYSE and Indian companies are listed at NSE & BSE.

No private company works for charity. Wherever they see opportunity, they try to capture that market. So keep your illogical argument inside your pocket.

Please care to give some reasons for the hatred. If few companies are working in the same field. Why they hate only few?

What crony capitalism practises these companies do and their counterpart companies like Amazon do not ?

And where did I told anything against Amazon?

How come you came to the conclusion that I hate foreign company? Is asking for a fair comparison is hate?

Some people in this thread is so misguided and jingoistic that they fail to realise the simple point that as a consumer I want the best value for my money and better service in that process irrespective of who provides that and I want them to be successful.

Don't know what happened to our country, so many people have become armchair nationalist.

Finance Mentor Finance Mentor

What is armchair nationalism?

Nationalism is not negotiation or sale.

I will pay one rupee more is I have choice to select between Indian or videshi company which is giving me at one rupee less..

First preference is always Indian company and Indian brand. Videshi company is alway be at 2nd place and choice.

India is for Indian. Nothing less than that acceptable,

Stops listening to bullshit and read more books and history. Maybe on business. Also if you love India, make your country proud. Don't be proud of your country which leads to hatred for others, accept its flaws and be someone who makes your country proud. I know India is a poor, underdeveloped country with extremely bad living condition (and nowhere near a superpower or anything) but I love it none the less. Loving India is not equal to loving Viswaguru/big brother/rulling government/Reliance/Tata etc etc.

It is really difficult to find stuffs in Amazon, very cluttered..
Flipkart comparatively is more organized.
However for Business users Amazon is more GST friendly..

It's sad to see where this country is going. All this misplaced nationalism talk sounds like people want India to be the next china. The reason India even developed this much is thanks to globalization. Make it hard to do business in the country and all foreign investment stops. There goes all jobs. And if you think even for one second that the Indian businessman really care about India and the people of India, you need to give you head a wobble. The one and only thing they care about is money. Kill competition, be it foreign or local, prices will increase if it becomes a monopoly.

Deal Cadet Deal Cadet

So Indian businessman don't care about India but Jeff Bezos does. Is this what you mean?

Our argument is Keep both Indian & as well as foreign companies in the same category. But few people think Indian companies are crony capitalists and Amazon is their saviour. Amazon is doing loss making business to take care of Indian people.

If you consider Reliance, Adani, Tata as  crony capitalists, then put Amazon in the same category too.

Why is it that hard to understand?

Flipkart grocery reached my village which is tier 4. Whereas Amazon is lagging in this department. Soon Amazon will leave small cities and will focus on tier 1 and 2 cities. They can't compete with Flipkart.
