Hi dimers ,

I have been out of touch with mobile phone tech for a while now . I’m planning to replace my phone ( honor 7x) during upcoming Amazon/FK sale now. I have set aside a budget of 15k for the phone. Main priorities are decent battery life, Camera , screen and music quality through earphones. I don’t play games on my phone. After some research I have shortlisted below phones .

1) Poco F1 : Best bang for the buck. 128 GB with 6gb ram and a flagship processor for under 14 k seems like a great deal.

2) Redmi note 8 pro : Newest of the lot . Seems like a phone targeted mainly towards gaming auidience .

3) Samsung M30s: I’m in love with the screen on this one .That mammoth battery is an added plus . But most reviews are hating the camera on this one ? Is it that bad ?

4) Realme XT/ X2/5 pro : I have never used a Realme device . reviews seems to be decent .

5) Redmi note 7 pro; Cheapest of the lot but probably the best camera phone. But is it still worth it ?

Feel free to chip in with any other device suggestions .

if you ARE okay with Samsung,
can think of the A series (A10 A20 30 40 50).
although i don’t know how the battery of M30 pares with those.
camera is okay okay on the A30 and A50 I checked under low light.

if it is for self and you aren’t into changing devices often, might as well tweak the budget a little and take a IP68 or IP69k rated device (from India or China/abroad).
with some insurance and service support, these might be fine devices.
i remember having seen some Nomu50 like Elephone/Ulefone for under 19000 on main (Intl.) banggood site last year https://www.banggood.in/buy/ip68-phon...ml
.
not just about water resistance, but about drop and dents won’t easily damage the screen.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. Looks like every device has some or the other compromises. Samsung M30s seems like the perfect device except for the poor camera quality. If anyone has got a chance to use M30s, how bad is the camera ? People were critical of Honor 7x camera. I found it okay .

Check Nokia 8.1 or Zenfone 5z. Using Nokia 8.1 and it’s amazing.

Poco f1 specs are wonderful but I’m a sucker for quality displays be it TV’s or phones.i travel a lot and watch a lot of videos and movies on phone hence the need of good battery life , screen and music quality.

Disclaimer: I own a Poco F1 ( for the past 3.5 months ) so my views might be biased.
I don’t understand what’s the issue with display quality other than the fact it’s an LCD when OLED is the norm. Unless folks confuse the touch issues that plagued its lauch with the display itself. Or the screen bleeding which is minimal and isn’t noticeable in day-to-day usage.
As per Gsmarena review its pretty good by LCD standards. 460 nits peak brightness (OLED with HBM enabled can hit 600-800 nits but in flagship products mostly ) still legible under direct sunlight, 2.5 nits min. brightness, 100% sRGB coverage and 1500:1 contrast ratio. Not too long ago were the specs of the LCDs used in flagship devices. Nothing to complain about viewing angles, colour calibration. Its HDR compliant as well. Widevine L1 certified.
For watching videos outdoors obviously OLED is the preferred solution. But HBM needs to be enabled (Google didn’t in this year’s Pixel lineup! )
Battery backup is very good. SoT
( estimates) range from 12-16 hours. In the same usage RN3 delivered 8-9 hours.
Speaker can pump out satisfactory volumes with little distortion. Audio output through the headphones jack is pretty good(Android Authority? compared it with the class-leading LG V20 and Poco was only a tad behind ). Clean and loud. Although won’t suffice for really high impedance cans (250 ohms and above but those are outrageously expensive ).
SD845 can handle pretty much any current game with plenty of room to spare. Though in custom ROMs one will need to flash standalone thermals. A75+UFS 2.1 combine to deliver a super snappy experience all the time.
Same sensor as Pixel 3. Install a GCam mod and it can take very good images.
Plenty of custom ROM development. Stable Android 10 ROMs have been available for quite a while. Official 10 update is expected as well as the kernel source code for 10 was released a little while ago. Bootloader unlocking is quick ( and doesn’t void the warranty ) . It was instantaneous in my case.
Major potential con is related to touch. But the later revisions of the FTS and NVT digitizers don’t have this issue as long as the firmware is updated. I was apprehensive initially but I figured Amazon could be relied upon in case any problem arose. So I took the punt and fortunately no issues at all.
In Telegram groups I haven’t come across a single recent buyer who had issues with touch. One with screen bleed though. But again it was very little and in any case the replacement went well.

So here is the update. After some deliberation, ended up buying Samsung M30s. Phone was delivered this morning. I had very less expectations from the Camera thanks to many youtubers claiming the cam to be worthless. Surprisingly the pictures turned out to be quite good and sharp. Daytime pictures turned out to be almost as good as my Canon DSLR. Pictures taken under artificial lighting was acceptable, much better than my previous phone(Honor 7x). Im still shocked why a whole bunch of youtubers were ranting about the cam on this phone.

In terms of peformance , M30s gets the job done . For day to day tasks its quite okay. Performance levels were similar to Honor 7x although benchmark says m30s is twice as powerful as 7×. I didnt feel any difference between the two.

Screen on this this is shockingly good for the price. Battery life is great. Sound quality thorough earphones is great thanks to dolby atmos.

Coming to negatives , build quality is nothing much to write about. I felt MI and Huwaie phones are much better built. Touchscreen on this phone isnt that great.

If you are not much into gaming and need a phone under 15k, buy 30s eyes closed . For gamers Poco f1 and Redmi note 8 pro is a better option.

Your experience is with Honor 7X which had one of the worst cameras ever put on a 10-15k phone in the last couple of years. So, you might be fine with M30s camera quality. There are better options available. But compared to even 4-5 years ago, there shouldn’t be much dissatisfaction with any 10k+ mobile cameras.
Anyway congrats. M30s screen is awesome.
