My review of Apple MacBook Pro with M1 chip

MacBook Pro with M1 chip in the house.

Damage on wallet: Rs. 97,000 in recent Flipkart deal (MRP 1,23,000)

Ever since I completed my formal education, my computing needs were never too high end I always have been settling down with base versions of macbook pro in 2010 and air since 2011. Fast forward several years and my requirements changed. I have been looking for a capable mac and when Apple launched the M1 series I was quite compelled to give it a try

Most of my comparisons would be with respect to my mid 2016 macbook air which was my previous machine.

Display - Lot higher resolution, crisp, less reflective, wider colour gamut and thinner bezels. All in all, the display on my current macbook pro seems to be an upgrade over my older macbook air in every possible way. It’s a delight to use the macbook all day long.

Keyboard - one of the other primary factor. The very recent macbook had a notoriously failing butterfly keyboards which received lot of criticism over the years. Apple finally ditched the butterfly keyboard and launched something called magic keyboard. Compared to my macbook air, the travel of keys isn’t as deep but the click response is so much better and I am somehow able to type much faster. Love the new keyboard too and got accustomed to it in no time.

Trackpad - one of the other major advantage I see with macbook is the accurate and lot more usable trackpad. Though a basic means of interaction in a laptop, I see most laptops falter as compared to what a macbook offers. The one macbook pro has almost twice the area of macbook air but the one thing I dislike is the hollow sound I get when I move my finger on the trackpad. Also, it’s a bit too huge for comfort as I am unable to find a proper resting position for my hands.

Sound - I personally find macbooks to have one of the best sound systems again. The ones on macbook pro are lot fuller and deeper. Much better than the ones on macbook air again.

Hinge - not many talk about it. The hinge on macbook air was reliable too but I feel the one on macbook pro is lot more robust and better holding. I liked the more smooth movement of hinge on macbook air but the one on pro is more robust.

Speed - blown away. Apart from being a benchmark monster beating even the top of the line intel chips based macbook pros, the m1 does show in real time performance too. I haven’t seen it sweat irrespective of what I throw at it. Any app opens super quick. I am especially able to notice a huge improvement in implementation times of the code I run.

Heating - my old macbook air used to heat only when I charge and in the area around the charging port, but for that I never really faced much heating issues unless I run some demanding algorithms which I code. This M1 macbook pro seems to have resolved all those issues too. As far as I have been using it for several days now I haven’t seen it heat up neither while charging nor while running the algos. A hue thumbs up for thermal management.

Battery life - blown away! Again, I find macbooks in general have lot longer battery life than their windows counterparts and the M1 series blows the competition out to next level. My macbook pro easily last 17 hours + on real time usage with a mix of videos, songs, programming and office apps. Crazy good battery life!

Weight and form - One thing I was worried about is the portability factor moving from air to pro but apple has refined the pro series so well that they are as sleek as an air now. My old macbook air weighed 1.34 kgs whereas the new pro weighs just 1.4 kgs. Also, air has a wedge design where the thickest part is thicker than the current pro. The new pro has a smaller footprint too overall so I feel it’s easier to handle my macbook pro than my previous air.

TouchBar - meh! I didn’t really find it of much use. It feels more of a fancy feature as of now and also leads to lot of accidental touches when I use the numbers on keyboard.

App compatibility - most apps that are not customised for M1 chip still run really well using rosetta compatibility so no issues here either.

Ports - One and only major drawback. I miss the USB-A ports and SD card reader on macbook air. The macbook air itself has been criticised a lot for going minimal on ports but the macbook pro seems to have went even more minimal and all it has is 2 usb-c ports and one 3.5mm jack. I have to invest more on dongles and carry them around when in need. A big thumbs down here.

Tip: I suggest the base version of macbook air instead if anyone is keen. The only difference as compared to pro is the GPU on base version of macbook air is 7 core as opposed to 8 core on pro. Air battery life is 1 to 2 hours lesser. Air lacks a fan ventilation system but most users say even when air is pushed to max it still doesn’t heat up. Air lacks touch bar, which again I feel is quite pointless.

Overall, for what it’s worth, I find it to be one of the best gadgets I invested in recent times. Totally recommend it for anyone considering it.

I would prefer ARM compatible CPUs replacing their x86 counterparts in ultra portable systems but no such desire in the desktop space.

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

As this is their first ARM based CPU, I am sure the future M series processors would be lot more capable and let them come up with even better iMacs than the current M1 based iMac.

This will be the 256gb version right?
Although i haven’t used mac much, what about ssd upgrades (support for it)?
And is 8gb ram sufficient for all programming tasks?

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Apple charges extortionately for upgrades. I remember a few years $500 for an extra 16GB RAM.

Just when Windows based laptops had caught upto and even exceeded Apple notebooks in battery life, Apple came up with a left field move. It will take Windows OEMs a few years to even come close.

Thanks

I have decided to go for M1 pro..

I am getting around 1000$ and frnd suppose to travel back to india from US in July..

$1000 + taxes I suppose? It still is a good deal. If budget permits, I suggest getting 16gb RAM. MacBooks last really long, easily 7 years or more and all it might need is a battery replacement. With storage, you can at least use an external SSD if needed but RAM is something you have to live with without any scope of upgrade.

Nice and to the point review.

Been using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) for 5-6 years, never felt to get back on windows, in fact I do have a win desktop at home.. always hate that thing.

Btw, do you know this old boy has 2 usb ports, sd card slot & no touch bar. All the drawbacks you wrote in your review were not in this model wink.
It’s blazingly fast (ssd), on latest MacOS Big Sur and still is as good as new.

Now if something happens to this device, my only hope is probably getting the same device which you reviewed.

Don’t you think people compare windows and Mac unfairly? People compare a 80-90K Mac laptop with a average 40-50k windows laptop.

How did you get that deal price @raghupro ?
Any special offer?

Flipkart had some loop hole that lasted for a while and I could bag one during that time. I could have got it 1k cheaper if I had a HDFC card but didn’t have one ready then so used an ICICI card.

Been a windows user myself since the beginning, but have a Macbook Air at home that my fanatic younger brother uses.. Currently I’m working on an Asus Vivobook S series, which I bought last June/July – and I’m still loving it – and satisfied preferring over it over a Mac. No doubt, battery life is better on Macs, graphics & responses are better, however on a 50K Asus I am not feeling a lag at all, I almost have 20-30 tabs on Chrome, 8-9 on Firefox, 1-2 on Edge + 2-3 Excel sheets open all the time, and in rarest instance I feel a lag.

Config I’m currently on: I5 8th/8G/256GB SSD + 1TB HDD/14" – 1.4kg.
lasts fairly an entire day of office hour usage, good slim built, slim bezels. Only lags on WebCam which is way better in Apple, but then the price difference?

You need to check the webcams of new macs, these are the most terrible ones I used till date. biggrin

My old MacBook air’s webcam was way better than my current macbook pro’s webcam.

Nice review. Well explained.

Pro at 97k is an awesome deal. I got Air M1 with student discount from Apple store.

I think pro base variant will cost is 1,06,000 after student discount. You’ve got better deal than what students gets from Apple website. 😂

Just a random lucky instance that worked.

I would have opted for air without second thoughts if not for this deal. Moreover, by the time I reacted air went out of stock on Flipkart that day.

Great Review!!

What would you suggest for a windows user since inception .. A Macbook air or a pro?

Main utility is general work and a stylish looking laptop

Had a few basic doubts
1) Do torrents work in Mac .. hopefully we don’t have to pay for each software?
2) What all ports will I miss when switching to an apple
3) Can I install windows in it as a dual setup — I have seen it is possible.. but are there any speed issues .. the main reason I want to install windows is due to having an android phone and largely comfortability with windows as of now.. that will change eventually.

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Air would suffice

Yes, torrents do work
All the new macs have is 2 usb-c ports so you need to get expansion or conversion dongles accordingly. A good branded usb-c to a converter costs below 300 bucks and usb-c to hdmi costs 1300 or so.
Yes, dual boot is supported but shall kill the very purpose of getting a macbook. If windows is something you can’t live without then avoid mac.

Isn’t 8GB RAM a limitation on pro for pro users!
And that’s not upgrade-able later?

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Can’t upgrade later. Yup, 16gb preferably is better but 8gb isn’t all bad. One has to spend 20k more to upgrade from 8gb to 16gb

@raghupro is Air sufficient if video tasks/video editing not to be done.
Although i understand with pro we would get more power/bit heavier, but still ?
Main tasks – Programming, maybe data intensive in future (analytics), video edit very rarely. Rest all YouTube/chrome/videos

Benevolent Benevolent
Link Copied

Very little difference between both. I personally suggest settling down with Air.
