My father had an account with Syndicate Bank which is now Canara Bank. Since coming under Canara Bank, we started seeing charges being levied – previously he had SMS alerts disabled but now with alerts coming, charges also started appearing. He was quite unhappy with the charges given the fact that SMS alerts were far and few due to less transactions but charges were ₹18/quarter including taxes. So I set to find a way out and today discovered Canara Jeevandhara – SB Account for Senior Citizens which in addition to free SMS alerts offers free debit card (might be Rupay) with person’s photo and name. Only two free remittances are shown to be free under NEFT/RTGS but IMPS is reportedly free.
For non-senior citizens, there is Canara SB Power Plus – requires ₹1 lakh AQB though, free photo Platinum debit card, SMS, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS free.

I have my fathers account in canara bank
Gave written application to branch manager
Sms charges stopped .This was in 2017
If still levied complain to RBI
I think sms alert is something which shouldn’t be disabled and it helps to alert us during any wrongdoing by hackers.
Imagine you’re asleep a late night, and someone trying to gain access in your Bank account or if any unknown charges are deducted ? How would come to know?
Bank will call you ? Nor we can’t be tracking NetBanking or mobile app 24/7 ?
18₹ is not much seeing the benefit you’re getting.
Also that can recovered if you have balance of 10~15K as interest.
Though you can go ahead and request to BM for the stoppage of the same.

Bank of India deduct approx Rs18 from my bank account every 3 months. so, i stop using miss call based balance check. Now no SMS alert service charges debited from last 2 years.

M.MAHI wrote:This sms alert is just like those VAS charges charged by AVOID even when you won't need it. Balance updates and all other important updates are provided by default and there won't be any charges for transactions alerts. The irony here is, you won't even get an sms about deducting this sms charges from Your account.

This is for all banks or just Canara bank? And validity of this offer?

Dad got it done by visiting the branch. It was done in less than ten minutes. He told me that he had to sign a form and rest was done by the branch officials. We later verified that the account type was changed through net banking.

If sms alerts are deactivated , will we get suspicious activity alerts via sms ?

Yes, of course.
SMS alert is a VAS ( Value Added SMS ) services.
Some banks like bank of India offer SMS alert services only if you use any sms banking services.
I guess bank like Canara Bank or few other PSU banks offer SMS alert service only if you use any sms banking services. If you dnt use any sms alert services like sms or misscall based bank account balance check, transaction statement check then bank will not deduct any sms alert fees from your account.
When I visited Canara Bank and requested to stop SMS alerts and stop taking SMS charges, an officer (not a clerk) said they will have to delete my mobile number from bank account. That was the only way to stop SMS charges. But I am sure she was wrong. Basic transaction SMSes still come even though these SMS alerts and charges are stopped.
