Canker Sores/ Aphthous Stomatitis
It appears as a tiny sensitive white spot any where inside the mouth. Some call them aphthous ulcers but it is a misnomer as aphthous itself means ulcer. Whatever, only a qualified medical professional can diagnose this condition. So, once you find something hurting in the mouth run to an ENT specialist.
Causes Vitamin B12 deficiency, trauma by teeth, trauma by foreign substances, as a reaction to drugs like penicillin etc.
What to do? Obviously you go the doctor. Doctor will prescribe you some meds, which might involve some antibiotics especially if the sore is spotted on the back side of the throat. Chlorhexidine Mouth Wash e.g., Hexidine triggers rapid healing. Chlorhexidine ointment e.g., Hexigel might be prescribed. It is usually safe to use Chlorhexidine mouthwash for a while but it can stain teeth in the longer run and it will kill good bacteria of mouth. For pain management Benzocaine e.g., Mucopain might be prescribed. Topical NSAID gels like Zytee RB might be prescribed. It might take 7-14 days for the ulcer to heal.
What to know? This thing is not contagious and it should not spread in the mouth. If it spreads in the mouth then it might be Oral thrush and don't wait to see a doctor. Milk of Magnesia containing antacids e.g. Gelusil help to sooth the spot.
My Experience Back in 2006, I used to skip lunch and have 3 rupees wala Parle-G. We were financially tight. And I didn't want to burden my parents by asking 20-30 rupees everyday for lunch. Then I didn't want to burden my Maa to cook me lunch early in the morning. So, I had to resort to Parle-G. As a result I had developed constipation. I could not sit properly. Now, you might be wondering where am I going with this story. Well, we had to see a general surgeon. He advised me some simple meds for liver, digestion etc etc. The pharmacist said he doesn't have the prescribed liquid but he has the capsule. The capsules were like big narrow dates. First couple of days went like breeze but on the third day I swallowed the capsule from an angle. And it caused damage to back side of mouth near throat. So, it was near impossible for me to swallow anything. The doc scolded me and my father to not follow his advice. The pharmacist accused me of being negligent as cancer patients have to swallow much thicker capsules, infuriating right but it happened. I was prescribed Gelusil. I asked the doctor why. He said it is going to coat the area and pain will become bearable.
First forward to July, 2023. I had the canker sore again. I was advised to apply Mucopain gel, hexigel, to have multivitamins (Mactotal) and to gargle with Hexidine mouthwash. Pain was gone in 4 days. The spot was gone in 14 days. The lingering bad after taste after gargling with hexidine mouthwash is unforgettable. Similarly during COVID-19 time my father had it on his lower lip. He was prescribed with Zytee RB.
Bland non grainy food like rice and daal, milk and soaked bread loaves help a lot. Please avoid hot and spicy food.
Cold Sores/ Fever Blisters
These are tricky ones. These are caused by viruses (HSV 1 and 2) and sometimes these are allergic reactions to drugs like Penicillin.
What to do? A doctor will help you definitely. I really don't know any meds for these things as I have personally never suffered from this, not from herpes.
My Experience When I was a kid, we used to abuse Ampoxine 500 for almost every fever, cold, cough. My lips used to swell like that of Ms Angelina Jolie. But other symptoms accompanied it e.g., blisters on genitals. Shame shame. On one eventful day of 2011, I was hospitalized as I had a severe allergic reaction to Ampoxine 500 and had swollen lips, extremely severe diarrhea, swollen scrotum with some thick white discharges. I was discharged on the next day. I was a case study for the med students. It was a nice day. But this is why you should not mess with antibiotics. If you gonna mess around, then you will find out just like I did.
Mucocele
These are tiny fluid filled sacs appear inside mouth. They look like canker sores but are kina less painful. They are caused by blocked salivary glands/ducts, injury to mouth etc.
Treatment They usually resolve on their own. But the doc might suggest for a minor surgery.
My Experience I had had them sometimes in my life. And they disappeared on their own, sometimes after discharging a salty fluid like thing. The prescribing doc did not prescribe me any meds.
Oral Thrush/Oropharyngeal Candidiasis
It is a type of fungal infection. Its causes are poor oral hygiene, prolonged use of antibiotics (another reason to not to abuse antibiotics.), corticosteroid inhalers for asthma etc. A doctor will be able to diagnose it.
Treatment The doc might prescribe a mouthwash/mouthpaint e.g, Candid Mouth Paint. S/he may prescribe some antifungal meds.
My experience. I ate outside in a food stall. Then I discovered the next day that I can't tolerate slightest of the spicy food. Then I went to an ent doc. He said I have stress ulcer. His prescribed meds made my symptoms worse. Then I went to another doc, Dr GK Dash (RIP). He took a look in my mouth and wrote some meds, which I don't remember. Symptoms were gone in a couple of days.
I don't know if I can cover topics on leukoplakia, lichen planus etc. As they can be very complex and maybe precancerous.
Some prevention ideas
- Gargle with lukewarm saline water regularly.
- Brush regularly.
- Use a torchlight and a mirror to see if there are any white spots, lumps, sores etc. If there are any then consult a doctor especially an ENT doctor.

Ji. Kabhi kabar precancerous thing hota hai. Dikkat wali ek dam.
Good info!
One very important thing - If you get mouth ulcers and they don't heal in a week or so even after treatment, don't neglect or don't keep trying different treatments. Such an ulcer CAN be a cancerous lesion. In such scenario, best is to consult an oncologist directly instead of going to any other doctor.
Having said that, every non healing ulcer is NOT a cancer.
Prevention/ Reducing risk - NO SMOKING (Bidi/ cigarette/ vape/ hukka), NO TOBACCO CHEWING, NO ALCOHOL.

At my home, we are supposed to drink soaked water of the dried amla(Indian Goosebery). 😄
Whenever it happens to me, I eat Becozyme and gargle my mouth with Listerine. It goes away in 5 minutes.

Ok. Works for me just fine. I know my body and brain better, so cann't argue with you there. If you believe like it will take 3 days, then it will always take 3 days for you. Every disease originates and dies in brain first. 🔔 A mind at not ease, produce disease 🔔 Symptoms & recovery just follow later.

Same happened to mine distant relative in village some 10 days ago . Ulcer at the back of mouth . Did not heal with med as thinking canker sore , second opinion in city diagnosis result said cancer , she was operated three days before, they are all tensed and also not financially that strong . The word cancer itself took there half breath out.

Not possible bhai .
It must be some food leftover etc . Canker sore cannot resolve in 5 min unless until squeezed but even than lesion remains . It takes 2 - 3 days .
Haa you can say about getting reileif

But if it was diagnosed in early stage, and as already operated, it's really good!
There might be some chemo or radiation also after surgery.....tell them to complete the treatment and later keep follow ups with their doctor.
I know so many people who got proper treatment and have survived this.
I'm also a Blood cancer survivor.

They are right now in hospital itself as post operation under observation.
Will forward the message .
Hope they do follow ups and regular medicines after discharge as they live in far of village , requires full day journey for city , and being a woman and housewife maybe habit of skipping and avoiding medicines
Loaferg wrote:Ya, it's difficult for people in far off areas but for her it won't be a long treatment.

If they have to give radiation or chemo, usually one month protocol.
And after that 3 monthly scans/ follow ups initially...later even more spaced follow ups.
Nothing much but whatever it is, must be done properly.
Best wishes!

Believe me, I have suffered from the blister like thing on inside my lower lip, just month back only, something like shown in picture 3 above. Reason also I am aware, I did not brush my teeth for 3-4 or more days continuously in a row because of an ongoing construction work that demanded my overseeing, full involvement & tired me down to the last bone. Though it was not painful but it rubbed against teeth so became more swollen up & gave discomfort. And, just one gargle with Listerine actually dissolved it in seconds. Happened 3-4 times in recent months and I got relief by Listerine only.

Mucocele bhai. Woh canker sore nai hai. 🙂🙂🙂 Uska fluid drain hogaya toh uska kaam tamam. Canker sore agar thoda bada n painful hai toh time lagta hai. N kabhi kabhi rula hi deta hai

Painless/lesser pain? Could be cyst like growth as the ulcers don't heal this fast. Yes, can say about pain relief, but to heal something that quick..? Nope.
Abnormal discoloration/deposition, repeated/non healing ulcers are something, one should not ignore. Try maintaining good oral hygiene. Gargling with lukewarm saline water is a good practice (obviously, you don't have to swallow this water). Similar things can also occur in folic acid or vita B deficiencies. Vita. B complex, Vita. C, Iron Follic acid can be taken. Can apply honey locally. For pain, anti inflammatory and local anaesthetics can be used. Stop chewing tobacco, supari, pan masala. And one thing, don't bite these lesions . Many people have urge to bite these a little little and try to suck.

Vitamin/ other nutritional deficiencies can be a factor for mouth ulcers but it takes time (at least few weeks) for supplements to correct those deficiencies and actually show any result.
Most mouth ulcers heal on their own and you give credit to whatever vitamin or anything you took. Few things like salt water gargle help in symptom relief & promote healing too.
Eat healthy balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts to maintain good vitamin/ mineral levels instead of just taking multivitamins.
Get proper doctor consultation and then any supplements if prescribed.

While not specifically marketed to treat canker sores, the regular use of Listerine® (OTC) and Peridex® or Periogard® (Rx chlorhexidine gluconate) may lessen the pain of canker sores. However these rinses often do not prevent recurrence.
