Don't Give PAN Number to Unknown Callers

Lots of fraud calls have started coming after the lockdown started…First they were asking for Debit/ATM card number & now they are asking for PAN card number with a fake promise that you have a pre-approved CC offer with like 5-10 lacs limit… laughing laughing

Please don’t tell anyone your PAN/card number over the phone until you are sure that they are indeed bank employees…

You will get these calls mostly from unknown Mobile numbers so have TrueCaller installed…Lots of times I have seen that the numbers have already been reported several times so when these types of calls come, I can stay prepared on what to say…

Even banks don’t tell the CC limit in advance…We can only get to know how much we got only after opening the welcome kit and these people telling the card limit without even picking up the docs… laughing laughing

Today I got a call like this so thought about sharing…Previously also got several calls like this but I didn’t give my PAN number over the phone, sometimes even to few bank employees…

Today a lady called me and said “Sir ek Pre-Approved offer hain Standard Chartered bank ke Credit card ka…Aapko 7 lacs Credit limit milega”…I told her that I already have one card from SCB & they don’t allow to hold two cards at a time"…

Then she replied " Sir apka PAN number bataiye, main check karke apko bolti hu"…

I replied : “Mam yehi sab karne ke liye apko apke maa baap ne paal pos ke bada kiya tha, ke aap logo ko cheat kar sako”??

Phir ek lambi khamoshi & she hung up the phone on me… laughing laughing

Last time one man claimed that he’s my branch manager from SBI & asked me for my Debit card number to give me cashbacks…

I gave him this number : 4204 4204 4204 4204 Expiry 07/23 & CVV 420… laughing laughing

He said Sir aisa number nhi hota…Maine bola ha Sir apke liye special number liya hain 420 wala… laughing laughing

Then he got angry on me & I told him that, I don’t even have any account in SBI…And he hung up the phone on me… laughing laughing

This is a serious matter though…These morons earn a full time income by doing all these…Senior people who don’t know much about banking give these assh*** what they want & become the victims of banking fraud…All banks send emails regarding these but not many people read those emails (especially senior people)… pensive

Not related, but when I give copies of aadhar/pan/passport when required I make sure to write the purpose and date. I write this on the id (not the white paper around it) so that the employees don't think of misusing. If they refuse just tell them to attest themselves showing the original id that the details are right and you would want to make sure that your photocopies are not misused.

Physical documentation is still fine & we can be certain that they are indeed bank employees because they come with banking documents/files etc but no-one should provide any such private details over the phone…

Too many people are after hacking the PayTM accounts too…

I get lots of SMS & calls regarding that too and funny thing is that, all the messages that claim that they are coming from PayTM always have some typos in them…They didn’t master the art yet… laughing

And @demerius2020 , I always report the numbers to TrueCaller writing the real reason like “SBI Card Scam Calls” and “Don’t Pick Up this Fraud Call” etc… laughing laughing

1. these guys talk unprofssionally and gets angry soon you caught their neck
2.they will dream offer like card will get approved in 1 hour , and LTF
3.i just asked them to give what they say in writing and they known that its not their piece of cake and they hung up and gone
4. make sure to report as spam and adorn with good name like Green-mango-more on truecaller so that others can be beware of them

Usually these typos are intentional. It is one way to weed out the educated crowd and make sure only the gullible respond.

Any problems if we give PAN number to someone? How can they misuse it?
P. S. I just gave it to a sbi credit card caller yesterday

Link Copied

Yes it can be misused… People can even take loan on your PAN card and you won’t know… Some unknown companies and apps give loans based on just the PAN number… This already happened in several places before and maybe still happening… Few people shocked to see unknown loan accounts and amounts on their CIBIL… Don’t give anyone your PAN number over phone until you are really sure that he/she is a real bank employee…Fake people calls everyday to innocent customers pretending bank employee…Install TrueCaller app if you haven’t already…Until the number shows a Verified TrueCaller number, don’t give anything to anyone over phone…If the number shows as unknown without a proper name, don’t give your PAN card…Several times I get incoming calls where TrueCaller showing me that how many people already reported the numbers and several of those numbers show as Fraud/Scam etc which means the numbers were already reported for fraud so I get to know the reality of these callers even before picking up the calls and talk to them based on what the caller id is showing to me…

Even if the PAN number doesn’t get misused, You still will not want unknown people checking your CIBIL, do you??

Tell them straight to provide his/her official email id (No gmail or hotmal but @ bankname.com type ids) where you can send him or her the PAN number as you won’t be sharing the number over ohone…And if the employee is real, he/she will give you one… If it’s a scammer, they will keep insisting you to share over the phone only…In that case, just cut the call, block the number and report the number to TrueCaller so that next recipients can be alerted also…

Recently got call from so called “Bank Manager, SBI” who talked about whether my debit card has been received. I first asked him which branch. He talked about the City’s main branch which I know do not have a “Branch Manager” and has a much senior level officer. Then I asked him to give me his employee ID number. He just hang up.

Yes since a vast majority of senior people like retired & pensioners have accounts in SBI, these scammers start the conversation claiming to be calling from SBI or as a Branch manager of SBI & I don’t know how many senior innocent people gets affected by this everyday in India who don’t understand all these & give away their debit card number to these scamsters… confused

I received similar messages from QP-NCCARD a couple of weeks ago in 2 nos. that were regd. with bank accs. Included was a no. to which missed call was to be placed for further details. Received a call next day but the agent after enquiring about the DOB said that it was above the upper age limit for CC issuance! Dunno it was a scam call or not. Anyways if the date of birth alone is leaked can that be a cause of concern?

Helpful Helpful

DOB itself can’t be misused unless you have set that as a password or as a security answer on any site and yes many people set their DOB as their password on some sites and also as Security question to reset the password…So if someone has set his security answer as his DOB, the hacker “may be able” to reset his password depending which site is that because not all sites are well secured…

Please don’t even bother responding to these SMS messages until the proper company or the bank’s name shows up as the SMS sender…

@Sushrut.B
thank you for your comments, helps me alot
i applied for citi card via amazon, when i see offer in my amazon account.after submitting my details and otp, immediately i got call from them.he asked and i gave my details, like pan, aadhar, home addres, and my fathers home address(home town address also,i don’t understand why he asked this) after that 1 person came and collected papers, photo from me.but until now i haven’t get card.from the last 35 days,in online, showing rejected and when i called cc,they are saying there are some issues from their side,so delaying, and will update on or before 25th.but until now i don’t know any thing about my card status.after reading these comments..omg
any suggestion from your side?

Helpful Helpful
Link Copied

1) Did you post your phone number anywhere in public regarding the same issue ?? Never do that if you have done that…I learned it the hard way myself…Several years ago, I have mistakenly provided my mobile number to PayTM on their timeline & not by messaging…It was actually too early in the morning & I mistakenly did that because my sleep was still not over.. :/

After that I got several calls from unknown mobile numbers claiming to be calling from PayTM…One of them even asked for my PayTM password & told me that he will need it to fix an issue which I was facing with my PayTM account which I wrote publicly on PayTM’s twitter timeline…

These people are always spying on the big payment companies & bank’s twitter & Facebook timelines & searching for frustrated customers who are facing issues & providing their mobile numbers in public…Many people still do these…

These scammers read those frustrated customer comments, take their mobile numbers from FB & Twitter timeline of the companies & start calling the customers & it’s natural for the customers to believe that the calls are genuine & it’s the company employee calling them because they only posted their numbers on the company’s official social timelines & then they become a victim of fraud..

So, if you have applied directly from Amazon & you have never publicly disclosed your mobile number anywhere, you don’t need to worry…Cards can get declined due to several reasons & is a natural thing…I have not applied for the CITI card via Amazon or Zomato so not sure how the work & only people who applied for this CC via Amazon can tell you if they ask for father’s home address & town or not because I’m listening about this for the first time myself also…

Call both the customer care numbers of Amazon & CITI & provide your application number & if both of them say that it’s got declined, then it’s declined…

Just now received another fake call…One lady from Orissa (as per Truecaller) called & told me exactly the below…

“Sir main HSBCHMPC…Sorry HDFC bank se bol rahi hu…Aap apne card ka limit badhana chahte hain?” laughing laughing

I said no mam…Already bahot limit hain…Aur nhi chahiye…

She said “kya Sir”?? I replied to her : “Ha mam jarurat se jyada limit hain, aur nhi chahiye”…She got shocked & hung up the call because she didn’t expect this reply… laughing

I can’t misbehave with ladies even though I know these people are fraud…I can’t go down to their level but thanks to TrueCaller (no Truecaller Profile DP & no Verified TrueCaller profile), I can stay prepared in advance even before picking up the calls…She can’t even pronounce the bank name properly & neither she can speak Hindi properly & claiming to be calling me from HDFC bank & that too from an Orissa number from where no real credit card company people ever call customers…

For SimplyClick you can apply directly on SBi site…Here’s the link…They are doing Video Kyc now mostly so most probably no-one will come to pickup physical docs…You won’t see this card banner on Amazon…

So, apply directly on the official site here : https://www.sbicard.com/en/personal/credit-card...

And for Amazon Pay ICICI Card, keep checking this page on Amazon specially dedicated to apply for this card : https://www.amazon.in/cbcc/mark...ge

You will get the Apply now option enabled on the above link when you are eligible for it so keep checking it once in a while…

And the lady told me that she’s calling me from Bajaj Finance & started asking about completing a loan procedure & about which bank my salary gets deposited etc…I told her that I’m not a salaried person & she hung up the phone on me…I think some scammers have seen this thread of mine & disturbing me intentionally because I don’t get so many calls in like every 5-10 minutes…… laughing

Actually I’m receiving multiple calls from “bankbazaar” for pre approved lifetime free cards . They ask me for a videokyc through a link sent in the ?? verified whatsapp account of bankbazaar . But when I go in that link it directs to digilocker and shows a disclaimer that they can downlaod all the documents my digilocker ..

Is it a legit call ? Or a fraud .
The messages come from verified whatsapp account of bankbazaar and it redirects to bankbazaar (or a similar looking ) website at first before proceeding to digilocker .

Yes it is legit. Digilocker is a govt project for citizens to save their records/forms/certificates etc online & not just anybody can get the access to use it for authorization.

Guys ,thanks for the response .
I know about digilocker and I have stored several docs in it . Pls see the disclaimer screenshot I posted . It says the bank can access and pull all my documents . It doesn’t specify which all . That is the issue . I cannot give all my certificates and ids to banks for a CC

Write an email to the bank & ask which docs will be pulled from digilocker. Keep [email protected] in cc.

If DigiLocker concept is implement properly and govt force all bank and telecom comapny, such fraud can be avoided by giving direct access to them when needed id-proof or other document. In that case no physical copy need to be submitted and employee can’t sell it to other company.
and We and Govt can have track that who accessed it and when.

recently i was doing a txn with my insdus bank dc. it was declined since bank has disabled the online/pos/international txn on cc/dc on the cards which as instructed by rbi.

the point is this will help a lot of innocent people who don’t use card other than atm cash withdrawal and give the card details unknowingly.
