At the toll plazas across the country, the Automatic Payment System Fastag (FASTag) will become mandatory from 12 pm tomorrow. The central government gave this information in a statement on Sunday. Those who have not yet applied it on their vehicles or whose vehicles have this tag but are not working, may have to pay heavy fines. As a penalty, customers may have to pay double the amount of fee charged according to the category of their vehicle.
Earlier on Sunday, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the timeframe for implementation of Fastag will not be extended. He said that vehicle owners should immediately adopt this e-payment facility.
Fastag facilitates electronic payment of fees at toll plazas. It was introduced in 2016. Making the tag mandatory will also help to ensure that vehicles are allowed to pass through toll plazas non-stop.
Gadkari while answering a question regarding fastag at Nagpur airport said that the government has increased the timefag registration deadline two-three times and now it will not be extended further. Now everyone should buy Fastag immediately. He said that on some routes, Fastag registration has gone up to 90 percent and only 10 percent people are left. He said that fastag is also available at toll points and people should use it for smooth traffic.
The central government has increased the mandatory fastag deadline for vehicles from January 1, 2021 to February 15, 2021.

Also the problem is,There are usually 2 lanes reserved for cash payment, which has long queues, where you can pay the regular fare in cash. The long queue to these cash only lanes blocks rest of the FASTAG lanes as well, creating traffic block and confusion as you approach the toll.
ALSO you can still pay by cash at the FASTAG only lanes, provided you are ready to pay double the fare. Since even the double fare is affordable for most people, people who wants to pay by cash but move faster, start queuing up at the FASTAG ONLY lanes ready to pay double the fare, creating delays for even law abiding FASTAG users.
Unless they start charging hefty penalty, people won’t follow the rules and traffic flow not going to ease.

Good if it happens, but the transactions should be fast, my experiences (in Maharashtra) are not good at all….. I have to stop the car, wait for 3-5 secs for the toll gate to open…..
No idea about other cities/states
