NEW DELHI: The central government on Monday asked the

Serum Institute

 and

Bharat Biotech

to lower prices of their Covid-19 vaccines amid criticism from various states who objected to profiteering during such a major crisis.

The issue of vaccine pricing was discussed at a meeting chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba.

Now the two companies are expected to come up with revised pricing for their vaccines.

The Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has fixed the price of its Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin, at Rs 600 per dose for state governments and at Rs 1,200 per dose for private hospitals.

The Pune-based

Serum Institute of India

(SII), the world’s largest vaccine maker in terms of volume, has announced a price of Rs 400 per dose for its Covid-19 vaccine, ‘

Covishield

’, for state governments and Rs 600 per dose for private hospitals.

Wow. What a considerate Government.
Vaccine which is to be used twice in the lifetime of a human is getting price watch by Government (and some woke people).

But cooking oil, electricity, fuel and other items which will be used throughout the lifetime gets no love or special attention.
Thanks for Maximum Government and Minimum Governance.

First apply charges
Then to show public request to remove the charges or make discount

These are the old tricks of the Government.

They may also do some subsidy tactics here which they did for LPG wink

we are literally the Bangladesh Thailand Vietnam Sri Lanka of the world when it comes to pharmaceutical manufacturing (India is to drug makers, what South East Asia, Bangladesh are to Adidas, GAP, JCPenney)

It is hilarious (dark comedy) when these @ma da fa ka (contract manufacturers, marketeers) play the victim card (and even find sympathisers). for instance,
somewhere here, i think it was @myfungang829 or someone,
who… with all sincerity passionately went on defending the protégé (Poonawallas) of their political ideologue.

while possibly being T O T A L L Y oblivious to how the system works.
in India, we sidelined ‘lobbying’ with good old system of kickbacks (quid pro quo) and bribing. (in countries were bribing is made official, in the name of "lobbying’; things continue as it is, but with lobbyists openly doing what they do).

so a massive investor or ‘foundation’ (in present scenario, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, few others) are the ones that support all the research, development. sometimes projects get shelved or discarded for being unviable. and at others, it may or may not be worth it to market a formulation after it is brought to fruition after prolonged R&D.
scenarios like these, during pandemics, where emergency approvals (phati padi hai, jo sil de: uss se silwa lo approvals) are sought and given: are simply a win win for all involved.

ought to give some insights. the monies for almost all the R&D of this one have come from Gates Foundation.
and the Oxford people could have (and wanted to) even enmasse produce the formulation (with some ‘arrangements’).
But Gates, with their experience in similar ongoing work for antiretroviral therapy/drugs, prevailed.
they insisted that the manufacturing be done by conventional agencies, companies with proven track record to mass manufacture drugs. and do so at a good pace, while keeping tabs on costs, pricing.

even PSUs like Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL Lifecare Limited) are well recognised and trusted worldwide. (mostly for male and female contraceptives).

Big deal then that a SII was mandateď to be a manufacturer/ local local licencee.

had the real buccaneers like a Khorakiwala (Wockhardt) or Hamied (Cipla) been around AND put their head to it, they could AND WOULD have made this for a pittance

it all boils down to the motivation and pressures one has.

rampant profiteering (kickbacks need to be taken cognisance of) is going on in this circus (which we labelled as ‘pandemic’). but it is neither surprising, nor shocking.
rather it is expected!😔

added the exact time stamp.

keywords: like ‘royalty free’ ‘no royalties’ ‘non profit basis’ may please be noted.
and under the aegis of the various projects it runs, BMGF (the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) has literally poured billions in these very infrastructure facilities, pharma companies, governments.. for over a decade now…
to bring them at par with global scale, standards.

if just materials, skilled workforce and existing plants and processes are those of Serum Institute of India Private Limited, then at-least i fail to understand how they are (contextually) any more privileged than a Yi Da Limited, Vietnam!
imagine Yi Da Limited, Vietnam selling those jeans in Vietnam at a substantially higher price , than the price/s at which Levi Strauss & Co. sells the same $|─|¡t in its own home market (U.S. of A), or even in a ‘third world’ market (a term which we are still referred to by😕)

but being the protégé of the powers that be, give any Serum Institute of India Private Limited, others
the power to have their samosa and (to) eat it too.

or perhaps @myfungang829 has some (better) understanding when he says https://desidime.com/forums/dost-and-dimes/topics/covid-vaccine-may-cost-rs-1-000-in-pvt-market#post_7564186.
although the childlike naivety did make me smile.
@myfungang829 honestly seems to believe that the U.N. supported programs would procure COVAX, other vaccines at ‘more than double’ the prices that the Indian manufacturer is selling it locally (within Bharat).
(Serum Institute of India Private Limited IS a registered supplier of COVAX, with the U.N. and has also already exported the AstraZeneca licensed vaccine too).

Without Vaccines Covid spreads and people might die… without cooking oils people get healthier and slim…. Without Petrol or Diesel  people would ride zero pollution  cycles or cycle rickshaws….

…. And without oxygen … mmm… mmm..Ummm… And Without oxygen People might evolve into a new Life form which can produce it’s own oxygen and might even start photosynthesis on their skin. Like plants you know ( aka vegetative state)
