Hindu New Year 2021: Shukla paksha pradipada of Chaitra month is celebrated as Hindu new year. 2021 Chaitra Shukladi or Hindu new year falls on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Vikram samvat 2078 and Saka samvat 1942 starts on the same day.

There are numerous days throughout the year celebrated as New Year’s Day in the different regions of India. Observance is determined by whether the lunar calendar is being followed or the solar calendar. Those regions which follow the Solar calendar, the new year falls on Baisakhi in North and Central India, Rongali Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Vishu in Kerala, Pana Sankranti in Odisha and Poila Boishakh in Bengal in the month of the calendar, i.e., Vaishakha. Generally, this day falls during 14th or 15th of the month of April. Those following Lunar calendar consider the month of Chaitra (corresponding to March-April) as the first month of the year, so the new year is celebrated on the first day of this month like Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra. Similarly, few regions in India consider the period between consecutive Sankarantis as one month and few others take the period between consecutive Purnimas as a month. In Gujarat the new year is celebrated as the day after Diwali. As per the Hindu Calendar, it falls on Shukla Paksha Pratipada in the Hindu month of Kartik. As per the Indian Calendar based on Lunar Cycle, Kartik is the first month of the year and the New Year in Gujarat falls on the first bright day of Kartik (Ekam). In other parts of India, New Year Celebrations begin in the spring.

Ugadi 2021 will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Ugadi, also known as Yugadi, is celebrated as the New Year’s Day by people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka

Happy Hindu New year my fellow DD members.

@Sigma999 Nice Info
Learned something new about festivals.

Googled and Tried to understand calendars. Too many new terms and too much of history.
In simple terms what I understood is:

The calendar which world follows now is a Gregorian calendar which is a solar calendar which is designed based on sun movements. Here leap day is added every 4 years as a solar day is approximately 4 minutes shorter.

Lunar calendars are those which are solely designed based on movements of moon. Lunar cycle is approximately 29.5 days and a year is 354 days approx. Which is 11 days shorter than a solar calendar. Islamic Calendar is one such.

Lunisolar calendars are those which are designed based on moon cycles but also adjusted to solar calendar. Hindu calendar is one such example. Here to compensate those lost 11 days, an entire month called leap month is added every 32 or 33 months.

There are some other calendars which add an additional year after few thousand years.

Some new calendars are developed and being developed to follow same date on same week day concept by adding a leap week every few years.
