This day is also known as Kamgar Divas, Kamgar Din and Antrarashtriya Shramik Divas in India. May Day is also known as Labour Day or International Workers’ Day. May Day has different origin stories in different countries. However, the common theme in all countries is the labour class taking a stand against the exploitation they were subjected to.

Why do we celebrate Labour Day?

Ironically, when people started working in factories during the Industrial Revolution (1800s) their work-days were long: 10-16 hours each, six days a week. Many were standing throughout and working in unsafe environments.

These harsh conditions continued for over 100 years until social reformers started to call for reduced working hours. Welsh social reformer Robert Owen coined the slogan ‘eight-hours labour, eight-hours recreation, eight-hours rest’ that caught on quickly. It took many more decades of struggle before the 8-hour work day was internationally ratified around 1920.

It is to celebrate the contributions and achievements of workers everywhere that International Labour Day was instituted and declared a holiday. Those of us from privileged backgrounds have enjoyed this holiday without really registering its significance!

However, we must remember that not everyone is on holiday today. Essential workers, house help, security personnel, and delivery persons are among the folks who are working long hours today to keep our lives running smoothly.

Today, we express our gratitude to each and every one of them for their tireless efforts, especially in these dark times.

Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications.

A Mayday call is a distress signal used during emergency procedures. It indicates life-threatening emergency especially by aviators and mariners. However, in some countries local organizations such as fire-fighters and police forces and transportation organizations also use them.

How is a Mayday call used? In times of emergency, the call is issued three times in a row – ‘Mayday Mayday Mayday’
