What is that hardness or ppm?
hard water
hard water in normal taps if used for washing and bathing is harmful and damages the clothes.do those tap extensions available online work which have filters in them?do they really "normalize" the water? are they available for old types of taps? and what about their refill packs?
if there is anymore alternative then please share.need in some old rural area where no filtration or anything is there from the municipal/society end

Have been using hard water for bathing and washing since I was born , no issues so far
No idea about filters only use RO for drinking water

No idea about it bro. I think there's no harm in bathing in hard water, only drinking is dangerous. And washing clothes in hard water will not clean effectively,so why we are using detergents which makes it softer.

actually it causes detergent streaks on clothes.
No tap mechanical filter can make hard water soft. Hard water means it has too much dissolved solids (minerals, fine dust, chemicals, metals etc) only RO plant/water softner can make water soft for domestic usage. U need to check TDS level. Upto 150-300 is not a big problem, above 500 it may cause minor problems
At village level u can use Alum to sediment the impurities & use supernatant water. This is best I can advise currently.
My pipeline water tds is 150 so i have no issues
Tap attachments can never soften water, at the most they will filter the water and hence these filter cartridges need to be replaced time to time. Water softeners use permanent ion exchange resins which just need periodic recharge using salt.

room is situated in old building in a rural area.local municipal does not even use any basic chemical to clean the water. tds level is more than 800 and sometimes above 1000. ro gets it to 100-200. the biggest problem is any detergent, powder or liquid, and any washing method, by hand or washing machine, is leaving very very bad detergent streaks, marks and is ruining clothes. the water is stored in a concrete water tank which has never been cleaned in the last 50 years, cant do anything about it due to some cases in property between owners. some people living here dont care and some use boiled water for everything, bathing, cleaning clothes etc. since u all have said that these tap extensions, something like this https://www.amazon.in/WaterScience-Shower-Filte... are not helpful, then can we add chlorine or something in water to make it atleast usable to wash clothes?boiling water for everything is not a solution

Just descale once in 5 months

Adding chlorine won't make hard water soft.
Tank may have heavy hard water deposits. Logical way is cleaning the tank.
Use Alum if it helps(cheapest) .
If budget is not a problem get a water softner installed

Alum after taking water in bucket? Normal alum which is used after shaving?what does it do?please suggest a water softener and it can be installed on tap? Like we meausre tds, is there a parameter to measure hardness of water?

Alum = Aluminium sulfate (also known as Fitkari in Indian subcontinent) is easily available in Indian grocery stores either in solid or powder. Tds IS THE MEASURE of hardness of water.. Sorry I can't recommend any specific water softner brand as I have not used it personally.. If tank IS NOT cleaned from very long and IF you're Getting solid particles in tap water then the filter you said may filter out those & can be helpful.

Not getting any particles in water.water quality as such is very poor.

Cleaning tank is not possible because of some dispute or nobody wanting to shell out money to clean it? If its the latter, bite the bullet and pay the full amount to clean it. No one will oppose this proposal. Don't ruin your health because of indifferent morons.

TDS is not the measure of hardness of water.
Hardness is caused by either magnesium and calcium carbonates or their sulfates and chlorides and cannot be measured by a TDS meter. TDS and hardness have different units.
A high TDS water can be soft.
ontherocks wrote:thanku. though water is not visibly this much dirty here. will this help in detergent streaks?Alum helps to flocculate. In layman terms, it binds small particles together so that they become big and heavy and settle down due to gravity.
