How much is knowledge worth?

Sometimes a LOT… Knowing how to fix a problem fast can be worth a lot.. But usually require very good management that recognizes not just your short term value but also long term value.. ie keeping you around even when enough work is not available.. We keep a caretaker around paying him far higher than normal rates because he knows things.. Secrets and such of the building and he is also smart in figuring things out. While many go, why are we paying him so much when we can find others and pay them half as much.. But do the others know where the water or electric or seweage lines are laid out? Or how to fix a plumbing problem in a high rise?

One company I worked for billed something that I spent a day on $50k.. I thought it was a joke but this was a big deal since like 2500 people were unable to work and billion $$$ equipment was laying idle.. The thing was we were only working on this as a seeing if we could do it since many other companies were also working on it including themselves and we really did not think we could do it or more like my managers and stuff did not think I could do it.. It was kept very low key until I finished and handed them the solution at which point everyone started jumping and yelling..

They also got bought out later by that company as well.. Even though they themselves had a division that sold similar services as well..

So maybe it is also recognizing that you are not as good as you think you are..
