Hello Mitro,
My cousin is going to sit in his campus placement. So he wants to prepare for GD (Group discussion). He is average in English speaking. Any source or strategy to prepare for GD, please share. TIA

GD isn’t just about how fluent you’re with English (/ being grammatically correct).. its more related to how you can communicate your point with a group of people (Eye contact is Imp*)
If you don’t know anything about the topic being discussed then you can’t talk. So.. getting familiar with the most discussed topics is the first thing anyone should do

Also unlike JAM, where you get your turn.. here in the case of GD, you might have to take it.

Initiation is a big plus
If you cannot, then wait for the right moment to take over (Don’t wait until the speaker finishes his speech)
Don’t delay too much because everyone else is also waiting to do the same..

Tell him to practice speaking speaking sitting in front of a mirror. First focus on speaking without pausing intentionally(unintentionally there will be pauses anyway) for at least 2-3 minutes straight. Next step would be to practice speaking with a friend whose job is to first listen without interrupting & later to interrupt periodically saying something like “could you explain that part again” or “I don’t agree with you here” etc.

In simple Talk when it’s your turn and don’t interfere while others talking.
Give space for others and do support others if you really know if their content is true.
Don’t make it as debate and not to shout more.
Don’t be silent if the topic is irrelevant/unknown to you.. add your points by recreating it as general topic by polishing it.
Courage, confidence and eye contact are more important.

GD me kuch traits dekhte hain. Leadership, listening skill, adaptability, convincing skills, communication skills( listening skill ek subset hai), assertiveness. Toh unhe bolo to be himself. One should not really change oneself to appease others.
And GD topic will be shared 10-15 mins before. So, one will get time to prepare. So, ask him to learn to search Google. Knowing about current affairs is a plus point. Before sitting the exam, one should know about the company. If it’s an IT company, they might ask, what do you think of Chinese technology? If one ll show patriotism n nationalism at GD n start telling how China is attacking india then there is a high chance that that person won’t be getting the job. 🙂 So, knowing the context is very important.
Ask him to keep calm, not to get triggered easily.
And rest tips can be found easily on the internet. 🙂

I advised my friend’s brother to run GD tapes & pause them randomly to assume it’s his turn & start speaking on concerned topic. It helps one get in the groove & helps in instilling a bit of confidence. Confidence, timing & brevity are factors to keep in mind.

Is GD offline? If it’s campus placement then I suppose it’ll be not a fish market. Those are decent GD to be a part of. Just try quality over quantity. And speak with ease. People more often tend to listen to someone who is different. So if everyone is shouting, speak silently. If everyone is speaking silently, you can raise your voice a bit.

Average English is sometimes more than enough for GD but the key is to be able to represent your thoughts clearly to the person conducting gd.

Tell him to check what the company’s previous year gd topics so that he knows on what subjects they could ask and read them.

If he has read a little bit of everything and knows the basic nuances he can frame his speech via what the other members say like if the topic is social media boon or curse and he doesn’t know much then he could first listern to 2-3 people and then either counter them with logical statements or talk in support of them like i agree with my friend/colleague and would like to add some more points to this(reframe some of their statements and add a little bit of your own).

In this way even if he has lesser knowledge on the topic he could still speak a number of things and it would even show his attentiveness and team building nature which mostly IT companies are looking for.

Just remember that confidence and speaking early is the key and if you don’t get the chance to speak early then try to conclude it which will be much more helpful.

Rest of the things have already been covered in a much better way by other dimers so i think its more than enough for him to prepare.

Best of luck to him 👍🏻✌️
