My dad will be 60 in January. He currently doesn't have any medical insurance. What's the best and most cost-effective insurance option for him before his 60th birthday?

At 60 years of age, getting a health insurance plan will be very pricy. Avoid going for cheap one's like Star since they have a terrible claim settlement ratio and nitpick not covered charges during settlement. I suggest you go for a group Mediclaim which I've seen offered by various PSU banks as a part of their bancassurance offerings. You'll have to visit the branch and check if offerings. The waiting period and PED exclusion list will be smaller for group covers.

At age 60, you won't find any cost effective plans. If price is the only concern check CARE and STAR.
