iPhone pricing in India on-par with the USA

This is for the base models that are assembled in India, not the Pro models which are still imported from China and attract duty.
iPhone 15 (128GB) - USD 799 vs INR 79,900
My title looks incorrect on the surface, but we must remember one important factor. The iPhone in India is INR 79,900 including 18% GST.
iPhone 15 USD retail price is USD 799 before state-wise sales tax.
At today's exchange rate of 83:
USD 799 * 83 = INR 66,317.
INR 66,317 + 18% GST = INR 78,254. Not far off from the official Indian retail price of Rs. 79,900.
Apple is no longer looting the Indian consumer with high prices. The iPhone is expensive because of 18% tax being levied on us.
For someone who can avail of the GST set-off, it no longer makes sense to try and get it from abroad.
Writing this post because in another thread, lot of people are commenting that even though Apple is assembling in India, they are not passing on the benefits to Indian consumers. That is simply not true. The actual price of the iPhone in India is INR 67,711 pre-tax, which is almost priced on-par with the USA.
Just wanted to spread knowledge on the real reason iPhone is expensive in India, i.e. 18% GST.
So the truth, as usual, is that we are not being looted by foreign company...we are being looted by our own govt!
NYC is one of highest tax places in US, State tax, City tax and Metropolitan tax all add up to ~9%.
Meanwhile in India we pay 18%.
All the raw items are also imported which again attracts tax
Iphone should be taxed @ 28%, while reducing gst on below @ 10k phone, gst already did similar treatment with roti & paratha
Almost every people pay tax in America so if govt get 9% that is enough for them but in India? 1% people pey taxes so to make up for the non tax paying citizen 18% is charged.
The worst part of taxes in India is that you know half of it will go in someone's pocket and the rest will be used to build a road which won't even last for a year.
Iphone 15 is made in indian. Some parts may still imported mostly semiconductor chips etc. For these apple would already paid gst in import taxes etc.
So end of day they have gst credits. While selling phone they would pay gst only on profits and for assembly costs. Not on entire phone.
Good knowledgeable post. Also add US total including taxes in states like louisiana / washington
additionally one shouldn’t forget to add the additional forex charges we pay while buying an iphone from abroad.
With some good offers one would be profitable in buying an iphone in india itself.
Also even 5 years back India used to get latest iphone on sale after a month. In fact I remember. US UK Aus and few more countries used to get on launch day, China and few more countries a week latter. India was totally ignored as sales were of no interest for them. This is really a matter of pride that Indians have forced apple to take a look and get way higher priority than most other countries. Indians are no longer looking to buy old and cheaper iPhones, but the latest and best ones.
Iphones must be taxed @ 50% so that budget smartphones can be sold without any taxes.

Yes here’s my proposition.
0 taxes for smartphones under 8K.
10% for under 10k.
20% for under 20k.
30% for under 50k.
40% for under 1L.
And finally 50% for 1L+.
I like most will be back to my channels abroad. Let the government enjoy. And I am sure most large companies will stop taking interest in selling their best devices in India as sales will not be that much. India will have to do with old models dump. Apple will just use India as a production house. And reliance will profit with their sub par mobile phones.
As if the government is such a fool.

Poorer half of India's population pays two-thirds of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collected by the government.
1L+ mobile to rich buy karte h.
Govt want to milk the poor and middle class only. Sub 10K mobile se tax hataana to dur, badha na de, wahi ganimat hogi🤣
LYF and Jio Phones are best

So lets great this straight.
We want iPhone, ONLY Apple iPhone to be taxed @ 28%. For 70k+ priced samsung / oneplus or others we are ok with 18% gst. And this is because we can’t afford iPhone and can afford others similarly priced smartphones. And this will help us in reducing prices for below 10k phones?
I would say why not tax all smartphones 28%, use that to build roads, better villages (in other words fill up ministers coffers). Cheapo smartphones should be good enough why do we need a costly devices including androids, (yes a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G costs 1.35L). If we want costly smartphones we should pay higher taxes.
I disagree with your view of targeting a single company because they are good at what they do. I am happy that government agrees with me.

What about Pro models

Milking the cow.
First thing, these are not manufactured in India.
Second, these are premium buyers that apple is trying to milk even further.
Doesn't makes sense, still expensive. Company is making more profit per unit sold in India vs US.
if you know where to buy, you can get 5-7k discounts on launch day itself.
So purchasing Iphone 15 is better.
I mean good intentions sir, but you are trying to aware people who choose to be unaware.

there is something called purchasing power parity
