Is it possible to call with a fake caller ID number displayed to the receiver

I now realize that the Simpl IVR Call fraud has been executed at a much advanced high-tech level. The fraudsters seems to have spoofed the caller IDs of the IVR calls made by them by randomly selecting unknown mobile numbers or numbers of customer care of reputed companies.

I received IVR call from 7977912345 which on googling turns out to be official customer care of Reliance Digital. Some one reported another IVR Caller ID as 9686645189 which on googling is the customer care of Simple Energy Electric Vehicles selling company.

Need comments from tech experts, whether the above is technically possible by generating calls from computers rather than calling from actual mobile numbers

Yes Possible , We Can Call With Any Number As Caller Id... I Played With Friends In 2018 And Everyone Shocked...  At That Time I Paid Some Money... Website Link :: Click Here  (Usa Vpn) Now I Don't Know If It Is Still Working For India.

With This We Can Call To Airtel Number 1 Or 2 Times Only, 3rd Time It Won't Work As Airtel Servers Detected As Fake Caller Id Incoming Call... Other Networks Unlimited Times.

Edit :: Phone Number Will Be 13 Digits... +191xxxxxxxxxxxx , But Phone Contacts Check Last 10 Digit Numbers And Displayed As Frnd number.

I read in some reddit thread sometime back that they use some free app/website to place these calls and to even send fake whatsapp messages, like from number 7977912345 as op mentioned. as these apps/websites do not require payment so they are not traceable. many users there reported it so they were taken down, don't know whether they are up by new name or not @getready @guest_999 @LIMBO @Ash-D

Back when sender ID spoofing was not specifically made illegal in India,
even sites like way2sms.com did it with messaging (SMS).

And I myself, successfully used it to my financial savings too.

Either Indian Railways or IRCTC had a ten digit number.
And one just needed to send specific format messages to get details like seat availability, PNR status.

I often did not purchase/ pay for 'free N messages' pack.
And sending messages used cost from main balance.

Thus upto the daily free limit, I often messageD friends or others from way2sms or such sites which allowed to relay custom sensor ID.

Obviously one can easily check the message centre number or other details in the header and at times, realise that these do not match with the details of the operator with whom my number was.

Same way, whichever country laws allow it and if Siemens, Cisco switches and infra allow it.
If on our phone we select the 'do not send caller ID info', then I have successfully even called from normal (even keypad/ 2G only) phones and other person could only see 'unknown number' (the text UNKNOWN NUMBER) displayed.

Rest I think others have already mentioned above.
Kids here regularly even ask for message bomber, call bomber services.
These same can also have the caller ID spoofing or as you anticipate.. dedicated VoIP or other software to do this.

By the way @aam_aadmi have you reported this to the [1] operator, [2] law enforcement and [3] Government authorities? Just in case if they do have some checks or surveillance.

Yes I have sought the details (source and actual caller ID) of these incoming calls from Airtel's customer care for the purpose of filing an FIR. Also threatened to include them in the FIR if they don't co-operate.

Let's see whether they respond. Will escalate to nodal officer level after a week, if I don't get a satisfactory response.

But these fraudsters have pulled off a unique masterpiece fraud on a nationwide level. Now the only way to catch them would be by hard interrogation of the beneficiary numbers/connections
