Is moving to bsnl really wise

Looking at price hike of jio and airtel plans fuelled by DD posts of moved/better to move to BSNL ignited some fire in me. But wait,

Are the users moving their primary or one and only number to BSNL?

The answer mostly is No. They still keep their primary, important contact number with one of the pvt. Players and only secondary numbers they are porting.

Because moving their only number to BSNL sometimes put in trouble.

OTP might arrive late, frequent UPI failures. Not easily getting network in most parts of village/city/town. Lack of volte.

But here they say I moved to BSNL and say tata bye bye jio/airtel.

My postpaid airtel tarif raised by 25% for all 3 connections and decided to switch to bsnl. But thinking through

Do you think my assumption right dimers?

Depends on your area

Coverage is pretty much all or none in BSNLs case, there is no in between

No issues in OTP, UPI or anything if you are in proper coverage place

Instead of villages/towns, main issue is in tier 1 cities - BSNL sim is useless in most of Mum nd Hyd

Don't port to BSNL on emotional issues , buy and new sim .. use and throw if experience is not satisfactory

else will be stuck for 3 months on BSNL

No, there are many areas you will not find signals.

For better peace of mind and main connection stick to Airtel/Jio.

They generally do not increase tarrif/plan for the existing postpaid customers and it's applicable for the new customers.

If you rarely go out for the vacation/tour, you can think of going for the BSNL.

Who said they dont increase for postpaid? I have been using airtel for more than 21 years as main postpaid and they just send SMS saying tariff will be increased from next cycle thats all. They simply say the current plan is not available. Whatever hue & cry one make, disconnect etc airtel does not budge. Its 3rd increase in 21 years. 99 plan to 149 to 199 and now 249.

For the last 15 years, I've been seeing one particular issue with BSNL network. Even if the other person (BSNL user) is in a good network coverage area, I still won't be able to connect to him. It happens more frequently than you'd imagine, and I always end up leaving them a message and once they make a call from their phone, everything turns back to normal again.

The signal with BSNL can be a hit or miss. Their 3G data rates can vary from 8Mbps at nights to crawling slow speeds during peak hours in day and evenings. More than call drops it is the quality of voice that can be unpredictable. I dont know about their 4G speeds.

If you need consistent reliable high speed data at ALL times you need a private player by your side. If it's for elders who just do occasional calls and light browsing then BSNL will do. The 201 plan is like Rs 2/day - you cant get a cheaper rate

Recently, I ported one number to BSNL as our tier 3 city has 2-3 BSNL towers within 500 meters. There are no signal, call, or OTP issues, but there are definitely some problems with BSNL:

  • Sometimes, calls get disconnected after talking for 10-15 minutes.
  • Outside our city, coverage is nonexistent. Even BSNL employees are advising against taking SIMs to people from those areas.
  • Another tier 3 city, 10 km away from ours, has no BSNL tower or its tower is broken and not being fixed, according to the same BSNL employees.

A few years back my father asked a friend of his who works at the local circle BSNL head office about 4G plans. He said lot of nearby towns dont even have proper 3G yet. That says a lot about the state of affairs....

Can take of you're living in low density area with towers nearby and not travelling much. Still there's 10-20% chances of not getting it when required, which is 5-10% for others. Also, don't expect stable data connection.

No fear of theft, dont know it comes with hidden benefits. As someone said no need to talk for hours together, even if we talk for a brief moment,  feels like we talked for hours.
