Is property tax mandatory?

You should pay to avoid getting interest added to the taxes every year. BUT, tbh, you only need to clear dues to get no due certificate in case of sale or for any reason. That too you can just go to the committee office and bribe the officer there to clear your dues from his side... allegedly..

Before any of that, you will get plenty of reminders and a deadline to pay before. That too is also very rare.

Property tax is mandatory . Paying it means being on the correct side of law. Ofcourse they're many defaulters who dont pay property, water or other taxes that doesn't mean we should do the same.

Ts: Half of the India doesn't even know about water tax.😂

In the end you will have to pay up with interest and penalty as well.

telangana gov gave property tax interest wavier once..

any how... we totally pay close to 1,00,000 per annum as property taxes ( total is for multiple properties). and here in hyderabad tax for commercial property is high.

I bought a new home last year. But property tax assessment is not yet done. I checked with my neighbour and he said he has paid around 12k as a bribe to the municipality for assessment when he approached voluntarily for assessment. So I am waiting for the municipality to do the assessment and even if they put penalty or interest it wont be more than the bribe amount.

There is no municipality service like water connection,road, drainage connection and there is no garbage collection as well. Even the street lights and poles are laid on the cost of Avenue members.

Your neighbours are freaking dishonest substandard people. 

Yes, it's absolutely mandatory. Keeping due year after year is criminal.

It would pose problem while selling the property. Even while transferring during inheritance.
