Guys, My primary connection is Jio Prepaid, and I would like to if it works without any issues when on international roaming in USA. My usage when on IR is only for incoming OTP. No intentions to make any call or consume data. I also have a few questions on a related note.
Do I need to activate an IR pack before starting from India?
Do I need to have an active plan at all times to avoid any (dis)connection issues? Or since it is for OTP alone, can the SIM survice without an active plan?
Please share if anyone has any recent (atleast from 2020) experiences. You may also share previous experiences if any but please mention the year in which you experienced to get an idea of improvements if any!

Its better to activate international roaming for the first time while you are on the jio network.
You should have an active plan on jio otherwise they disconnect the connection as soon as you reach the grace period.
My friend forgot to recharge on his primary number and he lost that number now.
International roaming packs and the tariffs mentioned on the website works only when jio is connected to ATT, sometime it also connects to t-mobile and at that time the call cost is very high even for incoming calls.
I generally do international calls from my jio prepaid with the main balance and it costs me 2/min
let me know if u have more questions
So the IR pack need to be recharged one time, and the SIM can stay in IR for longer periods with some active plan?
Its better to have an active plan to be on the safe side even for OTP because we dont know they might disconnect the connection before 90 days grace period because international roaming will cost them heavily and thats the reason i suggest you recharge the 3 months unlimited calls and 6gb data pack. I am currently on this plan and using 20% cashback offer.
My only requirement is incoming OTP, and to keep the sim alive.
I feel it is better to port to airtel prepaid and run behind the basic validity pack (99 INR)
What if we have Jio Postpaid?
I have noticed that I can easily place international calls from India at Rs.0.5/min with subscribing to anything. Any thoughts on roaming?
Recently my friends father took a month long Holiday trip to Dubai.
He took Jio plan. Worked perfectly
I remember reading some blogs dates 2017-18 (early days of Jio), people had scary and unpleasant experiences with Jio International Roaming particularly in Dubai. Things may have improved now!
While waiting to board , I would activate the cheapest Vodafone roaming pack for Otps . Plan must be active when leaving India or else it might stop working which is very risky ,
No idea about Jio , but it must be same
Get one of those pre paid sim cards available at destination airport kiosk to make local calls and use uber .Much cheaper than Matrix sim.
They take passport for verification . Sims are also available at local stores or wallmarts
In the past (atleast pre-covid), incoming OTP worked flawless even without an IR plan in place, atleast for me.
I’m least worried about outgoing calls or data on Indian SIM. I will have it sorted. Thank you for your inputs, appreciate much.
IR SMS not send
I am in a similar position. Not able to send sms to verify UPI. What should I do? I receive sms and there is a balance of 20.
