Hi friends,

Today while browsing Moneycontrol, i saw some heart wrenching videos of mothers with their kids and it was written they will die soon if not helped.

Just wanted to know your views on the same.

Also would like to know who runs Ketto and do they earn any money or is non-profit? Are they really the god sent ppl who have setup website for such cases.

They say they only charge Payment gateway fees of 1 to 2%, which I believe is not possible to run such large scale advertisement operations, salary of the people working for them, office, electricity, website, server, where the hell is money supposed to come from so they are lying that they don't charge fees or charge only payment gateway amount

No,it is not a non profit.They charge around 27% as taxes and platform charges.Even some of the campaigns are fake.I personally verified one as it seemed dubious. It turned out the real operation cost was not that much but they collected more for getting commission

I'll say don't fall for them. Or atleast, exercise extreme caution. Yes, they all do look really needy in all those pictures, but understand - THEY'RE ALL ADS!  PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED ADS!

There is insane spending done on ads by Ketto. All that is added to their fees. Even their payment gateway fees is ~3.54%, which is kind of unusual & high!

Consider following points and then think:

  1. It is owned and operated by Bollywood people (red flag even if you're opposer of #BoycottBollywood).
  2. They claim to have real time support even for 0 fee plan. How are those costs borne in a profitable venture?
  3. According to Ketto, they have social worker representatives spread across the country, somewhat like greenpeace - and we know what fraud greenpeace was. I'm myself a victim of greenpeace fraud (ECS registration through forged signature).
  4. In their premium & amplify plans, they do social media marketing, social media outreach, content creation, content curation, promotions & advertising. I guess the ads you're seeing come from these premium plans. But do all these features look like social service?
  5. Till Jan 2019, they had raised USD 8+ lakh from 10+ angel investors. Why are angel investors (hardcore capitalists) investing in a social service platform? Do you think Angel investors would invest in businesses which do not have high profitability, or high return probability?

I hope these points would help you understand and answer your questions like whether Ketto is a non-profit or not. Or are these Bollywood linked people running Ketto really godsend.

But please also note: Not everyone out there is a fraud. Some fundraisers may actually be genuine & needy. Do help the ones which you can verify personally.

==========

Recent case: (source)
Few months back, this scam was caught by people. Technically it was not a scam, but imo it sort of was.
So a young girl Muskaan Bawa from Chandigarh wanted to go to USA for higher education (Harvard University). So she started a fundraiser for paying her fees on Ketto (23 lakhs). She also started another fundraiser on Milaap for 25 lakhs, where her location was Dharamshala, not Chandigarh. People caught these discrepancies. This girl even posted a professionally curated emotional story of her sad life along with a professionally shot video too (probably shot by Ketto).

None of the fundraisers clearly mentioned 'total fee'. Infact HumansOfBombay even tweeted that she had managed the rest and need 23 lakhs only. In that case what was the 2nd fundraiser of 25 lakh doing? And if these fundraising websites are genuine, why proper disclosures are not provided?

Someone even pointed out that unless all fees & dues are already cleared & housing arrangements are done, USA does not provide education Visa beforehand, but this lady already had Visa without paying the course & hostel/accommodation fee. Now I'm not sure if this requirement is true or not, but if anyone has experience or knowledge on this, can provide further inputs.

Now when this fraud/discrepancy was called out by large number of people, both Ketto & Milaap stopped the fundraiser and refunded money to donors. HERE IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE - IF ALL OF THIS WAS GENUINE, WHY STOP THE FUNDRAISER JUST BECAUSE FEW PEOPLE OBJECTED? AND WHY REFUND? ATLEAST GIVE THE GIRL THE AMOUNT WHICH WAS ALREADY COLLECTED (minus their amplify plan fee, ofcourse!). Within days all the collected amount was refunded as if somehow they wanted to hush hush the matter under the carpet asap.

Also, Ketto claims they vet all of the fundraisers before allowing them on their platform, then how come they had no information of girl's fees & location?

Also, the girl turned out to be a model already (if that matters to anyone!).

MORAL: If you want to donate, then read carefully & look for red flags. Do not fall for the marketing language on these websites like they've checked all documentation & correctness or fundraiser or vetted them, it is all just there for the sake of it. Please donate if you can verify a case personally. Even 10 bucks from hundreds of people can make significant difference for really needy.

Thank you for long elaborative inputs. This is eye opener for me. What about Impact Guru? I have been using ketto, milaap and impactguru for making small donations for such cases for last few years . Will do my homework before supporting and sharing such cases further.

@Manitian @dhinchakrohit guys.

We can't verify each such stories on these crowdfunding platforms and then send money for the cause, wts the point when our initial step towards donating for a cause gives as additional mental burden, instead  if you really want to help, visit Orphanages, blind schools and oldage homes, you will get blessings as well as mental peace and you can be assured that the amount really was used for a good cause.

So true, Everyone should follow a simple funda. Don't give money to anyone at any cost. People in the middle always want to take their "share" of it. Buy whatever you can in terms of goods (again which can't be sold easily) but surely which the person needs. One can't help everyone so you can help someone around you and it is fine not to help the person you saw in some ad. If people around them follow this one can stop these  money makers in the middle.

Accept it or not, there is always a big "administration fee" these people charge and they will eat up a bulk part of the donations. People might find this wrong and even some of them have told me I am heartless but I am fine with it. What is the point in contributing 40-50L for some treatments of some newly born kids not even sure that they will go on to live fulfilling lives. That same money can be used for minor treatments of 100s of kids who will have a happy life. As per me it is not worth spending so much money when the kid has to struggle its entire life not living normally. Everyone should be given a chance to pass away peacefully rather than suffering their entire life.

PS- please ignore if you find some of my comments heartless. I don't want to argue about it

There will be operational costs for any organization so the personal share concept will always be there. There could be a couple of false cases, but no sane company would risk their reputation by publishing fake stories and collect funds

In the end, it all comes down to how much you trust the concerned individual/company. You can always donate food/money to people directly (Beggars, helpers and other known cases from your locality) but for extreme cases like these having an intermediate is a must (practically not possible for someone/group to fund the entire treatment/education cost unless the help-seeker is from their close circle). The same can be said about funds going to offline institutions, you can visit them, personally verify some case/situation but in no way we can be sure that the entire funds collected for a specific person will be spent on him/her alone

So, either donate (understanding that at least some assistance will be provided to the affected parties) or don't!

Donating for education is a no-no for me

@atx88 I really can't believe people fall for such scams, same peoples won't give a Damn for donating amount for a school running in a village which can make a huge difference in life of 100's of children, but they were interested in Donating 25 Lakh for Higher education for a Girl that too in USA( foreign nation) , who we have no idea will return to India and serve the country for a good cause.

Org like Ketto, milap are fraud. Most of the charges raised by the patients are over inflated.
