Which model? Doesn’t seem too high if labour charges are included. Depending on the model it can require complete disassembly of the laptop to get to the display. Are they gonna use new, first-party hinges? I hope it’s not something salvaged from old laptops. Might not last long in that case. If third-party ones a bit on the higher side.
I have read that it’s a common issue with some Acer laptops. Compromising on build quality to meet lower price points. Hence I just keep the lid open most of the time. Better a (slightly) dusty display that a broken one!

2500 seems on the higher side for a broken hinge.

Nehru Place would have been the ideal choice, for cheap repair. Depending on the lappy model and bargaining, could cost between 600-1000 I guess.

May be, try calling some repair guys from nehru place and ask if they could come and replace the hinge at home. I am not sure but I heard the market is closed these days?

Edit – check if hinges are available online for the particular model, then u can order and get it replaced by some repair guy nearby.

I also faced that a while back only one of them was faulty.
In Nehru place costed me around 1000-1100 but the whole display body was changed.
But one thing have to say quality of work there is very bad.

I have Acer a515-51g and some keys of keyboard doesn’t work and require force press to work sometimes. Now in bangalore there is full lockdown. I am in dilemma now should I go for keyboard change, what will be the cost of it after lockdown or buy a external one for now? @LIMBO  @ash-d

No. I dont suggest giving laptop for even a little bit.
Only options:
1. Ask him to come and repair at your place.
2. Go and get it repaired at his place in front of your eyes.
Just DONT let the laptop away from your sight at any moment, however trusted the repair guy is.

Yes. Its all a mess out there in markets like nehru place and ghaffar. Many repair guys do shoddy work (may be, getting trained with our gadgets).

I also had a sh*tty HP laptop whose right side hinge kept breaking. Twice had to get it changed, costing 800,1000 each time from nehru place. Exchanged it with Aspire A515-54G 2 years ago. Working fine as of now without any issues.

If out of warranty first-party repair will be expensive. I mean just for adding an SSD, which only involves taking off the back cover, service charge is Rs 885 for Acer Nitro 5 which is pretty similar to its Aspire counterpart.
You can call Acer CC over phone. Damn easy to get hold off. I need to get some stuff
(battery, int. HDD) checked after lockdown as well. Extended warranty ending in mid-July.

And even after that according to acer forums these laptops gets same issue after some months. Will not but Acer again. Now just looking for some good deal on another laptop to exchange this one.

Unless you want to use the laptop while you are travelling, you should not change the internal keyboard of the laptops.

In my experience, 2 diff brands, about 4 times, replacement internal keyboards don’t last more than a few months, it is a waste of money. Whether its directly from the authorized service center or from 3rd party repair shops its not worth spending that much money on replacing a faulty internal keyboard.

Get a Logitech MK 345 wireless keyboard combo instead.

Spare keyboard will be useful anytime in future so I think you can buy one for now
Also due to lockdown less shops will be open hence the repair cost will be more.

Hp laptop have one the worst hinges and build quality I have ever seen atleast in budget series although hardware quality is decent.
It’s from the day one was clear that these gonna break apart if a bit of extra force is applied.

If out of warranty OEMs like HP, Acer also provide only 90 day warranty on hinges IIRC. And if the model is long out of production they can even source the hinges from non-functional laptops.

Haven’t yet gone through the rest of the replies in this thread yet.

But in the heart of Bombay’s after-narket repairs markets, for a beat down Toshiba Satellite… I finally found a dedicated business that was only into laptop and such repairs.
This was more than a decade back and the personnel there suggested I get BOTH replaced even though only one had cracked (manufacturing defect and handling issues).

And since they themselves would not lathe the metal, they were not 100% committing to the longevity or correct dimensions.
Asked some 750-850 or so for each hinge (material cost only).

I later scanned through the scrapyards, electronic graveyards in Kurla and around to explore the possibilities of salvaging/ cannibalising parts from some other unit.
But I think I gave it away to a relative cum friend to do wahtever they want (external monitor).

If there is not much sentimental value nor extensive need of that device, spending on likely repetitive repairs can be avoided.

Else check if someone has a 3D scanner and printer and some hard polymer or something can be used to mould/build more than one set of hinges at 60-70% percent the costs quoted by the repairshops.

If I understand correctly, it is the swivel mech that joins the screen panel housing to the main body¿ that is what we are talking about, right?

₹2500 for a single hinge or the pair? For a single hinge, unless it is some top end laptop bought within 18-24 months and otherwise in good condition.
…spending as much on a single hinge might be tad steep… in my view.

All these Palika Bazaar, Nehru place type markets used to have internal intercom systems 25-30 years back too.
Can check if you can get a break into some messenger (whatsup, Telegram) groups or via via find some scrap dealers or someone with a junked unit.. from which parts can be repurposed, salvaged?

Now Total I’m paying Rs 2000 including Pair of hinges, Service charge. My laptop is 3 years old and in very good condition except this hinge. In Nehru Place one shop is asking Rs 1500 for pair.

aftermarket hinges (like keyboards) almost never last more than a few months unless they are original parts salvaged from a scrap unit so decide accordingly wink

In the mean time are you providing support to the display? A stack of books on the back should do nicely. Also don’t attempt to close the lid.

So, He has replaced the hinges today but he has charged Rs 200 more as Some locks of panel connecting hinges were also broken, he has fixed them with fevikwik, Idk how much will these locks last. He has given 3 months warranty for hinges only. So finally Paid Rs 2200.
