Adding RAM alone will not help much as the OS/what applications you want to work with, has to be in SSD for improved performance.

If you have 4GB RAM then best is to add 4GB only for Dual channel setup and guess it would be DDR2/3 and i3 3rd gen means should be 10+yrs old tech so not sure if it has SSD slots or does it have SATA 3 HDD? also what OS?

first you need to check what HDD/SSD/RAM type your laptop motherboard supports and if its just HDD, I highly doubt it wouldn't make any/much difference in adding 4GB RAM as its still HDD only (maybe WinXP/7 would run fine but Win10/11 would require min 8GB RAM/256GBSSD for smooth operation)

Samsung/Crucial/Western Digital are some of the good brands, I guess 2.5inch SATA would be the available slot in your laptop but yeah as mentioned earlier, check your laptop model for available upgrades..

Increasing the RAM will only improve the general computing speed like bootup time and background processing speed
