https://www.cnbctv18.com/technology/lost-your-p... Now if your mobile phone is lost, all you have to do is sit back and relax while the government finds it for you. If you wonder how, then here’s a new portal, launching today by union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, to report the theft of phones. Since 2007, the department of telecommunications has been working on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), a database of IMEIs (International Mobile Equipment Identity), the 15-digit unique number that identifies mobile devices. Here's a step-by-step process to get your lost mobile phone: File an FIR of your stolen/lost mobile phone. Inform the DoT via helpline number 14422. DoT will blacklist the IMEI number, as a result, your handset will get blocked from accessing any mobile network in the future – making the device redundant. The cellular operator will use the same IMEI number to block your phone from accessing the network. GSMA, the global representative body of cellular operators, gear makers, software and internet companies, among other entities in the telecom ecosystem, would ensure international cooperation in matters of handset theft. CEIR will access GSMA’s global IMEI database, to identify counterfeit handsets. Today, a pilot project for this will begin in Maharashtra and more details will be shared after its launch.

Blocking imei not equals to getting mobile back. Believe me Even location is turned on along with internet connection, it is still very hard to find it. Sometimes I hide my brother’s mobile, he just can’t find it.

Nowadays, thieves disassemble our mobile and sell the parts like battery, display, etc. So no use of this CEIR. If we lost our phone in India, forget it and move on. Even police won’t help. This CEIR was in testing phase in Pune from 2017. But I haven’t heard about it in last 2 years. Whose lost phones were they tracking in testing phase that too with BSNL. With limited network range of BSNL, how can they test their pilot project.

Tech journalism is a joke in India. Specially from big news networks. Their journalists don’t ever have a slightest idea about what is the actual news and what are they reporting.

Why don’t you team up with some software engineer and develope an app to track laptops. Just like google does. As every laptop has one serial number embedded onto motherboard

I’m wondering how does govt. plan to mint money from this move? So far, all their policies have been focused only on extracting money from common folks.
Did I miss some fine print?

Can you say what “exactly” are the policies that are just there not to help but are just intended to mint money from people?

Instead of blocking the IMEI, they should track the phone. Since, anytime you place a call, the cell towers can locate your approximate location. I guess they can use this, but it will place a lot of overhead on cellular companies….
