Hi Guys,

My external hard drives (2) of them have stopped being shown when connected to the laptop. Any particular reason why this could have happened?

One seems dead after connecting and the other one makes some noise after connecting. I have checked the device manager and it doesn't show up.

TIA.

External hdds are of no use anyway. They stop working anytime. Data recovery costs a fortune then also we re not sure if all data would be recovered. Shift to ssds by putting in extra cash

It's the normal sound that HDD makes when connected. I have not been able to connect to another laptop/ computer.

The other one doesn't make any sound or noise.

You dropped it or any physical shock ? If not then you should try to clean the connection parts in cable, corrosion might be an issue if using after a long time. Also try connecting in another pc if possible, sometimes harddisks make noise when its not getting enough power. One of my hdd do this while connecting to mobile but works fine on pc. Leave for sometime after connecting, as drives gets filled with data they usually take more time to detect.

No...no.  No physical damage or dropped either one of them. I was using it to as a backup of my current laptop.

The noise is gone for good, likely because the platter reader is faulty, or the other one may have failed due to factors like a short on the HDD PCB or a faulty microcontroller. Fixing a hard drive is complex, and the chances of recovery are very low.
