Hi

I am thinking about expanding RAM capacity of my Laptop

I want to order it online from Amazon/Flipkart. My question is

1) how to ensure that any particular RAM would be compatible with my laptop?

2) Any Brand suggestion

3) Can I install it easily at home or getting it installed from the market is preferable?

Thank You

For compatibility, check in task manager -> performance tab -> memory -> speed

how?
Speed is 2667 MHz

1) check for ddr version number and speed that your laptop supports. dont foget to buy SODIMM which is for laptop and not regular DIMM which is for desktop

2) kingston or crucial

3) yes you should do it yourself

If you are able to get the manual/spec sheet for your laptop you'll know how much ram your laptop supports how many ram slots you have and all that.

Just check which ram you'll need. You could use cpuz to check. Most likely ddr4. Get as many sticks as you need or want. I've used hynix, samsung and Kingston without issues in the past.

Google for your laptop disassembly videos to get an idea of how easy your laptop is to open. Ram is mostly easily accessible. You could do it yourself, it if you're not brave enough, head outside. Computer repair shops will do it for a fee.

@EndOfHistory

first include your laptop model number

then include how much RAM you have after knowing this I'll tell you what to do

for eg, if you already have 8gb ram this is good enough if you are not playing games on it

in this case, an SSD upgrade is recommended

if you have DDR 3 ram then there is no point in upgrading the ram now just use it with older windows (once you give the model number I'll be able to tell you this info)

so only if you have 4gb ddr4 ram you will need to buy one more 4gb one (almost all laptops come with 8gb ddr 4 rams so this is highly unlikely )

but if you want to game on it then we first need to see the GPU if it's a good one then only you will need to upgrade your RAM or else it is a waste of your money

I have Acer Predator Helios 300 with 8 GB Ram DDR 4 and 128 GB SSD and HDD.
One RAM slot is empty, I am planning to get 16 GB RAM.

I do not play games but generally have some 70-80 Chrome Tabs open with several Excel, PDF and word files. Sometimes laptop freezes and takes around 3-4 minutes to come to senses or restrats automatically. I want to get rid of this issue.

And thanks for taking your time to help bro

I just tried opening the RAM slot and its easy. Will do it myself. Just need to finalize the product and order it.

Thank You

Just check your model number in crucial website. Check the specification mentioned. You can check the same in your manufacturer website. 2666 MHz means a gaming laptop I believe.

Doesn't make a huge difference, but it is best of your ram sticks are similar. Company, size and speed. So if you have the budget and it is possible, settle for 8 more from the same brand, or get two new sticks.

this is not the right way to do it

if you have 8 get 1 more 8gb

This is the right way bhai. His model supports total of 32GB RAM. https://www.makeuseof.com/what-is-ram-flex-mode.... Intel has flex mode. So, no issues. 🙂

regardless whenever you put 2 sticks they have to be of same size

if not followed there will be an issue

if he is ok with buying 2 16gb sticks then its good but 32gb is overkill just for chrome tabs

16gb is the sweet spot as if its ddr4 in 2 - 3 years it will be obsolete

spend less if possible get a good ssd atleast 1tb in the sale

No issue is going to happen bhai.  🙂🙂🙂 Intel flex ll take care of it. A lot of laptop manufacturers sell such combination.

yes. If I get two 16 Gb then the current RAM of 8GB would be of no use.
So, I guess 8+16 GB would do the work

Don't worry. You have it. 🙂

Just to confirm it, you can check with cpu-z.

you dont really need to use flex mode but if you do play games you will lose FPS around 5% - 15%

what flex does is for eg you have 8gb ram and you put in 16gb enabling flex will make it so that both are 8gb duel channel and the speed will be of the lowest one the remaining 8gb will show as 3rd stot which will cause performance issues in games / intense workload like video editing  etc

it could give you blue screen due to memory mapping issues as it is software and the last update was very old god knows what would happen with each windows update and will intel fix it thats a big question as almost no one uses this feature now a days there is still a option to turn it off by going into safe mode in windows but make sure you are ready to diagnose it and you have a backup laptop / phone logged into your trading account if you do trade or some critical work of that sort

you can decide what you want

I have used it buddy. No issues for me. Do you have any supporting documents to back your claim??? @LIMBO

Intel Flex has been around close to 2 decades. My first laptop from 2008 was configured by the OEM as 2+1GB. No BSODs that could be attributed to memory. In fact extremely few over the 7+ years I used it. And it was used extremely intensively.

My current laptop came with 4+4GB and I swapped the lone module out in favor of a 16GB one resulting in a 4+16GB config for close to 5 years now. Again no BSODs due to RAM. 8GB operates in 128-bit mode and the rest in 64-bit mode. In some workloads there's a little perf. loss compared to full 128-bit mode but that's no big deal.

It's not strictly necessary to have matching ram sticks (maybe u less you plan to overclock, which I'm assuming op won't). Its just not ideal. Mismatched ram will work fine, with some, possibly minor, wasted potential like, the slower ram speed is used on both, and so on. You'll be fine with mismatched sticks. Matched sticks is just the optimal way of having ram.

Also, flex mode will not make a 8+16 work like 8+8. It'll be 8+8 in dual channel mode plus 8 in single channel.

Keep the Task Manager open and check SSD usage the next time the system hangs. At least 20-25% free space is necessary for an SSD to deliver optimal perf. and Windows can chew up a big chunk of the available storage easily especially when the SSD is just 128GB.

16GB RAM should be sufficient for dozens of tabs.
