Unless it is some obscure product or some peripheral brand, the free service and repair warranty on the refrigerator's compressor would still be in-effect.. for a four year old unit.
It sounds REALLY unreasonable for the CSD of a brand to suggest that instead of honouring their warranty, they would rather have the customer pay for one more (mostly unnecessary at this stage,l service.
Hence I first enquired about the make, model.. rather than directly addressing your main query.
Personally, I would have given a piece of my mind to the associate/person pitching the AMC service... especially if it was unsolicited marketing.
(As of now, I do not know if you yourselves breached the topic of AMC or the other person/s did.)
Generally Refrigerators don't have problems that often that you'd need amc. Customer service will obviously ask you to get amc but you decide for yourself if your refrigerator have had problems very often in the last four years that it required to get a service engineer to repair? A pro-tip given to me by a service engineer was that if your refrigerator is not cooling or partially cooling (double door deep freezer cools but lower panel doesn't or vice versa) the most common problem is ice accumulation within the pipes in the interior. So, switching off the refrigerator for 24 hours and allowing it to defrost completely and then switching it on generally solves the problem. I don't know what's the problem with your refrigerator but give it a try & check
AMC means you don't have to pay visit charges/service charges etc to company. Components if changed will be on paid basis only. There are other type of AMC which include components also but it is expensive generally.
AMC is not recommended for refrigerator/TV because you don't need regular visits/SERVICES by company.
AMC is good for AC/Water Purifier etc. (if available at less than 10% of product price per year).
