Just read lonely planet will answer all your queries.
There are Mumbai darshan buses but if you stay in suburbs (north Mumbai) will have to start very very early like 5:30-6:00 am to catch them from south mumbai.
You will cover a lot of places in a single day.
do keep a Friday 5am morning slot open to visit chor Bazar. No stolen goods there but good place to find interesting odd items.
