I need to buy 5 star ac for a room of 10*12. Good cooling needed as room and roof face sunlight being on top floor of building. Good service needed as well.

I was recommended LG and panasonic, but have heard LG have reduced cooling capacity of 2023 models from 5100 to 4600. Will this make any difference? Also not heard much about service of panasonic.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Can you tell anything about after sales service of these brands? And any models you will recommend? Thank you. Buying this for my senior citizen parents, hoping for long term smooth functioning.

Previously it drove me nuts, now it just breaks me..

..as to why the fixation with wastage.

Be it kitchen small appliances, garage hand tools or large appliances.. even in scenarios where they mean NOTHING CONCRETE.‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

The cooling (and heating) capacity of any HVAC unit worth its name would be and should be measures only in the practical and/or rated BTU (or equivalent joules).‎ ‏‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

‏British Thermal Units https://eia.gov/energyexplained/units-and-calculators/british-thermal-units.php is a fairly standardised way of recording capacity in the HVAC industry. (Given a specific MSL/ASL: standard 1013 hectopascal pressure.)

There are other references too, but I am mentioning the one which is more or less standardised/ accepted to compare across brands.

12000 BTU is what is usually considered 'one ton' cooling/heating capacity. https://www.betterhomesbc.ca/products/heat-pumps-btu-to-tons

(Not to get confused by the North American terminology. Basically everything from a refrigerator to conventional air conditioners are heat pumps). ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

As for brands, speaking from point of view of having older LG split type (non inverter) units

and first generation Daikin inverter type and normal split air-conditioning units..

.. i would rather advice against Daikin, in most of India.‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

Product wise:

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏Maybe now their inverter type units are better  in that they do not completely fail when the heat wave goes paat 38°-39°C.

But the ones we had, were rendered ineffective.

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

Energy efficiency wise:

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎  ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏We did not really use them that much for continual ten hour plus stretches.

But even when we did and in outside test environments have had comparisons done of energy consumption

the upfront costs to energy savings payoff was only marginally justified.

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

Daikin (in India) service support wise:

‏‏‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ In two different states, locations it was the dame sorry state of affairs.

In that, the brand leaves one in the hands of the stockists or dealers.

The on ground service support is devolved by Daikin to these johnnies.

And in peak season, many even hire kids as young as teenagers to go repair or routine service the units.‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏ ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

In South East Asian countries, experience was limited to capital cities or other nearby places only.

Daikin units were good.

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

Since energy star ratings are just as dumb/ useful as the  speed ratings claimed by wireless carriers (mobile companies), I really cannot opine on that aspect.

(Know for sure though, that the star ratings obtained under laboratory/ test conditions have little to no bearing in average use case scenarios).‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

Those who can afford it, can always consider Misubishi units as having good service life.

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

But in desi markets the likes of LG, Bluestar have invested a lot in understanding the local issues and customising their products.

O General initially (in 1990s) had issues as they were putting the same compressors, designs here.. as they did in the middle eastern world.

But we have amongst the most poor quality power dupplies (voltage fluctuations, splikes, outages).

Thus O General initially did not have long life in tier 1, tier 2

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

But now, most of the assembled air-conditioner market has people using O General or Toshiba internals.

(Koryo, the Pantaloon/Future group brand, at one time had also sourced Toshiba compressors in their products).‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

Now the brands (like Toshiba, Carrier,  others) have all sold those consumer appliances brand usage rights to Midea, Haier type Chinese conglomerates).

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏

Some of the Panasonic models are worth the price, so to speak.

But then, it is nowhere close to the exacting standards of the Nationsl brand (its parent company). ‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎ ‏‏

‎ ‏‏‎‏‏‎

If not going for assembled unit,

then can also consider Bluestar, LG.

O General are kings in window AC. Not used or seen their split ones in a while.‏‏‏‏‏‏‏‏

Go for Panasonic 1.5 Ton 5 Star 2023 model. 2022 model has 2 way swing only.

Dont go for lg, due to reduced cooling capacity. Daikin is also good, but many reviews say that latest model not cooling below 24°.

I live in Delhi so extreme heat is given. From my experience I always go for brand giving higher cooling capacity within my budget. Also 4 way swing is must option. I have had good experience with 1.5 ton carrier window ac, 1.5 ton Daikin split inverter ac bought last yr. Today bought Panasonic 2 ton split inverter ac as Panasonic brand has been always been good to me in terms of longevity.

Every brand's AC performs well in first 2-3 years after that problem starts.

I have two non-Inverter Voltas ACs , one started giving problem after 5 years and got dead last year after 14 yrs of service but another one is still running fine even after 10 years.

AC is used just 3 months of summer after that when next summer comes warranty gets over so for a peace of mind on such huge investment, 5 years comprehensive warranty is necessary.

Samsung had been giving 5 years comprehensive warranty on PCB, fan motor, evaporator coil and gas recharge till last year but withdrew it in 2023 models.

Personally, I like Samsung WindFree AC with so many useful features but just 1 yr warranty in 2023 model is discouraging me to buy it .

Any information on Hitachi Acs? A few enquiries in shops around me are all recommending Hitachi and then Bluestar. They say hitachi has some of the best cooling (5285 for 2022 model) and robust Acs with 1+1 warranty and expandable to year 3 on installation. I have no idea about their after sales service though. Any input will be appreciated.
