Parle Agro - Smoodh Packaging Not Environmentally Friendly

Hello everyone, this is not a usual post, but rather an important one. I don’t know if you have ever come across the product Smoodh by Parle Agro. This is solely regarding the product packaging problem and not the quality of the actual product.

I had sent a email to them, which will help you understand the problem better. I have been unsuccessful in seeking attention from them even after repetitive reminders.

The email exactly says,
Dear Sir/Madam,

I recently tried your new product line ’Smoodh’. I was utterly disappointed with the packaging and portion size of the Rs. 10, 85ml pack. I suppose this is the only portion size available currently. The product was good, infact I had to take another pack just because the portion size was way too less, leading to more waste.

Moreover I was even more disappointed to see that you were giving away plastic straws with every pack, considering how deadly they are to aquatic animals. With less portion sizes, this will lead to consuming more packs than usual for a individual, which comes accompanied with a not required plastic straw, which will lead to more wastage than even intended.

I request you to either increase portion size(by also increasing price accordingly) or even better, provide a recyclable paper straw with every pack.

Being a big MNC like you, you set certain examples to other people/companies which later influence their decision, so please try to set a good example for others to follow.

I hope together we can do what we can for our mother Earth, and support environmentally sustainable packaging. Hoping you would understand what I am trying to convey here and do what needs to be done as soon as possible.

Thanking you for helping our mother Earth.

As they are pushing the product to the fullest via marketing from past few months, it has started to fear me for our near future.

This problem is really serious and I need your help getting the message out to them. Thank you.

Good effort, amazon also take feedback regarding excessive packaging(there is an option for that in their delivery feedback).

Generally such products have 2 variants: a small one (tetrapack) costing 10rs and a bigger one (mostly glass bottle) costing 20/25. Also note that glass bottles are more environmental friends from what I am of aware as they are recyclable and don’t need a plastic straw.

If anyone needs a tweet template, here’s one tagging Parle Agro, Smoodh, Varun Dhawan and Ministry of Environment.

Every pack of Smoodh(₹10, 85ml) by Parle Agro comes with a plastic straw. The portion size is too less, leading to another pack consumption which comes with another unwanted plastic straw. Stop this practice.

Bhaiya this is a general but very concerning issue across products by all bramds in respective categories  dumped in market .
Your effort towards it is appreciable , but if someone knows the know how should tag this things upto the concern authorities and ministry .
Unnecessary packaging
Small packaging ,
Odd weight size packaging etc should be definitely worked out.

There seems to be a ‘Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’ option under Central Government complaints on PGPortal. I don’t know about it’s efficiency though.

Is the taste better than Amul kool?

That is subjective. This thread is not regarding that, but the impact on the environment. Small portion sizes, excessive plastic straws, which will lead to twice the waste, it is all about that.

Every tetra pack provide straws, we can’t drink without these straws so I don think companies have any other choice

This is not regarding the straws, it is regarding the plastic straws. Straws are required but it can be of recyclable paper, like other brands such as Nescafe does. It is regarding the small portion sizes, which leads to twice the waste.

We need to push this, everyone needs to tweet and retweet this and tag all the environmental related agencies

They should have increased product size.. 85ml is too small. I even tried Smoodh.. Loved the taste. Also they should have provided eco friendly straws. Or some alternative packaging where we can tear at the top of packaging where they should provide a dotted cutting feature so that we can drink directly without using any straw
Then they can eliminate straw completely

There’s a directive already in this regard from the government, all companies will need to stop giving plastic straws from July this year… no action needed by anyone, it’s going to happen.

That deadline can easily be delayed by the influence from the industry.

And it’s not just about straws, what about the small portion sizes that leads to twice the consumption, and more waste generation. Tetra packs are not fully recyclable. Even paper straws will be given in plastic wrappers, so twice the wrappers.
